The Hawth, Crawley: Cocktails and Laughter

Acclaimed singer-pianist Michael Law, founder and musical director of the world famous Piccadilly Dance Orchestra, gives a rare solo performance of his show Cocktails and Laughter at The Hawth Studio in February.

Entertaining, witty and sentimental, Michael’s cabaret-style show features great songs by Noel Coward, Cole Porter, The Gershwin brothers and others, linked with anecdotes and stories.

Michael took part in Radio 2’s Noel Coward centenary celebration, their 2007 three-part series about Coward (hosted by Neil Tennant) and recorded a hitherto unrecorded Coward song for a Radio 4 programme about Marie Stopes.

Michael toured the world for six years in cabaret, with broadcaster and author Sheridan Morley (Noel Coward’s friend and first biographer).

Simon Brett, the BBC producer, is a prolific writer of whodunits. He is the writer responsible for the Charles Paris, Mrs Pargeter and Feathering series of crime novels, as well as radio and television series such as No Commitments and After Henry.

While with the BBC, Brett produced the first episode of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, as well as many episodes of cult comedy series The Burkiss Way, comedy series I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, and comedy panel game Just a Minute.

Brilliantly Simple: spectroscopes, toys and the Incredible Machine

It takes a lot of hard work to make things easy, but it is very easy to make things a lot of hard work, (as anyone who has tried to use Microsoft Word for anything other than typing a letter will aver). On Simply Brilliant night (Feb 22nd) we look at things that are brilliant because of their simplicity.

In 1993 Trevor Baylis was watching a programme about the AIDS crisis in Africa, which observed that in many regions radio was the only available means of communication, but lack of batteries or electricity made them useless. There was a need for an educational tool that did not rely on electricity. That set Trevor off. His brilliantly simple idea was to combine the modern technology of the electric generator with the ancient technology of the wind-up watch to make something completely new, the wind up radio. When he put his idea in front of manufacturers the reaction was predictably negative. He needed luck, so he worked hard to find it, getting on BBC's Tomorrow's World, where his idea was at last spotted by the right entrepreneur.

Trevor will be joined by Jonathan Hare, who had to make something from nothing over and over on BBC's Rough Science, and by the University of Brighton, who are working to create the brilliant innovations of tomorrow.

You can also practice your own ingenuity. The spectroscope is a brilliant invention, which allows us to see what a star is made of even though it is trillions of miles away. You can make one from a CD and a cardboard tube with Darren Baskill from the University of Sussex to help you.

Children's toys have to be incredibly simple, so there is a lot of brilliance packed into their design. But pity the poor creative genius behind them who can only look on gloomily while babba sucks on it for a few months, then chucks it away. Toys Arrrgh Us will conduct autopsies on some dead toys to expose their internal brilliance.

The Incredible Machine is there for you to play around with your own ideas. And, naturally, lots lots more. Even as I write this other bright ideas are being emailed through. Keep refreshing that page.

Local charities in the running for cash boost

Mid Sussex charities have welcomed the launch of the first Sussex Living Marathon Weekend after it was announced that four local organisations will become official beneficiaries of the event.

The Burgess Hill District Lions, the Yews Community Centre in Haywards Heath, East Grinstead and District Access Group and The Rotary Club of East Grinstead have all been notified that they will be the officially supported charities of the Sussex Living Marathon Weekend.

If a place is booked in advance, runners can enter all three of the races that make up the Sussex Living Marathon Weekend for just £35. The entry fee goes towards the cost of staging each race but also supports the four worthwhile charities that have been nominated as official beneficiaries.

The organisers of the Sussex Living Marathon Weekend would like as many charities as possible to have the opportunity of raising funds. Therefore, all participants are being encouraged to consider raising extra money by collecting sponsorship on behalf of a local good cause. Local businesses are also being asked to get involved, either by entering teams, sponsoring and supporting the races or offering discounts to the runners taking part.

The news that the Sussex Living Marathon Weekend will support the work of four local charities has been warmly welcomed by the charities themselves.

“We are absolutely delighted to be nominated as one of the charities to benefit from this event,” said John Ellis, President of the Rotary Club of East Grinstead Meridian. “The proceeds will enable us to extend our already significant support for local Rotary charities. We believe this event will be an excellent example of what can be achieved when a number of committed people combine to bring something new and exciting to East Grinstead and the wider district of Mid Sussex.”

The Sussex Living Marathon is sponsored by Sussex Living Magazine and is supported by Mid Sussex District Council and Burgess Hill, East Grinstead and Haywards Heath Town Councils. The event, which comprises three races and takes place over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend, begins with a 10-mile race in East Grinstead on Saturday 5th May, moving to Haywards Heath for a 10-mile race on Sunday 6th May and finishes with a 10k race in Burgess Hill on Monday 7th May. Combined, the three races will cover a total of 26.2 miles – the classic marathon distance. Runners are able to enter each race individually, but those completing all three will receive a special commemorative Sussex Living Marathon Weekend medal.

