Since the national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme started, more Mid Sussex food businesses have opened and a higher number are achieving better scores, month after month. This is great news for businesses and excellent news for the customers eating at the restaurants, pubs or hotels in the district.
Good food hygiene is getting easier to spot these days, with the introduction in April 2011 of the national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. Restaurants, pubs, hotels, (as well as cafes, takeaways and other places selling or serving food) are now being rated from 0 - 5 on their hygiene standards when a food hygiene inspection is carried out by Mid Sussex District Council.
Thanks to additional support and training by Mid Sussex District Council, 927 food businesses score between 3 and 5, with 616 scoring top marks. As well as this, an additional 126 food businesses have opened and the Council has assisted the owners by providing advice and starter packs to help them run a successful outlet.
With Christmas fast approaching, plans are being made for the festive period. So, if you are organising a gathering with family, friends or work colleagues at a local restaurant, pub or hotel, you can now check out the food hygiene rating, as well as the menu. It is easy to see the ratings by going to www.food.gov.uk/ratings. Christmas party goers can also look out for the distinctive green and black stickers that businesses are encouraged to display at their outlets to tell their customers the rating they were given.
“I am sure being able to compare the food hygiene standards within pubs, restaurants or hotels will help when choosing where to arrange a Christmas party,” said Councillor Christopher Snowling, Cabinet Member for Health and Community. “It is only right that the customer is supplied with relevant information when deciding where to eat and I hope that visitors to the area see how well we compare with other districts and decide to make the most of the wide choice of establishments Mid Sussex has to offer.
“I am particularly pleased about the improvements in outlets’ scores and I believe much of this is down to high quality training from the council and forming good relationships with the business owners.”
Sussex Living magazine is a free monthly A4 glossy magazine for Mid Sussex with community and lifestyle editorial. We put more copies into Mid Sussex than any other quality publication, paid or free. 19,000 copies are printed and distributed throughout Mid Sussex and the surrounding villages. In the same area, a local county magazine, the Sunday Times and Cosmopolitan Magazine, circulate less than 3,000 copies between them.

Big boost for Mid Sussex businesses
New and growing businesses will welcome the news that Mid Sussex District Council will have £600k towards a scheme to create units on a brownfield site that it owns in Haywards Heath.
The investment is part of £15 million worth of support from West Sussex County Council for new projects to promote the local economy being developed in conjunction with the county’s district and borough councils. Mid Sussex District Council has proposed a scheme to build business units for new and growing companies on a brownfield site in its ownership.
“This is really tremendous news for Mid Sussex,” said Councillor John De Mierre, Cabinet Member for Economic Development. “This is a great place to start a business and, even in these difficult times, many new enterprises are emerging. For them to be able to nurture their businesses in new, purpose built and affordable incubator units will be a boost for the local economy. We need all our businesses to succeed, so we can create jobs and get as much growth into the economy as we can. The generous support of West Sussex County Council to back this major economic commitment by Mid Sussex District Council is very welcome.”

Ditichling Film Society: Made in Dagenham
On Thursday, 1 December 2011 our Christmas offering will be Made in Dagenham. In 1968 a group of female workers went on strike at the Ford Dagenham car plant. Crammed into a rundown section of the factory the women coped without complaint until the bosses re-graded the women’s pay to “unskilled” and they went on strike. Their protest made national news and the strike became a template for achieving equal rights for women which successfully brought about the Sexual Discrimination Act of 1975. It is a poignant reflection on British social reform with a breezy modern tone evoking the Ealing style of humour. Hugely enjoyable, this fast paced film wonderfully captures the spirit of the sixties and features a great cast including Sally Hawkins as the feisty heroine, a brilliant portrayal of Barbara Castle by Miranda Richardson together with a terrific performance from Rosamund Pike.
Director: Nigel Cole. UK2010. 113 mins.
Please note that before our December film, in accordance with tradition, we will be serving our usual festive mulled wine and mince pies.
Ditchling Village Hall
Films start at 8.00pm. Doors open at 7.30 pm. Free coffee and biscuits beforehand and ample free parking behind the hall. Guests and temporary members are welcome for a small charge payable at the door.

