Hurstpierpoint’s St Lawrence Fair 700 Anniversary Artwork goes on display

On Saturday 5th November at the Village Centre, Trinity Road, Hurstpierpoint, the Artwork Project Group will be putting on display three scale model submissions in a competition for a commemorative sculpture.

The APG is made up from members of the St Lawrence Fair Committee, Hurst Society, Museum Group, Parish Council and others, and wished to produce a permanent memorial to the origins of the Fair. As 2013 is the 700th anniversary of the granting of the charter, by King Edward II, for the village to hold its annual St. Lawrence Fair, a competition has been launched to find a local artist to produce a piece of art for the village.

Similar events may be repeated in many towns and villages around the country as 1313 was a busy time for the King, who granted many fair charters that year in order to swell his coffers by gaining cash from the taxes raised from the fairs!

During the one month of public consultation, the Artwork Project Group hopes that visitors to the display will complete opinion forms with their comments and leave them with the Parish Council office. The three local artists have made models of their designs and the successful one will be commissioned to produce the final piece to be enjoyed by everyone visiting the Village Garden, perhaps for the next 700 years! A decision will be made by the Artwork Project Group in the New Year as to the final choice. Further information is available from the Group 01273 833264.

Big Book Sale

WHAT: Family Support Work’s Big Book Sale
WHERE: All Saints Church, Hove, East Sussex BN3 3QE
WHEN: Friday 18th – Sunday 20th November.
TIMES from 10am-4pm Friday & Saturday and from 1pm-4pm on Sunday
ADMISSION: Entry is free. Refreshments will be on sale throughout the three days.

ABOUT THE BIG BOOK SALE
There will be, literally, thousands of titles to choose from at the Big Book Sale with prices starting from 50p. Local authors Julie Burchill and Peter James have also shown their support to FSW by kindly donating signed copies of their books, which will be available to buy at the sale. You’ll also find a wealth of orange-and-cream Penguin paperbacks and well-loved collections of fairy tales, as well as specialist titles for train-spotters, cross-stitching enthusiasts and the like.

And there’ll be a chance to hear FSW patron and celebrated Sussex children’s author and poet Giles Paley-Phillips reading his delightful new book The Fearsome Beastie.

There’ll be something for adult book-lovers too, as during the three day event local fiction author Lizzie Enfield will introduce and present extracts from her latest page-turner What You Don’t Know.

Family Support Work (FSW) relies hugely on events like the Big Book Sale to help raise much needed funding. Every penny from every book bought at the sale will be used to help Sussex families facing difficult times to begin a new chapter in their lives by providing them with a short break together. FSW offers weekend or week-long stays to families with children at its friendly, well-equipped Knowles Tooth Children’s Centre in Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex. Last year the centre hosted breaks for 77 families with 103 children, at an average cost of £150 for a week-long stay.

More details about FSW’s work, including future fundraising events and information on how you can get involved, can be found at www.familysupportwork.org.uk.

Enjoy the sparkles in safety this Bonfire Night

Mid Sussex District Council is encouraging residents to visit organised fireworks displays this year because they are the safest way to celebrate the 5 November.

At organised displays, fireworks are handled by trained professionals and are kept at a safe distance from the crowd. They also help to minimise disruption for local residents because everybody is gathered in the same place, often away from built up areas, rather than letting fireworks from the garden next door.

For some young children, older people and vulnerable members of the community, Bonfire Night can be an anxious time. The loud noises and explosions associated with back garden fireworks are closer to neighbouring properties and this can be unsettling, especially for those with pets, so Mid Sussex District Council is encouraging residents to attend an organised display instead and be considerate to others.

With 5 November coming up, bonfire and firework displays will soon be taking place all over the District. Organised firework displays are planned for Cuckfield and Lindfield on Saturday 5 November, as well as many other locations in and around Mid Sussex over the next few weeks.

In these tough economic times, organised displays also offer the best facilities and value for money. Organised displays are often free to attend or require just a small entrance fee, so they can work out far cheaper than buying fireworks for a personal display. Organised displays also produce a spectacular and often carefully choreographed show that would be impossible to create at home without significant financial outlay.