Local radio station Bright FM has just announced that it too will be supporting the Marathon Weekend and will be broadcasting live from Burgess Hill for the finale of the event.

"Bright FM is delighted to support the Sussex Living Marathon Weekend,” said Allan Moulds, Managing Director, Bright FM. “This really is a unique event which will showcase the beautiful countryside and great towns that make up Mid Sussex.

“As the local radio station for the area we just had to support this new event, which I'm sure will go from strength to strength. Listeners will be able to tune into Bright for the very latest on the races. It promises to be a great weekend for the whole area.”

Be part of the West Sussex wood fuel industry

Three meetings are taking place across West Sussex next month promoting the local wood fuel industry.

Aimed at woodland owners, contractors and land agents, the meetings will explore how existing woodland can be managed, and look at planting crops for the energy market.

The meetings are taking place on:

· Tuesday February 7, at 7pm, in The Angel Hotel, North Street, Midhurst, GU29 9DN.
· Thursday February 9, at 7pm, in The Red Lion, London Road, Ashington, RH20 3DD.
· Wednesday February 15, at 7pm, in The Gardeners Arms, Selsfield Road, Ardingly, RH17 6TJ.

West Sussex County Council Deputy Leader Lionel Barnard, who has responsibility for the environment, said: “New Government incentives will mean wood fuel use will grow rapidly, and we want to ensure West Sussex landowners, contractors and land agents are fully prepared for this.

“Using wood from local woodlands for fuel is more environmentally friendly as it hasn’t been transported long distances, helps contribute to the local economy and supports wildlife through environmentally friendly wood management.”

The meetings will give a chance to meet others already involved in the wood fuel and biomass industries, and to find out more about the Renewable Heat Incentive.

Lionel added: “Those who come along to the meetings will also be able to hear how West Sussex County Council and the Forestry Commission are supporting the industry and we want to hear from them what else they feels needs to be done to support expansion in the sector.”

Ditchling Film Society: Uncle Boonmee

Our February film will be screened on Thursday, 2 February 2012, and is entitled Uncle Boonmee (full title: Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives).

Uncle Boonmee is a middle aged farmer living up in the rural hills in Thailand. Sadly he is dying of a kidney disease and the film centres on the last days of his life. Together with his loved ones, including the ghost of his dead wife and his lost son who has returned in a non-human form, Boonmee explores his past lifes as he contemplates the reasons for his illness.

Hookers Bridge Twineham closed for maintenance work

Hookers Bridge in Twineham will be closed for around seven weeks to allow essential maintenance work to be carried out.

The £100,000 West Sussex County Council scheme, which started on Monday January 30, will strengthen the existing bridge. Masonry repairs and routine maintenance will also be carried out at the same time.

The bridge needs to be closed while the work takes place as the structure will be temporarily weakened while the work is carried out.

A signed diversion will be in place for traffic however pedestrian access will be maintained. The rest of Bolney Chapel Road will remain open.

Holy Trinity Sunday School raise over £500 for Bhopal Medical Appeal

Children at Holy Trinity Sunday School, Hurstpierpoint have raised just over £500 for the Bhopal Medical Appeal and presented a cheque to Georgina le Clercq of the Charity on Sunday 29th January.

The children voted to support The Bhopal Medical Appeal during 2011, to help those affected by the chemical disaster which happened in India over 27 years ago - an estimated 120,000 – 150,000 survivors are still chronically ill.

The Bhopal Medical Appeal helps survivors at it Sambharvana and Chingari clinics and also campaigns for better safety at factories around the world, to prevent dangerous leaks and explosions.

Commenting on the money raised, John Joyce, Rector of Holy Trinity said “The terrible disaster in Bhopal seemed to strike a chord with the children at Holy Trinity, particularly when they learnt that in Bhopal children continue to be born with deformities and other medical problems. It is for these children and the survivors that over £500 was raised.”

CRAWLEY’S GOT TALENT: THE GRAND FINALE

The countdown continues to the final of Crawley’s Got Talent on Saturday 11 February with the announcement that Heart Sussex DJ Garry Wilson will host the event at the Hawth. Garry will be joined by three judges; Kevin Eason, Head of Arts Service for Crawley Borough Council, Steve Evans, Manager of Crawley Town Football Club and Vision in Youth Collective member Erin Witton.

Further details of the prizes on offer have also been announced. The top prize is £500 cash and now local recording studio Pittaz Productions Ltd have donated a recording session in their Tilgate based facility. Spaceship Media Video Production Company, a creative team who specialise in music promos and moving image have donated time and staff to create a promotional video. Organisers Liz Hart and Vikki Jacobs from Crawley Borough Council have been delighted at the response to the project. ‘We’ve been working with lots of people whose time and commitment to the project has been invaluable but to have two such fantastic prizes donated by local businesses is just brilliant’.