Thinking of a way to entertain and involve a group of work colleagues or friends can be a daunting task. Albourne based Q Leisure have 14 years experience managing group events and offer adrenaline packed activities guaranteed to entice and excite. Perfect, if you are looking for an alternative and unique adventure for that Office Christmas Party!
It has been an exciting year for Q leisure with the development of their new Speedball Arena; a new high octane version of paintballing. An astro turf tournament arena with bright inflatable bunkers awaits you, making this an all year round thrilling activity! Instead of floundering in mud trying to keep your balance, an experience with most traditional paint balling sites, the astro turf is drained from underneath, keeping the surface dry and grippy allowing you to run around freely like a crazed mercenary shooting at your equally trigger happy mates!
Q Leisure is a family run business. “Everything is very personal here.” Enjoyment and quality fun are what matter and there are numerous activities to sample.
There is the quad bike trek winding through woodland and countryside, archery, clay pigeon and target shooting. There is also the pro kart racing which is pure thrills – the 40 mph machines are ground hugging, open-sided exhilaration on wheels!

Light Up Hassocks: It's Christmas
by Sherrian Gust
Join in the fun on 25th November when the village of Hassocks will once again celebrate the start of the Christmas season.
As the days get shorter we all look to find ways to light up where we live. We light our homes and increasingly, at Christmas, our streets. The earliest public display of Christmas lights was in 1880 when Thomas Edison strung his newly invented light bulbs around the outside of his laboratory in New Jersey so they could be seen from the railway.
Today we take displays in cities and large towns and their annual ‘celebrity’ switch-on for granted. Yet in smaller communities the picture is different. Here in Hassocks, where we have enjoyed Christmas lights since 2004, we rely on the generosity of local people organising and supporting events throughout the year so that we can raise the £5,000 needed annually to guarantee the festive display.
In the run-up to this year’s big switch-on, which will be on Friday 25th November, Michelle Binks, Chair of Light Up Hassocks, told me: “We’ve had fantastic support for all our fundraising throughout the year.
There’s a great community spirit here and local businesses and residents are keen to get involved. You follow us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/pages/Light-Up-Hassocks-Its-Christmas/257447150966872) and Twitter (@LightUpHassocks) too.
“I must also thank Burgess Hill District Lions Club for their generous donation which has paid for the Christmas lights in the tree outside Alan’s Fish & Chip Bar and who have invited Father Christmas to join us for the evening. Children can meet him in the grotto outside the Market Place (ex greengrocers) in Keymer Road. The Lions will also be bringing their musical float to get everyone in the Christmas mood.”
I discovered that this year it’s not just humans joining in. The Rev. Darryl Sinclair from the United Reformed Church explained. “For the first time there will be a nativity procession led by two donkeys. Joined by local children, they will walk from Hassocks Station down Keymer Road to form a nativity display outside the Church.”
Michelle summed up the results of the Light Up Hassocks fundraising. “We may not be able to match the London displays in Oxford Street or Regent Street (yet!) but everyone in Hassocks can feel proud that we’ve raised enough money through community effort to have an annual display since 2004. If you supported our recent Curry & Quiz Night, Silent Auction, Coffee Morning, Raffle, Station Collections or if you sponsored a light this year – thank you.”
Michelle finished by telling me that a mini Hassocks celebrity will be switching on the lights. “For the second year running, all the pupils at Hassocks Infant School have had the chance to design a poster for the Light Up Hassocks: It’s Christmas event and the winner will press the button at 5pm on 25th November.”
Last year Keymer Road became a Winter Wonderland with the lights shining on the early December snow. While not everyone may be keen for a repeat of that weather, let’s enjoy the fact that Hassocks will be lit up again for 2011 and that Christmas is almost here.

