Forest Row Film Society: Films in January 2012

Three Colours: Blue Friday 13 Jan 8pm

“if film aspires to be part of culture, it should do the things great literature, music and art do: elevate the spirit, help us understand ourselves and the world around us and give people the feeling they are not alone” Krzysztof Kieslowski
One of the greatest, most moving films ever made, starring Juliette Binoche, and with a fantastic score by Zbigniew Preisner.
Director: Krzysztof Kieslowski, France/Poland 1993, 98 min, 15

Moomins and the Comet Chase Sunday 15 Jan 3pm

In this charming animation based on the books by Tove Jansson, Moomintroll and his family and friends are alarmed by the threatening appearance of a comet in the sky. Younger children will love this delightful film and its characters, and adults will relish a nostalgic journey back to the imagination of their own childhood.
Director: Maria Lindberg, Finland 2010, 75 min

John Rabe Friday 20 Jan 8pm

When the Imperial Japanese Army invaded China and occupied Nanking in 1937, John Rabe, German manager of Siemens' China branch, risked his life to save 200,000 civilians. A powerful and, at times, brutal film with great performances from Ulrich Tukur, Steve Buscemi and Anne Consigny.
Director: Florian Gallenberger, Germany 2009, 129 min, 15

Nosferatu Friday 3 Feb 8pm

“Watching Nosferatu is like standing in the same room as death itself, a brooding chamber piece of gothic ruminations and occult imagery, of the flickering light of the world waging a losing battle against the overwhelming darkness.” Slant magazine
The first great vampire film, and it still remains one of the scariest with its expressionist aesthetic and Max Schrek as Count Orlok.
Director: F.W. Murnau, Germany 1922, 94 min, PG

The Great White Silence Saturday 4 Feb 3pm

Even after a hundred years, Captain Scott’s doomed expedition to the South Pole remains a moving monument to courage and adventure. Equally startling is this official film of the expedition, now beautifully restored by the BFI to commemorate the centenary of the expedition reaching the South Pole on 17 January 1912.
Director: Herbert G. Ponting, UK 1924, 108 min, U

The Passion of Joan of Arc Saturday 4 Feb 8pm

With its stunning imagery and close-ups, Dreyer’s film is an incredible depiction of faith, suffering, and redemption. Drawing on the transcripts of the original trial, it is Joan’s pain and anguish that is its main focus, with Maria Falconetti giving one of the greatest performances ever recorded on film.
Director: Carl Dreyer, France 1928, 82 min, PG

The Adventures of Prince Achmed Sunday 5 Feb 3pm

“A masterpiece” Jean Renoir
Loosely based on A Thousand and One Arabian Nights, this beautiful and unique film was hailed as history’s first animated (silhouette) feature, primitive and utterly sophisticated at the same time.

Get set for the 1st Sussex Living Marathon

A major new festival of running is coming to Mid Sussex in May 2012, with the launch of the Sussex Living Marathon Weekend. The event was officially announced on 28th December by the main sponsor, Sussex Living together with the three Town Councils and Mid Sussex District Council.
This initiative is set to boost the local economy with hundreds of runners expected to turn out across the District and join in the Marathon Weekend over the May Bank Holiday in 2012..
This unique event will bring races to the heart of Burgess Hill, East Grinstead and Haywards Heath with all three using routes that, as far as possible, will be traffic free – using footpaths and trails in and around the towns. Courses will be suitable for both experienced runners and those new to running with the hope that the event will encourage many local people to put on their trainers and look to achieve their own personal milestones.
Three races are planned over the weekend; beginning with a 10-mile race in East Grinstead race on Saturday 5th May, moving to Haywards Heath for a 10k race on Sunday 6th May and rounding off the event and the holiday weekend with a 10k race in Burgess Hill on Monday 7th May. Combined, the three races combined will cover a total of 26.2 miles – the classic marathon distance. Runners are able to enter each race individually, but those completing all three will receive a special commemorative Sussex Living Marathon Weekend medal.
In addition to the main races, there will be family and corporate relay events in East Grinstead and Haywards Heath with each member of a three-person team running just over three miles for their team. Children’s races will also be featured in each location. Runners and spectators will enjoy a range of attractions and entertainment at the three starting locations and hopefully the towns will turn out in force to cheer on the runners.
The Sussex Living Marathon Weekend wants as many charities as possible to have the opportunity of raising funds via the event and local good causes are set to benefit as they recruit runners to raise funds on their behalf. In addition, any proceeds from the event will benefit local charities nominated by each of the Town Councils. Local businesses are also being encouraged to get involved either through entering teams, sponsoring and supporting the races or offering discounts to runners taking part.
It’s very exciting to be involved in bringing this new sporting event to Mid Sussex. It’s unique and will be something the whole District can be proud of and join in with. We look forward to welcoming the influx of runners and visitors to the area. This will have a positive economic impact on local towns and businesses”, said Councillor Mims Davies, from Haywards Heath Town Council and Mid Sussex District Council. “Many local businesses are set to be involved as event supporters or will be participating in the event as a team. This Marathon weekend promises to be a lively, fun-packed time for all the family. I urge everyone from fun runners to seasoned runners to sign up to the challenge!”
“We are delighted to be sponsoring this brilliant event in Mid Sussex,” said Tanis Banham, Director of Sussex Living. “As well as the healthy and fun side of the event, the Sussex Living Marathon will also attract lots of visitors to this beautiful part of the world, which I hope will be good for everyone’s business, up and down the district.”
More information on the Sussex Living Marathon Weekend can be found in your January edition of Sussex Living. Full entry details, including information on how to enter online or by post, are available at www.nice-work.org.uk. The Sussex Living Marathon Weekend website is currently under construction and will be available shortly.