Crawley’s Got Talent, an intergenerational project that saw over 180 acts, featuring nearly 400 people, audition across town last year.

Hurst Chapel Challenge for CLIC Sargent

Take part in the first abseil open to the public at Hurstpierpoint College on 11th March 2012 and raise vital funds for CLIC Sargent.

You will be abseiling down the beautiful historic chapel in the grounds of the local independent school, standing at approximately 85ft with spectacular countryside views.

To register we require a £10 registration fee and we are asking all participants to raise a minimum sponsorship of £100.

You do not have to have any experience in abseiling as our instructors will give you a full briefing and small training session to get you fully prepared for the descent.

Once registered you will receive our abseil pack, which includes everything you will need to know about the day as well as lots of help to raise over and above your target sponsorship. We will be offering incentives throughout your fundraising and the highest fundraiser will win a fantastic prize.

I’m often asked what makes us special and the simple answer is we’re more than just a book shop! The Mint House has been in the middle of the High Street, Hurstpierpoint for over 50 years and since taking over last year we’ve aimed to make the shop a hub of the community. We host a book club, knitting group, showcase artists’ work in our Gallery and have regular events such as author signings, book swaps and workshops for children and adults.

Of course we are passionate about books and everyone is welcome to browse amongst the shelves; we also stock gifts, cards and educational toys by Djeco and House of Marbles. The shop has seating and an area for children to play in making the buying experience a pleasurable one. We offer a wide selection of contemporary and classical ﬁction for adults and children from 0 – 100 plus years and have a range of titles for reluctant and dyslexic readers. And if we haven’t got it we’ll move heaven and earth to ﬁnd it for you! Orders generally arrive within 24-48 hours.

Another week’s just beginning, after what turned out to be a very hectic previous one.

Last week I went up to Knightsbridge for an informal interview with Matt Roberts Personal Training team. I met a very professional lady called Vicky at the training studio and have been lucky enough to be offered the opportunity to work with the team as an associate personal trainer after being selected from over 100 applicants apparently. Looks like this could be an exciting new step, watch this space.
Whilst in Knightsbridge I thought I’d pop into Harrods and whilst chatting to the sales guy, he offered to put my business card up in the staff room. Now wouldn’t that be something, getting a client from Harrods!

Saturday I was wearing my other hat following stories for my Sussex Living articles. A local small holding phoned me to say their sheep had started lambing. You can’t beat seeing a lamb being born; it melts your heart when they let out that first bleat. Read all about it in the March issue of Sussex Living.

Get in the Valentine’s mood with a day of South Downs love songs

Surprise your loved one this Valentine’s Day with a serenade of local and historic love songs from the South Downs. The South Downs Society is running a free workshop on 11 February in Brighton to breathe life into these wonderful but almost-forgotten gems from our history.

Those coming to this free event will learn songs of lost loves, unrequited love, false love and mysterious love. Some of the songs are slow and haunting, others are fast-paced and best sung by a roaring chorus of people.

“Brighton Camp is one of the beautiful love songs we’ll be learning at the workshop”, explains Chris Hare, the South Downs Songs Project Manager. “Dating back to the Elizabethan period, the song tells the tale of a soldier who has left his love to go to Brighton Camp, while he waited to be sent overseas to fight. In the song, the soldier - far from home - wistfully remembers the love he has left behind.”

Chris continues: “Rosebuds in June was another well-known song, which would have lifted the rafters of many Sussex pubs in years gone by. This song celebrates the joy and energy of the young frisking lambs, as well as the love of the local lads and lasses as they enjoy the beautiful Sussex meadows, hand in hand.”

Both songs were collected early last century by Arthur Beckett, one of the founders of the South Downs Society and a famous local journalist and author. He published them in his book Spirit of the Downs, but some songs he heard he thought too bawdy to be saved for posterity, like many other collectors. He wrote: “Some of the songs are of a decidedly licentious and unwholesome character, and for that reason, are better unrecorded.”

“A few of these bawdy ballads slipped through the net and have survived to the present day, but only a handful of people know of the existence of these erotic love songs of the past”, says Chris.

Chris Hare, will be leading the workshop with Ann Feloy and Emily Longhurst, collectively known as Emily and the Hares. As well as listening to the songs, participants will learn the songs and hear about the social history and folklore of the South Downs.

The event will be on Saturday 11 February from 10.30am to 4.30pm in the Function Room of the King & Queen pub, 13-17 Marlborough Place, Brighton BN1 1UB. The event is free. It is one of many folk songs workshops and courses being held by the South Downs Society. All are free, thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Brighton’s largest and longest established seed swap event is back for its 11th year and is expected to be even bigger than ever.

Seedy Sunday 2012 will be held on Sunday 5th February at Hove Town Hall. The event opens at 10am and runs until 4.30pm and is expected to see more than 2000 people swapping or donating for seed. Entry is just £2 (children free) with all proceeds ploughed back into the event.