The Henfield Arts & Crafts Fayre 2011
On November 26th from 10am – 4pm, the 4th annual Henfield Arts & Crafts Fayre will take place at The Henfield Hall. It is a show case for local, talented artists and craftsmen, organised by Henfield residents, Julie Mitchell and Tracy Smyth and is a great place to start that dreaded Christmas shopping.
The Fayre will continue to support the local charity H.A.R.T. (Henfield Area Response Team) which provides a vital supporting role to the emergency services in the Henfield area.
All stallholders donate a percentage of their profits to the charity.
As visitors in previous years have commented, “This is not just your average craft fayre.”
All artists and craftsmen are selected individually to ensure all work on display is of a high standard and an excellent variety of crafts is maintained each year.
For those wishing to take a look at who will be exhibiting this year, the website dedicated to the event will give them all the information they need.
The fayre has become a family event, as there are items of interest for all ages. This year, in addition, there will be a childrens activity area with origami and plate painting activites. This will help to keep the children occupied whilst parents can have a browse through the variety of crafts on offer in the hall.
Those taking part always enjoy talking about their work with visitors and some are even able to demonstrate.
Visitors can also sit and enjoy a bacon roll or homemade cake, whilst making decisions about their purchases.
The organisers look forward to welcoming local residents and those from further afield. Please look out for the vibrant posters and boards advertising this event.
For more information and a list of exhibitors, please visit; www.henfieldartsandcrafts.co.uk

'Drinking kills your driving skills': West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service
Firefighters will be taking to the catwalk on Wednesday (November 23) as West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service launches its festive anti-drink driving campaign in Haywards Heath.
'Drinking Kills Your Driving Skills' is the theme for this year's campaign and the crew in Haywards Heath will be among those modelling specially designed t-shirts with the safety slogan at a launch event at Idlewild Bar & Kitchen on Wednesday evening.
Firefighters have joined forces with the bars in Haywards Heath and during the busy pre-Christmas period of Thursday 1st December to Saturday 3rd December bar staff in the Broadway will be wearing the eye-catching t-shirts, which have been specifically designed by the firefighters, to help raise awareness of the dangers of drink and driving.
The launch is being supported by Sussex Police, Mid Sussex District Council, Sussex Safer Roads Partnership and West Sussex County Council's Road Safety Team.
During the Christmas period last year (December 1 2010 to January 31st 2011) there were 42 people hurt at the scene of road traffic collisions across the county where a driver was impaired by alcohol or failed a breath test, 14 of those people were killed or seriously injured.
Watch Manager at Haywards Heath Fire Station, Matt Myerscough, said:
"Unfortunately, in Mid Sussex, we have the highest number of people killed or seriously injured on the county's roads so the crew at Haywards Heath decided to spearhead what we see as a life-saving campaign. This is something we intend to roll out across the whole county.
"The Broadway is a really busy nightspot and is always a popular choice for people's office Christmas parties, so it's an ideal location to kick off our anti-drink driving campaign. We're grateful for the tremendous support we're getting from the local bars and believe it can make a real difference in our efforts to reduce drink-driving on our roads.
"Our message is simple - if you are drinking, you will not be in full control of your car so you'll be putting yourself and others at risk. We think one death is one too many so the more people we can reach with that message, the more chance we have of achieving zero road deaths from drink driving."

MSDC: Wintery conditions are snow joke, so be prepared!
With weather forecasters predicting another cold winter, Mid Sussex District Council is encouraging residents to be prepared for snow and ice again this year.
The Government’s Chief Scientific Officer suggests that severe wintery weather is likely to become more common in the future and is advising residents to ‘Get Ready for Winter’. The Government has launched a new website www.direct.gov.getreadyforwinter to provide practical advice about how to plan for winter and how residents can help themselves and the wider community when severe weather arrives.
The Government provides practical advice about clearing snow and ice from around properties such as:
In icy and snowy conditions, West Sussex County Council is the local authority responsible for gritting the roads and Mid Sussex District Council is working closely with the Town and Parish Councils to ensure the areas’ needs are recognised by the County Council. The District Council treats its key car parks and footpaths in highly used areas to make them as safe as possible for the community.
“When heavy snow falls it is inevitable that there will be some disruption, but as residents we can do our best to keep it to a minimum by being prepared and helping each other,” said Councillor Christopher Snowling, Cabinet Member for Health and Community. “There is no law to stop us from clearing snow and ice from the pavement outside our property, pathways to our houses or other public spaces.
“As long as residents use common sense and are careful not to make the surface more dangerous than it was before then they are free and encouraged to help out. Clearing the snow at the front of your house may seem like a small step, but if we all do it then together we can quickly get our communities moving again after heavy snow.”
To find out more about being prepared and planning for emergencies, please visit www.midsussex.gov.uk/emergencies to read the Council’s ‘Guidance for Severe Weather’ and the ‘Emergency Plan’.
In the event of severe weather, Mid Sussex District Council will provide up to date messages on the www.midsussex.gov.uk website, or residents can visit the www.direct.gov.uk/getreadyforwinter pages for more information.