The Council understands that many residents will still want to set off their own fireworks and strongly recommends the advice on the safe handling of fireworks that has been administered by the West Sussex Fire and Rescue service.

When using fireworks at home, residents are reminded to use the Fireworks Safety Code:
  • Keep fireworks in a closed box and only take them out one at a time
  • Follow the instructions on each firework and read them by torchlight – NEVER a naked flame
  • Light at arm’s length, using a taper and stand well back
  • Always supervise children around fireworks and never give sparklers to children under five
  • Keep a bucket of water handy
  • Never go near a firework that has been lit. Even if it hasn’t gone off it can still explode
  • Used fireworks should be collected after the display with care. Douse with water, bury or place in a metal container
  • Keep pets indoors
Sussex Police are also reminding local shops that it is an offence to sell fireworks to anyone under the age of 18 and that it is illegal for any person to throw, cast or fire any firework into any highway, street, thoroughfare or public place.

“The safest way to enjoy Bonfire Night is always to attend one of the big organised events,” said Councillor Christopher Snowling, Cabinet Member for Health and Community. “The shows can be spectacular and all the fireworks are handled by trained professionals.

“For those who choose to let off their own fireworks at home, it is important to remember that all fireworks are potentially very dangerous, if not handled properly. I hope that, by following the simple safety tips provided by West Sussex Fire and Rescue service, everybody will have a safe and enjoyable time this 5 November."

Denziloe: Luxe hair in Lindfield

by Nicola Hobbs

Celebrating the second anniversary of the luxury hair salon Denziloe, Sonia and Maria Grover have brought fashion, glamour and class to Sussex.

The Georgian exterior of Denziloe Hair Designers hides a magnificently contemporary interior, chic enough to rival the most ‘in vogue’ of city salons. In the two years since opening, the mother-daughter duo has evolved Denziloe while preserving its nostalgic essence as a tribute to the family history of the business. Joan Denziloe opened the hair salon in Lindfield High Street in November 1964, In November 2009 Maria, Joan’s granddaughter and Salon Manager, reopened Denziloe and has revived its grand reputation. As a young businesswoman and creative stylist, Maria has done an amazing job of growing Denziloe and helping to attract new people to the area.

Victoria Harbinson has recently joined the team. With eight years’ experience in hairdressing, including working on London catwalks and photo shoots, Victoria’s specialism in colouring and bridal hair is sure to enhance the on-trend cuts and styles available at Denziloe. “It’s great to grow the team because it encourages creativity,” says Maria. “We are all young, imaginative professionals and do regular training in London to ensure we are up to date with the latest fashions. We want people to realise that they don’t have to travel out of Sussex to get great hair styles.”

Whether you are male or female, younger or more mature, the team works with each client to create a hairstyle to suit your face shape, hair type and lifestyle. “Your hair is an important part of your personality and a statement about yourself. Whether you want a complete restyle or for us to trim and revitalise a classic cut, we carry out personalised consultations to make sure you will be happy with your look,” says Maria.

Denziloe uses the Sebastian range in their treatments – internationally acclaimed professional products renowned for their designer ‘cocktails’: mixtures of products such as Volume Punch, Sculpting Shot and Beach Bomb.

New to Denziloe this year is KeraStraight, an evolution in straightening and repair which puts an end to dull, frizzy and unmanageable hair. KeraStraight lasts up to four months and is not like chemical straightening, making it safe to use on coloured and permed hair, and even during pregnancy and breast feeding. “We’ve had such positive feedback from customers who’ve had KeraStraight and been so impressed they’ve come back again and again for it,” says Maria.

Denziloe have also introduced Gift Vouchers and Sebastian Gift Sets which make the perfect Christmas present for fashionistas, whatever their age. “We’re looking forward to our next year of business,” says Sonia. With new stylists, new products, and new services, this is a very exciting time for the salon.

Denziloe will be hosting a sociable mince pie and mulled wine filled open evening on Lindfield Christmas Festival Night on Tuesday 6th December, where you can have a look around and experience the glamour of the salon for yourself.