A full programme of speakers will be announced shortly but is expected to include seed, food and organic campaigners, writers and activists, plus an ever-popular question time session to help those new to sowing and growing or wanting advice on everything from varieties to grow to improving the soil. The day will also include demonstrations, children's activities and an organic cafe.

Hove Town Hall will also play host to a wide range of stalls from specialist nurseries and seed sellers to community groups and charities, with an emphasis on local organisations or those with a focus on sustainability, biodiversity, healthy living and community activity.

Chairman of the organising committee, Alan Phillips, says Seedy Sunday is now an important part of the gardening year for many of those attending:

“We know that many gardeners and allotment holders view Seedy Sunday as their main annual opportunity to acquire new seed. Many will save seed from their own crops to bring along and swap, but of course if you’ve no seed to swap you can still enjoy the enormous range of seeds on offer, including some from the Millennium Seed Bank swap, by making a 50p donation per pack.

“Seedy Sunday also raises awareness of the issues of biodiversity and food sovereignty as well as the benefits of growing and eating your own food. It’s also an amazing community event with everyone from diehard organic types to complete newcomers looking to sow their first ever seeds coming along.”

FIRE SERVICE RENEW APPEAL FOR SCRAP CARS

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is once again appealing for people to donate scrap cars and help firefighters hone their road traffic collision rescue skills.

A number of Fire Stations across the county are in need of extra cars for crews to train on and practice the latest preparation, stabilisation and cutting techniques they need when they are rescuing casualties from life-threatening car crashes.

Richard Davy, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service's Deputy District Commander for Crawley & Mid Sussex, explains why the supply of scrap cars is so important:

"Attending road traffic collisions and being able to quickly and safely rescue people trapped in their cars is a core part of a firefighter's role and undoubtedly saves many lives each year. Getting practical 'hands on' training is obviously a vital part of maintaining and developing those rescue skills.

"It could be a matter of life or death when we arrive at an incident, with often only a narrow window of opportunity to either make space for medical stabilisation or rapid casualty removal to facilitate some of the more complicated medical procedures, so having cars to practice on is crucial.

"That's why we are urging anyone thinking of scrapping their car to consider donating it to us. We can arrange for the car to be picked up free of charge, have all the necessary paperwork processed and the car dropped at the station to us."

With Chinese New Year festivities about to begin, firefighters in West Sussex are recommending a few simple precautions to ensure everyone enjoys safe and happy celebrations.

The Year of the Dragon, which starts on the 23rd of January, will signal the start of two weeks of celebrations within the Chinese community. However, the risk of fire increases during major festivities with people spending more time at home cooking and entertaining, as well as celebrating the event with fireworks, firecrackers, candles or Chinese lanterns.

There are many traditions and customs associated with Chinese New Year, which begins on the first new moon of the lunar new year and ends two weeks later with the full moon, including the famous Lantern Festival and Dragon Dance.

Jackie Boyle, Community Risk Reduction Officer for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, said:

"It really is a special date in the Chinese calendar and represents good luck and renewed hope for happiness and prosperity. We just want to help make sure that people welcome in the Year of the Dragon enjoyably and safely.

"Be especially careful if you are planning to launch Chinese sky lanterns. It's not possible for anyone using these lanterns to control where they will land or be certain that the fuel cell has extinguished fully so they can be a serious fire hazard.

"Please also take extra care when you are cooking, most fires start in kitchen and many simply because people leave their pans unattended. If a pan or a wok does catch fire, don't try and tackle it yourself, switch off the heat if it's safe to do so, close the door, get out, and call us out."

West Sussex Fire & Rescue offers the following additional advice for celebrating safely:

Treat fireworks with care, only buy ones marked with British Safety Standard 7114 and always read and follow the manufacturers instructions.
When using candles or tea lights ensure that they are not left unattended, extinguish them before leaving the room, or going to bed.
Take extra care when cooking with hot oil. If the oil starts to smoke, turn off the heat and leave the pan to cool. Never fill the pan more than one-third full of oil. Never throw water over the pan.
Fit working smoke alarms on each level of your home and don't forget to pull your finger out for a weekly test!

Cycletta at Plumpton Racecourse – inspiring more women to cycle in 2012

In 2011 Participate Sport Ltd launched the women only Cycletta cycling series, inspiring nearly 2,000 women of all abilities to get on their bikes and ride 40km alongside Olympic and World Track Champion Victoria Pendleton.

As we begin the Olympic year, Participate are set to build on this success by expanding the series even further. 2012 will see seven Cycletta events being held across England, one of which will be based on Plumpton Racecourse and the surrounding area, inspiring more women than ever before to take part and by doing so supporting Cycletta’s Charity Partner, Macmillan Cancer Support.

Keeping Mid Sussex homes warmer this winter

Mid Sussex District Council is helping local residents to stay warm at home this winter by offering free visits from qualified energy assessors.