- If possible, clear snow when it’s fresh as it’s easier to move
- Do not use hot water on snow or ice, as it can re-freeze making conditions more hazardous
- Apply salt sparingly – as little as a tablespoonful can treat as much as a square metre of ice
- Sand, grit or ash can be used but it will not melt snow or ice, it will simply provide more grip.

Ditchling WI
Ditchling WI has been going continuously since 1917 and is one of the oldest in the country. In 2012 we shall hold our 95th celebration on the Green in July. Perhaps you are unaware of what the WI can do for you? It was first established to help women in rural communities by offering friendship and education.
Today we still aim at offering friendship and a means by which we can learn new skills and improve our knowledge over a wide range of subjects. The Eat Sussex Federation and Denman College Oxford both facilitate this. Personally I have been to classes in oil and water colour painting, clay silversmith work, Christmas decorations, flower arranging, jam making and silversmithing, to name but a few. We in Ditchling also bring in interesting speakers to our monthly meetings, which are held on the first Thursday of each month at 2.30-4.30 at the Village Hall.. Our November meeting on 3rd November is our AGM, which gives insight to anyone how the WI is run and what we have been up to over the past year.
December 1st is our Christmas Party which is great fun with a great tea! You are warmly invited to either or both of these meetings at no cost. We look forward to seeing you. Contact Jean Morley, President, 01273 843633.

Plumpton Racecourse has won a prestigious Special Judges Award at the 2011 Racecourse Association Showcase award ceremony at Epsom racecourse on Thursday 17th November. The Showcase awards celebrate excellence and innovation at racecourses during 2011.
The TurfTalk Staff Engagement Programme at Plumpton Racecourse was hailed as an effective new initiative and a model for all smaller racecourses.

This recognition follows shortly on from the award of a Quality plaque from Visit England for the second year, who assess Plumpton’s visitor experience as part of the first ever quality scheme for sport. Plumpton substantiialy improved it’s overall mark following a programme put in place using feedback from the first assessment, customers and staff suggestion schemes.
Claire Sheppard, Chief Executive of Plumpton Racecourse said “I am thrilled that Plumpton was given a special Judges Award - it was unexpected given the fierce competition from other excellent initiatives. The second year of official Visit England recognition also demonstrates how our team work together to provide an excellent experience for our visitors. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service News
RESIDENTS URGED TO SIGN SPRINKLER E-PETITION
West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is encouraging local residents to sign an e-petition to make sprinklers compulsory in all new dwellings.
If the petition receives the backing of 100,000 people it could be debated in Parliament. The petition comes following the recent introduction of a law in Wales, which will make sprinklers compulsory in all new homes.
Area Manager for Prevention and Protection, Adrian Murphy, said:
"Sprinklers are like the equivalent to having a firefighter ready and waiting in every room of your home. There are a lot of misunderstandings out there regarding how sprinklers work, but the reality is that they only activate when the temperature reaches over 68 degrees centigrade and even then only activate in affected rooms.
"There are a number of estates and blocks of flats across the country that have had sprinklers fitted and the residents in those areas have reported feeling much safer in their homes.
"The evidence speaks for itself - no one has ever died in a fire when their home was fitted with a sprinkler system. The Welsh Government have recognised this, which is why they have now introduced legislation, we would like to see similar legislation introduced here in England."
To pledge your support for the petition visit http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/4409
In addition to the e-petition a Private Members Bill is currently being progressed through the House of Commons. If passed the Bill would require a review of Building Regulations, taking into consideration the latest research on sprinkler systems, as current regulations quote out-dated research.