Vineyard Tour: Court Garden Farm

Saturday 14th January 2012
Saturday 4th February 2012

On Saturday afternoons Howard Corney leads a small group on a tour of the vineyard.

The group meets in the beautiful Sussex Barn where they are served tea and homemade cake, before having a short talk about the history of wine growing in England.

We then set off on a short walk around the vineyard and discuss some of the jobs that take place in the vineyard throughout the year.

On the way back to the Sussex Barn we call into the temperature controlled cellar and inspect the bottles maturing and discuss the final processes of riddling and disgorging.

Back in the barn we have a comparative tasting between our Court Garden Sparkling Wine and a well known Champagne.

Please Telephone 01273 844479 to book your tour: Vouchers for tours available to make perfect presents.

The tours start at 3.00 pm there is a charge of £8.00 per person, the tour lasts about an hour and a half. There is absolutely no obligation to buy, but for the convenience of those who can't get through the week-end without a bottle, some stock will be available. Credit cards are welcome.

The Hawth, Crawley: Romeo and Juliet

Shakespeare 4 Kidz present

ROMEO AND JULIET

Friday 27 January 10.30am & 1.30pm, The Hawth Crawley

Children’s favourites Shakespeare 4 Kidz are back! The company will be at The Hawth with Romeo and Juliet in January.

S4K has introduced millions of young people to the magical world of Shakespeare over the last 15 years with its modern musical adaptations of not only Romeo and Juliet but also Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night, The Tempest and even Hamlet.

Children love the shows because they can understand them. The complicated stories and complex text are simplified by the use of modern language linking together the most famous and best-loved lines. And there are catchy songs and dances too.

Shakespeare’s tragedy of the star-crossed teenagers is the probably the most famous love story in the world. It’s been retold in countless ways since Shakespeare first put his play on stage some 400 years ago. But never has it been told in the same exuberant child-friendly way which Shakespeare 4 Kidz promise.

Love and hate, laughter and tears, politics and religion, power and passion – S4K’s Romeo and Juliet has got them all – and in a way everyone can relate to. The themes are as relevant and topical now as at any time in the play’s history and S4K are experts at putting the play’s message across with a unique balance of comedy and poignancy.

Children as young as eight can enjoy this show. And adults who have been put off Shakespeare because they remember boring lessons at school will be amazed at how it shakes up Shakespeare to tell the tale clearly and concisely.

Director and S4K founder Julian Chenery is thrilled to have one of his musicals on tour again.

“The theatres we have chosen to visit are places there is traditionally a massive demand to see us and where we have been playing to packed houses for years and years.”

S4K’s Romeo and Juliet is at The Hawth In Crawley on Friday January 27 with performances at 10.30am and 1.30pm. Box office: 01293 553636.

Tickets priced £16.50 (child/groups: £10) are available from The Hawth box office on 01293 553636 or you can book online at www.hawth.co.uk.