With the cold winter weather continuing to bite and the price of energy on the rise, many residents in Mid Sussex will be concerned about the cost of heating their homes. Mid Sussex District Council is looking to help those people who are having difficulty paying their energy bills by offering free home visits from energy saving experts.

Mid Sussex District Council has worked alongside Adur District Council, Arun District Council, Chichester District Council, Crawley Borough Council, Horsham District Council and Worthing Borough Council, to secure £617,800 from the Department of Health for the Warmer West Sussex project.

As part of the Warmer West Sussex project, Home Energy Assessors will be available to visit residents and provide advice on how to get the best deal from energy suppliers, use heating controls effectively or generally keep warm and save energy in the home. The energy saving experts will also be able to direct residents towards support schemes, such as the Warm Front project, that provides grants for heating and insulation.

Every resident who signs up for a home visit will receive up to £50 worth of energy saving equipment free of charge, including draft proofing measures, hot water tank jackets and energy monitors.

The Warmer West Sussex project funding also helps to support the work of local voluntary organisations. The West Sussex Citizen’s Advice Bureau will be able to carry out home visit benefit checks to make sure residents are receiving all the benefits to which they are entitled, the British Red Cross and Parish Councils will be able to purchase additional winter kits to help the local community tackle severe snowy weather and the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service will have increased capacity to deliver fire safety checks in the home.

“Nobody should be suffering from the cold in their own home,” said Councillor Christopher Snowling, Cabinet Member for Health and Community. “People may be tempted to try and save money this winter by leaving the heating off but I want our residents to know that this is not the only way to reduce heating bills.”

“By contacting Climate Energy and arranging a free visit from a home energy assessor, you could discover just how many ways there are to save energy and reduce your heating bills,” said Councillor Pru Moore, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Sustainability. “The assessors provide practical assistance as well as useful advice. A simple phonecall is all that is needed for an expert to come out, visit you in your own home, and tailor help to your specific needs.”

Residents who are having difficulty paying their gas and electricity bills can apply to receive a free visit from a Climate Energy home energy assessor, by calling 0800 0546815. The Burgess Hill District Lions Club are donating lifesaving equipment to St Pauls Catholic College and Downlands Community School. Lifesaving training on the use of the defibrillator commences at St Pauls Catholic College on Thursday 26th January @ 10am

After watching a BBC News article about a young boy who suffered a cardiac arrest and died at a school in Medway, Lion President John Thomson of Burgess Hill District Lions Club felt compelled to take action. Speaking with his committee they agreed unanimously that they should work to put lifesaving defibrillators into schools in the area and decided part of their Christmas collection funds should go towards this cause. St Paul’s Catholic College, a large innovative College situated in Jane Murray Way and Downlands Community School in Hassocks are the first to benefit. Lifesaving training in the use of the defibrillator will be carried out at the College by the South East Coast Ambulance Service.

The BBC news article was part of the national cardiac charity SADS UK’s ‘Big Shock Campaign’, advising people that few schools have a defibrillator on site to use in case of sudden cardiac arrest, and that lives will be saved by having this lifesaving equipment on the premises and personnel trained in its use. A partnership was forged when Lions Tony Parris & Janet Walton met the founder of SADS UK and discovered that the two organisations had a goal in common; caring for youth, our leaders of tomorrow.

If a person goes into cardiac arrest it is crucial that that a therapeutic shock delivered by the defibrillator is administered as soon as possible. This can restore the heart rhythm, giving a person the best chance of survival. The Automated External Defibrillator is easy to use by the layperson, providing voice prompts to the rescuer and will only deliver a shock if it’s needed.

Lion President John Thomson, Burgess Hill District Lions Club says: ‘My wife has experienced the death of a promising pupil from SAD and we know the impact on the family and school. If this initiative can save one life it will be worth while. We hope to expand this to more schools in the area.’

Anne Jolly, Founder of SADS UK says: ‘We are delighted that the Burgess Hill District Lions Club is concerned about the welfare of young people and putting lifesaving defibrillators into schools. Having a defibrillator on the premises and personnel trained to carry out lifesaving increases the chance of survival 3 fold. Ambulance services endorse defibrillators being on the premises as they know when they arrive at a scene of a cardiac arrest that there is a much better chance of the patient surviving. ’

SADS UK is urging Government to make defibrillators available in all schools. In the meantime SADS UK is working with schools and organisations in the community to put this lifesaving equipment in place. The show brings to life favourite melodies and songs from the Golden Age of popular music written by Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, Cole Porter and George Gershwin.

Singing the songs, in their widely acclaimed and delightful style, will be guest vocalists Ruth Fahie and Gary Wright.

Helping to raise money to support the East Grinstead Museum, the concert is a showcase for Roger Hind’s fresh, toe-tapping arrangements of more than twenty popular show-stopping classics. As your host Roger also will provide an entertaining insight into the composer’s lives, their music and lyrics.