Denziloe: Luxe hair in Lindfield
by Nicola Hobbs
Celebrating the second anniversary of the luxury hair salon Denziloe, Sonia and Maria Grover have brought fashion, glamour and class to Sussex.
The Georgian exterior of Denziloe Hair Designers hides a magnificently contemporary interior, chic enough to rival the most ‘in vogue’ of city salons. In the two years since opening, the mother-daughter duo has evolved Denziloe while preserving its nostalgic essence as a tribute to the family history of the business. Joan Denziloe opened the hair salon in Lindfield High Street in November 1964, In November 2009 Maria, Joan’s granddaughter and Salon Manager, reopened Denziloe and has revived its grand reputation. As a young businesswoman and creative stylist, Maria has done an amazing job of growing Denziloe and helping to attract new people to the area.
Victoria Harbinson has recently joined the team. With eight years’ experience in hairdressing, including working on London catwalks and photo shoots, Victoria’s specialism in colouring and bridal hair is sure to enhance the on-trend cuts and styles available at Denziloe. “It’s great to grow the team because it encourages creativity,” says Maria. “We are all young, imaginative professionals and do regular training in London to ensure we are up to date with the latest fashions. We want people to realise that they don’t have to travel out of Sussex to get great hair styles.”
Whether you are male or female, younger or more mature, the team works with each client to create a hairstyle to suit your face shape, hair type and lifestyle. “Your hair is an important part of your personality and a statement about yourself. Whether you want a complete restyle or for us to trim and revitalise a classic cut, we carry out personalised consultations to make sure you will be happy with your look,” says Maria.
Denziloe uses the Sebastian range in their treatments – internationally acclaimed professional products renowned for their designer ‘cocktails’: mixtures of products such as Volume Punch, Sculpting Shot and Beach Bomb.
New to Denziloe this year is KeraStraight, an evolution in straightening and repair which puts an end to dull, frizzy and unmanageable hair. KeraStraight lasts up to four months and is not like chemical straightening, making it safe to use on coloured and permed hair, and even during pregnancy and breast feeding. “We’ve had such positive feedback from customers who’ve had KeraStraight and been so impressed they’ve come back again and again for it,” says Maria.
Denziloe have also introduced Gift Vouchers and Sebastian Gift Sets which make the perfect Christmas present for fashionistas, whatever their age. “We’re looking forward to our next year of business,” says Sonia. With new stylists, new products, and new services, this is a very exciting time for the salon.
Denziloe will be hosting a sociable mince pie and mulled wine filled open evening on Lindfield Christmas Festival Night on Tuesday 6th December, where you can have a look around and experience the glamour of the salon for yourself.

Lingfield Park Racing and Beer Festival
The recent second running of the Lingfield Park Racing and Beer Festival was hugely successful and enjoyed by nearly double the amount of people who came last year.
Run over both Friday 11th and Saturday 12th November, the days featured some great winter flat racing including two listed races on Saturday.
A big draw for many were the 23 ales that formed the beer festival. Many of them showcased the talents of local breweries from micro breweries to well known names, as well as more nationally recognised names. There were two competitions run in conjunction – one for the brewers of the fastest selling ale and one for the ale voted by the customers as “Favourite of the Festival”. With over 3000 pints on offer between all the ales, the fastest selling was the Sussex-based Dark Star Brewery’s Hophead, whilst the ale with the most number of votes was Surrey Hills’ Albury Ruby (Winter) variety. Congratulations to Mrs Wendy Ward of Twydall, Kent who voted for it and was chosen to win a VIP stay in the Lingfield Park Marriott Hotel & Country Club.
The race goers were entertained with live music from a local band on each day. On Friday ‘A Bag Full of Hats’ based mainly in East Grinstead played to an enthusiastic crowd whilst on Saturday ‘The United Stoats of America’ from Gatwick brought their unique skiffle take on popular songs to an energetic gathering.
Paul Shrimpton, Managing Director of Lingfield Park was pleased with the event. “Everyone who attended Lingfield Park over the past two race meetings has experienced a fantastic atmosphere alongside great racing action and something a little different. The added extra of the Beer Festival gives not only new customers a reason to come racing but also showcases some of the local talent we have for brewing across Surrey, Sussex and Kent. Thank-you to all those who put a lot of effort into making this event work so well. We’ll be looking to repeat it again next year as it’s becoming an eagerly anticipated event in our racing calendar. ”
Run over both Friday 11th and Saturday 12th November, the days featured some great winter flat racing including two listed races on Saturday.