Discover Racing Day – Thursday 27 October

Yesterday’s Discover Racing day at Lingfield Park was a true success and enjoyed by all who attended. Whether they were new to racing or experienced punters, throughout the day there were plenty of opportunities to learn new things about the sport of racing and Thoroughbred horses in particular.

A major draw for many was the Discover Racing tour, in the company of an ex-jockey who took participants to areas not normally available to the public, explaining what happens behind closed doors. The tour also took in how a horse is saddled and how a farrier prepares its feet for racing, by demonstrating the difference between racing horseshoes and normal shoes.
Lingfield Equine Vets allowed visitors to listen to a horse’s heart beat and discover how it changed from rest to exercise. They also helped put the achievements of these athletes into perspective with key facts and hands-on displays.

Hands and heels champion Lucy Barry gave a great display of race riding on the Equiciser – a mechanical horse that simulates riding with very short stirrups, before being presented with her trophy for winning the 2011 series.

The highlight of the demonstrations were the three fascinating sessions with ‘horse whisperer’

Gary Witheford. His demonstrations with both his gelding Arnie and a young filly were truly awe inspiring. His first demonstration of the day, which touched on the use of the whip in racing from the horses’ point of view, created interest as it went live on AtTheRaces TV. Gary’s final demonstration with Silvester Kirk’s fiery filly by Choisor was captivating. His ability to introduce a green, young horse to carrying a jockey in such a short amount of time, in a busy and noisy environment was exceptional. We would like to thank Gary and his team for such a wonderful insight into his work.

Lingfield Park Managing Director Paul Shrimpton commented, “It was a highly successful and enjoyable day for everyone - thank you to those who joined us. Our various displays, demonstrations and presentations were an asset to the day, creating both entertaining and educational aspects, as well as an addition to an outstanding day of racing. We look forward to being able to hold the event again in 2012 and introducing more new people to this wonderful sport.”

Our next race meeting will be on Tuesday 8th November with the Bob Champion Cancer Trust Day. We will begin our National Hunt season with a day supporting one of the biggest names in our sport. The story of Bob Champion and Aldaniti's fairytale win in the 1981 Grand National has been the inspiration for so many cancer sufferers and their families. The Trust continues to fight this disease with its research programmes within the Bob Champion Research Laboratories.

Gates open at 11.10am. First race at 1.10pm. Come and join us as we kick of our National Hunt season.

Latest News

ePetition - Please sign and share this. We’ve launched an ePetition calling on the Department of Health to ensure that every woman is routinely given accurate information about group B Streptococcus (group B Strep or GBS) during antenatal care; every low-risk woman is offered a sensitive test for GBS, ideally at 35-37 weeks of pregnancy; and every higher-risk woman is offered antibiotics in labour. GBS is the UK’s most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborn babies. This would prevent most group B Strep infections in newborn babies, and significantly more than are currently being prevented in the UK. Please sign the epetition - it’s athttp://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/4854 or you can get to it via http://www.gbss.org.uk/epetition and share it as widely as possible – would you email it to your colleagues at work and ask them to pass it onto their friends, facebook/ twitter the link to your friends/followers and ask them to sign and share it too, and perhaps even add a link to the bottom of your emails. If the petition gets 100,000 signatures, then the issue should be debated in the House of Commons and that can only be good.

Christmas Draw & Card/Gifts Catalogue 2011/2 - We have sent out 2011 raffle tickets and Christmas 2011 gift catalogues to everyone – if yours hasn’t landed on your doormat and you’d like it to, please email us (please include your current postal address) and we’ll get it in the post to you right away. If you would like extra raffle tickets please let us know how many books you would like and we can send them out to you. In addition to the top three cash prizes we have some wonderful goodies to be won including, vouchers from The Boutique Cupcake Co, Graze and The Hire Shop, A paintballing day for 4 people, Top quality perfume gift sets and a luxurious Cheese selection or voucher from the Cheese Shed. You can also order the cards, t-shirts, ribbons, etc. via our secure online shop at http://www.gbss.org.uk/shop or download the catalogue on that page too.

Awareness Raising

Your Member of Parliament - MPs have asked some excellent questions about group B Strep prevention – if you haven’t already, please ask your MP to help. For some ideas (including how to find out who your MP is and a draft letter plus background information, along with the recent questions), visithttp://www.gbss.org.uk/MP where you’ll also find out what happened when supporter Justine Baker met Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg.