The Quartet, who over many years have built-up a loyal and enthusiastic following for their Sunday lunchtime sessions at the Ravenswood, Sharpthorne, feature Roger on piano, Graham Mintram – bass, Dave Trigwell – drums and David Brown – saxaphones and clarinet.

Organised by the Friends of The Museum, all profits will go towards supporting East Grinstead’s independent award winning Museum that depends on voluntary donations and shop sales to preserve for everyone the town’s heritage, whether it’s artifacts, documents, books or photographs of yesteryear.

The Mac’s Farm & ONE good egg are holding an Open day on Sunday April 29th from 10.00am –4.00pm, on their Organic Free Range egg Farm in the beautiful village of Ditchling in East Sussex. They hope to raise enough money in just ONE day to fund a small egg farm in Malawi

The aim is to let about 2000 people come and have a fun day out on a real working farm, learn about One good eggs, and the life changing farms that they help fund in Malawi. You can meet the family behind the farm & enjoy walking around the farm trail, even picking your very own ONE eggs from inside the sheds.

All they ask is for a donation of a £1 a person on entry, the whole amount will go towards raising enough money to fund a new farm in Malawi.

There will also be a Farmers market, hog roast & BBQ, Craft stalls, local bands, Local ice cream, Veggie & Vegan hot food stall, Vintage fair, Ditchling Morris men, Homemade cake & tea, kids corner etc. The ONE Difference foundation will also be talking and showing people there products and the like for like projects that they fund.

ONE good egg is an egg that makes a difference to others, by buying ONE good eggs from your supermarket your helping to fund community egg farming projects in some of the poorest parts of Malawi, helping people build better lives.

Most people in rural Malawi who live in households without any form of small livestock , eat on average just 1 egg a YEAR, that’s like having an egg on your birthday.

By funding these farms, people and there families, are getting a great source of food & much needed protein as well as an income, and YOU have made a difference !

The Mac’s farm have been supplying ONE egg since it was launched last April. They have a long family history of farming dating back 3 generations ( Grandma who will be 100 years old in April, farmed in South heighton, near Newhaven ) and Susie Mac’s Mum & Dad founded Grassington Rangers Ltd, which are the largest family owned producers of Organic egg in the UK, with Susie’s brothers Richard and Andrew both living and working with there families on there own farms also in East Sussex.

Susie, husband Danny and there 4 children all live on the Mac’s Organic egg farm in Ditchling, within part of the newly formed South Downs National Park.

The Mac’s Farm are Open everyday from 9.00-12.00am for you to come in and buy ONE good eggs directly from the gate, and meet the girls that are changing lives everyday, by laying ONE good eggs.

The Mac’s Farm always put Animal Welfare first and promote good farming practise, for many years have been re homing there girls at the end of there commercial life, with the help of Brighton animal action, a local animal rights organisations that help re home 1000s of girls every year.

They have held many events over the years, all raising money for charity and local organisations, but this will be the biggest yet, so come and join them for some fun with your family.

Plumpton College is pleased with the outcome of its recent Ofsted inspection which graded the College as good with many outstanding features. Outstanding areas include the provision in Agriculture, Countryside and Game keeping, College Governance, work with, and results for, 14 to 16-year-olds who attend the college from schools and the safeguarding of students.

The inspection noted the College’s good reputation, the strong growth in recent years, high level of support given to students, the excellent progress and outcomes for students in terms of examination results and progression into employment, good employer focused work and the good standard of its specialist teaching resources including the large diverse estate which is very effectively used for teaching.

The College Principal, Des Lambert, commented, “This is a very pleasing report which accurately reflects the college’s commitment both to its students and their education and to the extensive rural industries and communities which the college serves. The report is an excellent outcome for the College. As with any report there are areas where extra focus is needed but these are small compared to the many good and excellent features of the College recognised in the report.’’

Ron Norkett seems to me to be a man who means what he says and that’s very good news for his clients – because he runs Norkett Building Services. And as everybody knows, small, family-run building firms who fulfil all their promises are jewels beyond price.

Although they’ve been in business for over 18 years now, until three years ago Norkett were famous for their conservatories – indeed they still are – but as more and more clients commented on the excellence of their work, they gradually changed the emphasis to accommodate the full range of building services.

A taste of the Tarana Dining Experience

Perched elegantly on Lingfield’s village High Street is Tarana – a dining experience like no other and as far from an ordinary curry house as it is possible to be.

I am welcomed by one of Tarana’s 20 staff members, all in traditional Indian dress and wonderfully polite. Taking a seat at the bar while I wait for Shah Koreshi, the owner and designer of this stunning restaurant, my eyes scan the unashamedly glamorous surroundings. Is that an underground widescreen TV, encapsulated in a shimmering black floor I can see below my feet? Yes, it is!