Consultation Launched On School Expansion Plan
West Sussex County Council has launched a consultation on proposals to expand Bolnore Village Primary School in Mid Sussex.
The parent promoted foundation school opened in September 2009 and transferred to its new building in September 2010.
It was built as a one form of entry, 210-place school, with a two form entry ‘core’ so that it could be expanded should numbers increase.
The numbers of pupils in the area was higher earlier in the development than originally anticipated, leading to the 'Published Admission Number' being increased from 30 children in each year group to 45 from September 2010.
It is now proposed to expand the school further to its maximum two forms of entry - creating a 420-place school to cater for existing children from Bolnore Village and those from future housing.
It is the intention for the building project to start in 2012 with a view to increasing the Published Admission Number with effect from 2014 or as numbers dictate.
The cost of the work is estimated to be between £2.5m and £3m.
Due to the nature of this particular expansion, being by more than 30 places and more than 25 per cent of the school capacity, a full statutory public consultation is required.
It is a two stage process - initially a public consultation takes place over 4 weeks and then the Cabinet Member for Education and Schools, Peter Griffiths, will decide whether to publish statutory notices in local newspapers and objections can be raised over a further 4 weeks.
If Peter decides to proceed, the statutory notices are expected to be published in January 2012 and a final decision to be taken in February 2012.
Peter said: "The County Council has been closely monitoring the number of children in schools in the Haywards Heath locality and, in particular, in the growing community of Bolnore Village. There is evidence that the need for primary school places is growing as more houses are completed and occupied.
"In anticipation of future phases of house building, and to cater for existing families, the County Council is proposing to expand Bolnore Village Primary School from a school with 45 children in each year group to 60 children. Local views will be important to us in deciding if this is an appropriate response and I would encourage people to respond to the consultation."
Details of how to take part can be found from the front- page link to the consultation pages at www.westsussex.gov.uk

Micro-ID announces the introduction of a MINI-CHIP!
Keep the neighbours’ cats out of your house with a MICROCHIP Cat Flap
In over 20 years the implantable microchip has remained virtually unchanged, the standard 12mm x 2mm glass encapsulated chip has been the norm since its introduction in the late 80’s. Yes, some manufacturers have tried different coatings and encapsulations, but in essence the chip size remained static. This was mainly due to the performance and read range being sufficient to get the small portable scanners to pick up the signal coming from the passive chip.
Micro-ID is pleased to announce the introduction of its new “Mini-Chip”, an 8.5mm x 1.4mm glass encapsulated chip with a needle gauge size (15 gauge) 44% smaller than the 12mm x 2mm (11 gauge)
Endorsement 2011:
“For many years microchips have been the most reliable and efficient method of identifying valuable pet animals. Working as I do with avian (bird) patients, I have used many hundreds now to implant species from American Bald Eagles and other birds of prey, through Macaws and Cockatoos to smaller parrots like African Greys and Amazons. I have also done large tortoises and lizards. The implantation technique is easy in species of this size, but small though the standard chip is (about the size of a grain of rice), it is still a daunting procedure to consider in smaller birds and reptiles. Working on a bird the size of a cockatiel would be equivalent to inserting a scaffold pole into a human being! I was very pleased, therefore, when the new mini-chip arrived, and I have since used the finer needle that will insert this miniaturised device in a number of valuable pet birds such as Senegal Parrots, Cockatiels, and mutation Grass Parakeets, with no problems experienced either during the process of insertion or post-operatively. I would recommend the use of this new mini-chip whole-heartedly in such smaller animal species, or in fine-skinned animals such as Rex cats or Mexican Hairless Dogs.” Alan K Jones BVetMed MRCVS

Chandlers reach the finals of Builders’ Merchants Awards
Independent builders merchants, Chandlers Building Supplies is celebrating after Business Development Executive Mark Tuppen, has reached the finals of the Builders Merchants Awards for Excellence in the Achiever of the Year category.
Mark’s progression to the final came as a result of his outstanding contribution to Eastbourne’s pioneering Eco Home project, Chandlers Mews, so called because of Chandlers’ integral contribution to the project.
The Eco project is the first of its kind in Eastbourne and consists of five new homes, one detached and two pairs of semi’s. The development site was preoviuosly a set of 14 derelict garages considered a nuisance and an eyesore by neighbouring home owners and Eastbourne council alike.
One of the key aspects of the Eco Homes is that the houses have curved roofs which are covered in an organic green material called Sedum. This gives the impression of a grass roof and the neighboring houses seem to have an outlook over green hills rather than normal red tiles.
There are also two solar panels on each house which serve to assist in the heating of the hot water used in the houses, thus reducing the gas and electricity bills.
Richard Skinner, Chandlers Commercial Director, commented: “Congratulations to Mark for reaching the finals. The Eco homes project was a personal passion of Mark’s and its great to see that not only has his comitment resulted in a fantastic building project but also reaching the finals of these prestigious awards. I wish Mark the best of luck for the finals.”