FREE eCards – please tell your pregnant friends about group B Strep We’ve created some gorgeous eCards for you to use FREE OF CHARGE and, of course, it’s a great way of raising awareness of GBS along the way. They are at http://www.gbss.org.uk/ecard.php (thanks to Helen Graham, Alex McCulloch, Celia Sykes, and others for generously contributing their fabulous pictures). There are three designs specifically aimed at pregnant women … let us know what you think and, if you send them, the reaction of the people who receive them. If you have some images you’d like us to use, please send them to us. We’ll add the best J.

Introductory leaflets about GBS We’ve updated all our introductory leaflets about GBS over the last 12 months or so – you can download all of them (without charge) fromhttp://www.gbss.org.uk/downloads.

Would you like to tell your story? Can you tell your GBS story in around 200 words and send it, with a photo, to us? We’d like to include some stories and photos in a range of places – on our website, in our printed newsletter and in funding applications. If you can say how GBSS has helped you (if we have, of course), that would be great too. It is a powerful way of raising awareness of group B Strep and supporting our work. To help, please email Jane at jplumb@gbss.org.uk. We won’t use your story or quote you without your permission.

Medical:

Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists As I write, we are still awaiting the updated RCOG’s guidelines for preventing early-onset GBS infection in babies. They were due to be published in the summer but, following a consultation process, are reviewing more recent research before producing the final version of their updated guidelines. The latest we’ve heard is they should be published in March 2012 - we’ll let you know!

Northern Ireland – Group B Strep Support had the privilege of presenting evidence to the Northern Ireland Assembly on 14 September 2011 (transcripts athttp://www.niassembly.gov.uk/record/committees2011/hansard_health.htm). The campaign in NI has been spearheaded by families affected by group B Strep, especially Jillian & Andy Boyd, Sarah & Mark Cowan, Sinead McClafferty and Susan Kyle. Huge thanks to all involved – it will make a difference. There’s been a running commentary of this on our facebook page, and there’ll be more about this in our next printed newsletter, which will be sent out to all of the charity’s members in the New Year. (If you’d like to join the charity to ensure you receive the next printed newsletter, please do so online via the shop http://www.gbss.org.uk/shop).

That’s all for now – we’ll be in touch again in the next couple of months. With best wishes from all of us at GBSS and thank you so much for your support. We simply couldn’t do what we do without you.

Launch of The Implant Centre's new flagship practice in Hove

The Implant Centre team launched their new flagship surgery in Brighton & Hove recently with a celebratory evening of champagne, dinner and surprise shenanigans. Over 280 guests attended the official opening of the state-ofthe-art dental implant practice on Hove’s prestigious Palmeira Square.

Local dental teams and other colleagues toured the recently renovated practice, sipped cocktails in the grand reception and took part in impromptu entertainment. The vast basement of the building on Holland Road became the stage for some exciting and nerve wracking immersive promenade theatre with guests becoming participants in an eerie murder mystery staged by the 368 Theatre Company.

250 Years of Hospice Service!

Long-serving staff at St Peter & St James Hospice and Continuing Care Centre will be honoured with the presentation of long service awards by the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, Mr Peter Field, at a ceremony to be held at the Hospice on Wednesday November 9th 2011.

The 14 members of staff have, between them, worked at the Hospice for over 250 years in a variety of roles, including nurses, Health Care Assistants, Physiotherapists, a Kitchen Assistant and a Welfare Officer. Margaret Scully, Day Hospice Sister, is currently the longest serving member of staff, having joined the hospice in February 1988. She said, “It has been exciting and rewarding to see the hospice grow and evolve over the last 23 years to meet the needs of our patients. Our greatest strength is the team at St Peter & St James. Everyone works to the best of their ability to deliver a great service to our patients and their families and I am very proud to be part of that team.”

Colin Burgess, Chief Executive, said, “This is a wonderful opportunity to recognise and acknowledge the commitment and dedication of this group of staff who, together with the rest of our teams of staff and volunteers, work tirelessly to ensure that our patients and their relatives receive the best quality of care at the time that they need it most. Over many years, countless patients have benefited from the vast breadth and depth of experience gained and shared by this valued group of staff.”