Tarana in Lingfield is Shah’s most recent venture. Opened only three months ago, it is the perfect accompaniment to Lingfield’s Thai Lounge, situated on the same premises. It is fast becoming as popular as Shah’s multi-award winning Tarana in Turner’s Hill, voted Best Restaurant in the UK by The Spice Times.

“I wanted to create a unique concept that customers will remember,” says Shah. “I have travelled the world to get ideas and merged them together to create a place where diners can enjoy exceptional Thai and Indian food in contemporary surroundings. Nowhere is comparable.”

As Shah gives me a tour of the 250 seater restaurant, it is obvious that no expense has been spared to create the exclusive Tarana Dining Experience. From the intimate leather-seated booths and elegantly dressed tables, to the funky bar and aquarium toilet tanks (complete with goldfish), Shah’s attention to detail is astounding.

A sensational fish tank comprises the entire back wall, exotically filled with piranhas imported from Mexico. “Our food and service is of the same high quality as the decor,” says Shah. “Customer service is an art. We train our waiting staff and create our chefs to deliver the highest standards.”

Shah invites me to sample some Chicken Tikka and I eagerly await the arrival of the dish: delicate chunks of fiery orange chicken nestled next to a fresh Indian salad. The authentic spices – a perfect blend of ginger, paprika, tamarind and garlic – are imported directly from Bangladesh and, combined with the contemporary presentation, make a faultless dish. At just £3.95 for a starter or £6.50 for a main Tikka, this is high class food at high street prices. “We can offer such great value because we are so popular. 99% of our customers are regulars,” says Shah. “We want people to come out and enjoy great food and great service without having to pay through the nose.”

Outstanding Ofsted for LVS Hassocks

LVS Hassocks is celebrating after receiving an ‘outstanding’ from Ofsted following their welfare inspection report.

The inspection carried out in December, looked at the residential aspect of the school that caters for young people with Asperger’s and autism. In the report released last week, inspectors commented: “This residential special school provides outstanding residential provision, where pupils thrive within a nurturing environment which clearly focuses on their individuality.”

The commitment and quality of the staff was recognised in the report, commenting on how staff “work together to help pupils achieve, and in many cases exceed, their potential”.

LVS Hassocks, opened in 2009 and was praised for being ambitious and for its successful practice in continuing to improve the outcomes for pupils. During their visit inspectors saw the Oast Café in action and commented: “The opening of the on-site community café, where older pupils take a lead role, is bringing local people into the school. As a result pupils are gaining new skills that they can use in adult life and thoroughly enjoy and benefit from the experience.”

Headteacher, Sarah Sherwood said: “We are absolutely delighted to have again achieved an outstanding Ofsted Social Care Inspection, and feel that the report reflects the passion that staff have in ensuring that young people achieve at the highest levels. The New Year has already seen some new challenges for the older pupils, with the opening of an independent living area. Where the expectation is for the students to get themselves up, dressed and ready for school with minimum staff support, and where following careful risk assessment access local facilities independently.”

DEFUSE THE DANGER! IT'S ELECTRICAL FIRE SAFETY WEEK

Firefighters are urging people not to let electrical failures set their world alight as part of Electrical Fire Safety Week next week (January 23 to January 29).

From faulty fridges and ignored irons to dodgy plugs and wiring, electrical equipment is an often overlooked fire hazard in the home. But the reality is that faulty or misused electrical equipment is one of the biggest causes of accidental house fires in the country.

In West Sussex, in 2011 alone, there were 122 electrical fires, accounting for over quarter of all accidental fires that crews were called to.

Community Risk Reduction Manager for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, Kathy Burke, said:

"Electrical equipment is a common and necessary part of our everyday lives, from essentials like heating and lighting to more hi-tech items like entertainment systems, so it's really important to be sure that electrical equipment is in good working order and is operated properly.

"Appliances, plugs and cables that are old, or poorly wired, can be a danger. Try and look out for the warning signs - hot plugs or sockets, scorch marks, fuses that continually blow, a burning smell coming from the appliance or wiring, flickering lights - all these are signs of loose wiring or other electrical problems" explained Kathy.

"The truth is most fires are preventable. It's so easy to think it's not going to happen to you, but people really can't afford to be complacent where electrical safety is concerned. By following some simple steps, you can help keep you and your loved ones safe from fire."

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service offers the following safety advice:

Don't overload plug sockets
Regularly check for worn or frayed wires
Ideally, get electrical appliances that run at high speed or contain motors, like washing machines, serviced once a year by a qualified electrician
Don't leave washing machines, dishwashers or tumble dryers on overnight or while you are out
Unplug appliances when not in use
Consider using an RCD (Residual Current Device) which works like a circuit breaker to protect against electric shocks and reduces the risk of electrical fires
If using an electric blanket ensure you switch it off and unplug it before you go to bed unless it has a thermostat for safe all-night use
Keep heaters clear of curtains and furniture and do not use them to dry clothes
Get an early warning rather than no warning - make sure you have a smoke detector on each level of your home and don't forget to pull your finger out for that weekly test!