The Olympic Torch helps bring about a brighter future for LVS Hassocks

Liam Pope and Charlie Ries Coward from LVS Hassocks had the experience of a life-time, when they carried the Olympic Torch on stage, at the ALMR Christmas Lunch in London on Thursday. This momentous occasion was made even more amazing when £20,000 was raised for the school, thanks to the guests at the luncheon - all members of the drinks traded industry.

The school in Sayers Common is managed and run by the Licensed Trade Charity, and offers specialist education for young people with Asperger’s and autism. Its aim is to develop the students’ skills and opportunities for employment and this substantial amount of money will be used to support the new NVQ’s in food preparation and cooking being taught at the school. From teaching staff, to support for work experience and equipment, this programme will help the young people at the school have a brighter future as currently over 85% of adults with autism are not in full time paid employment.

HENFIELD CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION IS A WINNER

HENFIELD celebrated the Spirit of Christmas on Friday with fairground rides, food stalls, musical groups and Santa Claus in the High Street.

Charity fund-raising stalls, traders in fancy dress and local produce displays along the length of the High Street were highlights.

Santa’s sleigh (courtesy of the BP Guild) were in the centre of the village and Santa was in his grotto nearby in the bus shelter, run by Henfield Youth Club.

Shops were open with refreshments for customers and various food and charity stalls, including Friends of St. Barnabas House, with carol singing and music by the Henfield Carollers to raise funds for The Children’s Society.

Henfield Free Church choir sang on the steps to raise charity funds and next door at The Plough, Carole and Neil Caudwell raised funds for the BP Guild with a barbeque.

Outside Jasmines the Florists, Rushfields Farm Shop gave out samples of their sausages and displayed local produce.

Jeremy’s, the fruit and veg shop, provided hot chestnuts while Henfield Club organised a cupcake competition.

Nigel Fitzsimmons, Town Centres Officer for Horsham District Council, and Tony Jackson, Henfield Community Partnership chairman, awarded certificates for best shop window displays.

Winners were: White Mischief (best use of colour), Hamfelds (best use of space), Henfield Furnishings (best theme) and Bay Tree Trading (best lighting).

As well as certificates the owners won meals at The White Hart, The Plough, The George and Taste Deli.

Al Baddar’s hairdressing salon featured a young group, the Baysiders, singing classic pop hits, while at Richwards Estate Agents a jazz band featuring manager Simon Anckorn on keyboard entertained customers and visitors.

Shaylers Fairgrounds provided rides for children on a roundabout based on the Setyres forecourt.

Children’s fancy dress winner was Teddy Nevatt (two) as The Showman and the adult winners were the staff of Hartleys wine merchants who dressed as pantomime dames.

Henfield Enterprise chairman Mike Beardall said: “We were lucky with the weather and there was a great atmosphere in the High Street, with record numbers of people out celebrating.

“Our thanks to all the traders and volunteers who made the evening so successful and provided entertainment and food.”

The annual Chairman’s Award for staff service went to Top Shelf and Village Care.

Europe on your Doorstep exhibition gets off to a flying start

On Friday evening (2nd December) teachers, parents and their children, town councillors and the Mayor, and the Chairman and members of the East Grinstead Town Twinning Association assembled in the Greenstede Gallery at Chequer Mead, East Grinstead, together with representatives from our French and German twin towns, Bourg de Péage and Mindelheim, for the launch of an exhibition celebrating the work of local schools in promoting foreign languages and links with other countries.

All our schools provided colourful and engrossing exhibits, and the East Grinstead Association and the town library also made an excellent contribution. Among the many examples of outstanding work done to promote international links was a stand devoted to eTwinning, an initiative sponsored by the British Council, showing how lively exchanges had been going on between young people in East Grinstead and Kabul.

The Mayor welcomed our guests from France and Germany, Florence Gonguet-Rey, Elfriede Röthinger and Sabine Klaus, and expressed his appreciation of the work which had gone into the exhibition and his admiration of the range of achievement on display.

Ken Averill, Chairman of Town Twinning, thanked everyone who had contributed to the success of the exhibition, especially the teachers and children involved, and our visitors praised the warm welcome they had received when visiting local schools.

Certificates and prizes were awarded to the winners of a poster competition sponsored by Town Twinning, and all were warmly applauded. Guests then enjoyed a buffet and drinks provided by Twinners.