To mark the event, each member of staff will receive a small gift and will be able to reminisce with their colleagues about days gone by whilst enjoying a slice of a celebration cake baked by the Hospice’s catering department.

Chairman of the Trustees, Peter Boyse, commented on the occasion saying, “In a world where it is becoming increasingly common for people to move frequently between employers I am proud to celebrate that fact that all of these 14 staff have worked for the organisation for over 10 years and half of them for over 20 years. Their loyalty is not just to St Peter & St James but also to the patients to whom they provide their expert care and attention and I express my sincere thanks to each of them on behalf of the community.”

Dignity with fun for Alpha Care Homes residents

A care home in Balcombe celebrated the dignity of its residents by holding a week-long round of special activities last week.

Russettings Care Home, in Mill Lane, held its own Dignity in Care week from October 17-21.

The event was arranged by Alpha Care Homes, which owns 12 homes across the West Midlands and West Sussex, including Russettings.

Bosses at the group arranged the week-long celebration to show that in addition to specialist tailored care, dignity is an integral part of the service provided to residents at all of Alpha’s homes.

A purple day was held on Monday October 17, when staff and residents were encouraged to wear something purple and the homes were be decked out with purple balloons and decorations.

On Tuesday, residents were spoiled rotten when they took part in a special pamper day.

And all residents were encouraged to make a wish on Wednesday to attach to a ‘wish tree’. Staff also joined in by making a wish for their residents to attach to the tree. Some of the wishes will now be chosen at random and staff will do their best to make them come true.

A purple coffee morning took place on Thursday with lots of delicious purple food and drinks, including blackcurrant juice, blackberry cheesecakes and purple iced cakes which residents and their families and visitors enjoyed.

And the dignity week was rounded off on Friday with simultaneous balloon release and tea party.

Purple Teletubby Tinky Winky even put in a special appearance as part of the celebrations.

And during the week, Russettings residents were visited by pupils from Balcombe Primary School, who interviewed them about their childhood as part of a project. The pupils discovered what playground games the residents used to play, what their school days were like and which subjects were their favourites.

Care home activities coordinator, Margaret Pickering, said: “Dignity is a fundamental part of the service we provide, so we decided to arrange a week-long celebration for all our homes to take part in.

“We tried to make the week as fun and interesting as possible for our residents, to remind them that their dignity is of the highest importance to us, and to show them that we value them as individuals.

“The week was a lot of fun and everyone really enjoyed taking part. The residents who were interviewed by the primary school pupils also enjoyed reliving their childhood memories. ”

MYFANWY TOWNSEND MELANOMA RESEARCH FUND

Dear all

A new drug, Yervoy (Ipilimumab) has been shown to be an effective treatment for patients with advanced melanoma.

However NICE (the National Institute for Clinical Excellence), which sanctions all drugs used within the NHS, has provisionally recommended denying this to patients within England and Wales.

In other words, it wouldn't be prescribed to NHS patients (although I guess it could be obtained privately at vast expense, as it has been licensed for use) NICE themselves, however, agree that Ipilimumab is the only therapy to increase the 1 year survival rate, and that it is the first drug licensed for the treatment for advanced melanoma since the 1970s, and that it represents a steep change in the treatment for advanced melanoma.

The recommendation appears to be denied on the basis that the treatment is not 'cost effective'. We have a chance of getting them to overturn this decision at their meeting on November 16th if they receive a sufficient number of letters of protest by NOVEMBER 4th I've attached a guidance sheet: there are a number of points to consider but one of the most important is the emotive aspect: HOW MUCH IS A LIFE WORTH?

If you feel that you would like to comment to NICE, please go to http://guidance.nice.org.uk/TA/WaveCRS2/48/Consultation/DraftGuidance

Perhaps you would let me know, out of interest, when/if YOU have e-mailed NICE?