Big day as the Big Society gets under way in Haywards Heath
Big day as the Big Society gets under way in Haywards Heath
The historic moment when a community centre was handed over by West Sussex County Council to a community group has been captured on video.
The story behind the transfer of The Yews in Haywards Heath can now be viewed on West Sussex County Council’s website.
The film tells the story of how the County Council owned community centre was handed over to a newly-formed Community Partnership, and meets some of the organisers and residents who use the centre. It also offers advice from those behind the Partnership to any other communities who are thinking of doing something similar.
County Council Leader Louise Goldsmith said: “The Yews is the perfect example of the Big Society in action – organisations working together to take over the running of a valuable asset for the community.
“Anyone interested in doing something similar, or wanting to find out more about the Big Society can view the film and other interesting information on the County Council’s Big Society web pages.”
The film can be found online at www.westsussex.gov.uk. Just click on ‘West Sussex videos’ or view the Big Society web pages.
The County Council has set up a ‘Big Society Fund’ to back local community projects. To get a grant, a project would need to meet one of the three big criteria of the Big Society agenda – social action, public service reform, and community empowerment.
If residents or local organisations are interested in the fund, they can contact their local County Councillor, as only Members can make an application. Find out more on the County Council website.

Sussex Chorus
The choir was formed in 1921 as the Ditchling Women’s’ Institute Choir with just a handful of singers meeting in someone’s room. The choir changed its name to the Ditchling Choral Society in 1952 with the addition of men. In 1965 Janet Canetty-Clarke was appointed Musical Director, whose excellent musicianship and boundless enthusiasm developed Ditchling Choral Society into one of the foremost choirs in Sussex with around 140 members.
Neil Jenkins was appointed as Musical Director in 2002. The following year the choir changed its name to Sussex Chorus, reflecting the wider Sussex scene from which its members and audiences are drawn. In 2005 the choir was invited to join the Royal Choral Society in recording a programme of Easter music in Chichester Cathedral for the BBC, to be broadcast on the Easter Sunday. The choir has also performed in Europe with visits to Vienna, Cyprus, Tallinn, Bruges and Berlin.
Over the past ninety years the choir has developed an extensive repertoire of traditional and contemporary music, rising to the challenge of less familiar works. The choir has, over the years, commissioned and given first performances of several choral works including Benedictus and Song of St Francis by Howard Blake, The Garden of Love by Malcolm Archer and most recently, a new Sussex carol, Shepherds Arise by Jonathan Willcocks.
Sussex Chorus has performed with a number of eminent soloists, orchestras and conductors. Soloists include Dame Emma Kirkby, Sir Thomas Allen, James Bowman, Ian Bostridge and Michael George. In January 2010 the choir gave an acclaimed performance of Handel’s ‘Messiah’, conducted by Sir David Willcocks, the choir’s Vice-President, celebrating his 90th birthday.
Sussex Chorus completed its cycle of celebratory concerts with its acclaimed 90th Birthday Gala Concert with a performance of Mendelssohn’s Hymn of Praise and opera choruses and arias in July 2010 at the Brighton Dome with Dame Felicity Lott, the choir’s President, as principle guest soloist, who has performed with the choir on several occasions.
The choir’s busy 2011-2012 season includes an Advent Concert on 3rd December in Hurtspierpoint College Chapel, a “Come and Sing” Messiah on 10 March at St Andrews Church as part of the Burgess Hill Fair Trade Festival, a programme of Russian Music, including 5 Scared Choruses from the Vespers in All Saints Church, Hove on 31st March, and finally, a Concert to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee as part of the Brighton Festival at St Bartholomew’s Church on 26 May. Details of all these concerts and the choir are available on its website www.sussexchorus.org