Group B Strep Support:

Babies are dying needlessly in the UK through ignorance and unavailability of tests routinely offered in other western countries

A new opinion poll has found that most young women support the introduction of a national screening programme to detect Group B Strep in pregnant women.

A recent survey conducted by ComRes on behalf of Group B Strep Support demonstrated that while more than half (54%) the women aged between 20-35 surveyed had heard of group B Strep, only 20% knew what it was.

The survey also showed that once young women are made aware of the dangers of group B Strep in pregnancy the overwhelming majority believe that pregnant women should always be offered information, tests and, when the bacteria is detected, antibiotics in labour.

· 92% believe that information on group B Strep should be given to all pregnant women

· 92% would welcome the opportunity for pregnant women to be screened for group B Strep in the later stages of pregnancy and believe this should be offered to women routinely

· 95% believe antibiotics should be offered in labour to women with group B Strep and that they themselves would definitely or probably accept the offer (89%)

Jane Plumb, Chief Executive of Group B Strep Support said

“Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is the UK’s most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborn babies. Every year, around 340 babies develop GBS infection within seven days of birth. Of those, one in ten will die while around one in five will be permanently disabled.

This is needless, because with proper information, testing and treatment - as is routine in the US, Canada, Australia and many European countries - most of these tragic cases could be avoided. The Government should introduce a national screening programme for Group B Strep at the earliest opportunity.”

Media Doctor Dr Chris Steele MBE said: “At present there is no national testing for group B Strep in pregnancy. The tests that are done are not designed to detect GBS and give a high level of falsely negative results, meaning women think they are free from GBS when they are not. Tests are available for GBS which pose no risk to mother or baby, but they are currently only available privately. They should be offered on the NHS.

The Government should act now to ensure women get the very best advice and support during their pregnancy. This should include information on the serious nature of Group B Strep infection, the offer of testing, followed by appropriate antibiotics during labour to protect the baby from infection.”

Charlotte Cheshire a parent from Telford, said: “The consequence of Group B Strep infection is devastating.

When Adam was born in March 2011 he appeared a happy and healthy little boy. However, by the morning after his birth he was grunting and not feeding and the staff quickly realised something was wrong. Adam stopped breathing, began to have seizures and was running a high fever. He was placed on a cocktail of antibiotics while the staff confirmed the diagnosis of group B strep infection. We were told he was not expected to live and if he did survive he could be severely disabled.

Adam survived but was in intensive care for the first 23 days of his life and will require intensive, on-going monitoring throughout his childhood. At present, Adam’s only identified long term problem is severe hearing damage. It could have been so much worse.

Yet all this could have been averted – if I’d had a sensitive GBS test late in pregnancy, it would almost definitely have found GBS and, with antibiotics from the start of labour, Adam could have been protected.

I am Canadian and if I had chosen to have Adam in my native country, sensitive testing for GBS is routine as it is in many other western and European countries and we could have avoided the distress, trauma and consequences of GBS infection.

Pregnant women should ask about group B Strep and the Government should ensure that information is given to all pregnant women. I know that routine testing is being considered. I believe a national programme should be introduced as soon as possible to reduce the number of families that have to suffer the horrors of GBS infection in their newborn babies.

I am calling on every politician in the land to demand that the health services in the UK act now and offer screening to pregnant women against this life threatening infection.”

In light of the poll findings, Group B Strep Support is asking that

· Information about GBS should be routinely given to all women as part of their antenatal care

· Sensitive testing for GBS should be made freely available within the NHS and offered to every pregnant woman whose baby is at low risk of developing GBS infection

· Antibiotics should be offered intravenously in labour to all mums whose babies are known to be at higher risk of developing GBS infection

· The use of the ‘standard’ test within the NHS for the detection of GBS carriage in pregnancy should cease and vaginal swabs from pregnant women should always be tested using a method that offers good sensitivity for GBS detection

The Hawth, Crawley – Way Out West

The Future is Unwritten present

WAY OUT WEST

Wednesday 1 February 7.45pm, The Hawth Studio Crawley

Way Out West is a new play combining sidesplitting comedy with heart-rending melancholy and ending with a very funny dance. What more could you want!

Way Out West, by Paul Hodson (writer of Meeting Joe Strummer), is a meditation on loneliness and grief but at first glance it could just be a funny play fuelled by beer and coincidence

Two men walk into a pub... and then it stops being normal.