Following on from the massive successes of Laura’s Star and The Big Enormous Present at The Hawth Pied Piper return with a new play to celebrate London 2012, specially written by award winning playwright Mike Kenny (whose adaptation of The Railway Children has been delighting audiences worldwide).

Frankly, Ollie can’t see the point of his Great Gran; and now it’s even worse. She fell and hurt her hip and had to come to stay. Ollie has had to give up his room.

And what can she do? She can’t run, jump, skate, anything. She can hardly stand.

However she can do something he can’t. She can swim. In fact, she can do it rather well. There was a time she did it at the Olympic Games in London. No! Not those Olympic Games. The other ones in 1948....when the athletes had to bring their own towels!

50 minutes of exciting theatre and live music, for ages 4 and up.

Way Out West, by Paul Hodson (writer of Meeting Joe Strummer), is a meditation on loneliness and grief but at first glance it could just be a funny play fuelled by beer and coincidence

Two men walk into a pub... and then it stops being normal.

Two strangers meet in a busy bar. Peter is convinced that he has met Simon somewhere before; Simon totally denies it. Pints are drunk; conversation covers the creation of the universe, the meaning of happiness, the chemical construction of pork scratchings and how they seem to know more about each other than complete strangers could, or should. And they both seem to recollect dreams in which they met Laurel and Hardy and each other.

As the alcohol kicks in Simon and Peter find themselves lurching towards an unnerving philosophical and spiritual world, where it becomes a distinct possibility that they are Laurel and Hardy reincarnated...

But that’s simply laughable, absurd and beyond comprehension isn’t it?

The evening gets messy. Simon and Peter veer from displays of extreme vulnerability and love, to antagonism and on towards the brink of violence. Last orders are called, the two square up, vowing never to lay eyes on each other ever again, then the strains of Commencement to Dancing from Way Out West are heard. The fuming, angry lads are transformed, performing a hilarious, gentle dance, just as Laurel and Hardy would have done.

Opening with IONA supported by JULIE HALL on Friday 2nd March the 4th Annual Burgess Hill Fairtrade Festival promises to be an amazing 10 day event. It runs from Friday 2nd March 2012 to Sunday 11th March 2012 and in addition to IONA includes folk legends MARTIN CARTHY & DAVE SWARBRICK on Friday 9th March. This heroic duo will be joined by 2011 BBC 2 Horizon Award winner EWAN McLENNAN.

Between these two events we will be holding Burgess Hill's first ever DAY OF DANCE on Saturday 3rd March with Morris sides, street dance and latin american and then in the evening KATE'S KITCHEN BAND will be serving up their incredible ceilidh, wonderfully led by caller Whispering Dave.

Woodborne Kitchens: Wood is good in the heart of the home

Your kitchen is the social hub of your home, a place to gather and share company. This room, perhaps more than any other, needs to work and look fantastic.

David Otway of Woodborne Kitchens showed me around the showroom in Albourne and explained how a solid wood kitchen differs from the chipboard equivalent. Far from being just cosmetically superior, there are technical and health reasons why wood is better to use in the heart of the home. No chipboard or MDF is used at Woodborne; carcasses are solid seasoned 26mm pine from FSC certified sustainable sources which means that none of the toxins associated with cheaper materials are present where food preparation is an issue.

The display units at the showroom exude quality. David leads the design team and he personally oversees each project following an initial free consultation, to gauge the lifestyle of each client. I was struck by the variety of colours and subtle finishes offered – beautiful vintage shades in classic Farrow & Ball paints, distressed or weathered effects, all handpainted for a timeless look that will last and function effortlessly.

David employs expert, long-serving local craftspeople and Woodborne may well be the only outlet in Sussex to provide solid wood carcasses, drawers and doors. The luxury bespoke kitchens have proved very popular in all types of residential properties, from farmhouses and barn conversions to Edwardian townhouses and Victorian mansions. David exhibits at the prestigious ‘Grand Design’ Show in London and Birmingham and he works closely with London designers on top quality projects. Because Woodborne’s ‘appointment only’ showroom is in the heart of Sussex, the customer benefits from avoiding high street prices and the associated sales techniques.

While solid wood can withstand the most demanding family usage, it’s the aesthetic appeal of these kitchens that gives them the edge. I noticed how walnut, oak and cherry woods contrast beautifully with the muted colour palettes available; French Grey and Bone are currently popular while I was drawn to the classic Cornflower and the calming Sage. Worktops can either be solid wood or striking granite or quartz; the permutations are limitless, which is apt as David says he is in the business of “designing dreams”. He understands the importance of detail: he sources handles, appliances and even the wire trays that sit snug inside units, all of which open with an effortless smoothness and shut with a satisfying soft click.

People are rediscovering the kitchen as the social hub of the home and a place where all family members can share time, food and company. Woodborne can create a superb traditional kitchen that will last a lifetime and provide that essential place to be a family again.