Two strangers meet in a busy bar. Peter is convinced that he has met Simon somewhere before; Simon totally denies it. Pints are drunk; conversation covers the creation of the universe, the meaning of happiness, the chemical construction of pork scratchings and how they seem to know more about each other than complete strangers could, or should. And they both seem to recollect dreams in which they met Laurel and Hardy and each other.

As the alcohol kicks in Simon and Peter find themselves lurching towards an unnerving philosophical and spiritual world, where it becomes a distinct possibility that they are Laurel and Hardy reincarnated...

But that’s simply laughable, absurd and beyond comprehension isn’t it?

The evening gets messy. Simon and Peter veer from displays of extreme vulnerability and love, to antagonism and on towards the brink of violence. Last orders are called, the two square up, vowing never to lay eyes on each other ever again, then the strains of Commencement to Dancing from Way Out West are heard. The fuming, angry lads are transformed, performing a hilarious, gentle dance, just as Laurel and Hardy would have done.

Absurd and wonderful – book your tickets now.

Tickets priced £14 (discounts: £12) are available from The Hawth box office on 01293 553636 or you can book online at www.hawth.co.uk.

Sightsavers unearths its past and celebrates 40 years in Sussex

Haywards Heath-based development charity Sightsavers celebrates 40 years in Sussex today by releasing film unearthed from its archives. The film reels, many of which are previously unseen, show how the charity has transformed the lives of thousands of blind and disabled people over the last four decades.

Last year the charity approached film preservation and archiving specialists Screen Archive South East, based at the University of Brighton. Sightsavers enlisted their help transferring the film reels that had been discovered in the depths of Grosvenor Hall, the charity’s current headquarters.

The painstaking job of going through all the old film reels was taken on by archivist Ine van Dooren, who spent many days examining and documenting the footage before they were conserved and digitised. They can now be seen once again on DVD. Ine presented the films today to Lady Wilson, the widow of Sightsavers' founder the late Sir John Wilson, and Elaine Ireland, Head of Policy at Sightsavers.

Watching the footage for the first time brought back some poignant memories remarked Lady Wilson, adding: “I can remember when we first moved to Sussex back in December 1971 and the Queen opened our first headquarters in Heath Road before we moved to Grosvenor Hall. I am immensely proud that 40 years later Sightsavers is still in Sussex. Better still Sightsavers is now the county’s largest international charity and raises millions of pounds every year to help vital work in over 30 developing countries treating and curing preventable blindness.”

Said Elaine Ireland: “2011 has been a momentous year for Sightsavers’ profile, which started when we were chosen as one of the charities to benefit from BBC Comic Relief and the BT Red Nose Day Desert Trek. Since then we have won the seasonal appeal 2011-2012 with the Financial Times; and TV presenter Lorraine Kelly has also agreed to be our new ambassador.

“Sussex has provided a wonderful home for us for the last 40 years and thanks to the help of Screen Archive we have the rare opportunity to reflect on how much has been achieved in this time. It makes me feel very proud and positive about the future.”

Screen Archive South East is also looking forward to celebrating their own 20th anniversary in 2012 and without their professional support, Sightsavers would not have been able to bring to light this important film for the future. Along with 10,000 other films about life, people and organisations in Sussex and the South East region, Sighstavers’ films will be preserved and stored in the archive’s film vault at the West Sussex Record Office in Chichester.

Said Ine: “We have thoroughly enjoyed working with Sightsavers and celebrating our anniversaries together! I hope we will be able to collaborate again in the future if any more film reels and video tapes are discovered. Our work at the archive not only uncovers important historical footage taken of the South East but we also look to work with organisations based in the region to preserve important footage that might relate to their work whether that be here or abroad.”

Sightsavers works in more than 30 developing countries to prevent and cure blindness and to support those who are visually impaired through education and training. Working with its local partners, in 2010 Sightsavers has protected over 23 million people against river blindness; performed over 270,000 sight-restoring cataract operations; and treated over one million people for trachoma. It also supports the vital training of health professionals, the promotion of independence for people who are blind and inclusive education for blind and visually impaired children.

For those who haven’t already heard, major changes are taking place at Sussex Living. Tanis Banham, our Sales Director, has bought the company and is now the sole owner and Managing Director of the business.