Very best wishes
Harry Townsend

NICE GUIDANCE SHEET

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) provisionally recommended, on October 14th, that the use of the drug Yervoy (Ipilimumab) should be denied to patients in England and Wales.
This is extremely disappointing, as it will deny the long-awaited arrival of a new and effective treatment option for patients with advanced melanoma.
It could mean that patients will have few treatment options beyond the standard chemotherapy that was first licensed in the 1970s
Unless this proposal is overturned (and we have until November 4th to submit our comments) it will be a devastating blow to patients with advanced melanoma.
NICE will meet on November 16th to consider any responses: we need to reply quickly and in such numbers that they might reconsider and rethink their proposal

We’re suggesting that, as every voice counts, as many people as possible should respond by November 4th
If you want to find out all about this, the link to their website is as follows:

This shows you also how to make a response: you make your comments under the heading ‘1) Appraisal Committee’s preliminary recommendations’ and have to be sure to fill out the box at the top of the page ‘click here to identify yourself’.
NICE require this information as they need to know if you are a health professional, carer etc.

In your response, and in your own words, we hope you’ll make any or all of the following points:
1)    that you disagree with the provisional ACD (Appraisal Consultation Document)
2)    that this drug is the first drug licensed since the 1970s for the treatment for advanced melanoma and NICE themselves have acknowledged that this is a steep change in the treatment for advanced melanoma
3)    that this drug addresses an unmet need. There will be a huge impact on patients if this drug is rejected by NICE. For example, this is the only therapy that has been shown to increase the 1 year survival rate compared to it’s comparator in a Phase 3 clinical trial
4)    that the incidence of melanoma is increasing. Over the last 25 years, the rate of malignant melanoma in the UK has risen faster than any other of the top 10 cancers in the UK. It is the second most common cancer in the 15-34 age group. More than 11,700 people in the UK are diagnosed with malignant melanoma each year
5)    please also add your own views as a professional/individual/carer (whichever applies in your case) and why and how this decision will affect you and/or the people for whom you care
6)    Personal viewpoint: basically, to NICE, ipilimumab is not ‘cost effective’! It seems to come down to ‘cost’: how much is a further year of life worth? What would they think in such a situation?

It’s hard going wading through the Draft Guidance: but it’s summarised quite neatly in the above report in 4.13 and the following Summary of Appraisal Committee’s key conclusions, and also in 4.11 and 4.12

Elvis Costello Reinvents The Wheel! 2012 ‘Revolver’ Spring UK tour

Elvis Costello will bring the Spectacular Spinning Songbook to the U.K. and Ireland in May of 2012, performing at The Brighton Centre on Wednesday 16th May 2012.

An overture of five uninterrupted rock and roll tunes announces Elvis Costello and the Imposters to the stage, after which members of the audience are invited to spin the gigantic vaudevillian contraption and select the next song.

Fortune may deliver such hits such as “Oliver’s Army”, “Everyday I Write The Book” and “Watching The Detectives” or land on a “Jackpot” selection such as “Time” and “Girl”, demanding a sequence of songs, each containing these words.

Such career highlights as “Shipbuilding” or “God Give Me Strength” can spin into view alongside hidden gems from the Costello songbook like, “Town Cryer” or tunes by The Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash and, of course, Bob Dylan’s “This Wheel’s On Fire”.

Bolder participants may shake a tailfeather in the Hostage-To-Fortune Go-Go Cage, while the more reserved take a seat in the Society Lounge.

“The Revolver Tour” arrives following an acclaimed run U.S. dates during the Spring and Summer of 2011. The tour was extended three times, due to popular demand, drawing over 10,000 attendees in New York City alone and received rave notices from coast to coast.

Rolling Stone said the show combined, “the kitsch of a game show and lounge act:....when he wasn't singing or slamming at his guitars, Costello worked the stage like a burlesque-club emcee, cracking wise at a mile a minute and spinning a dandy's walking stick.”

Under a by-line, “Singer jams hits, rarities and covers in epic two-and-a-half-hour long show”, another Rolling Stone reported that, “Costello switched from a Fender to a gold Les Paul, howling away and wailing on piercing wah-wah notes. He rocked out even harder to "Uncomplicated," feeding off the energy of a female dancer in the go-go cage shaking maracas.”

The New York Times opined that there was, “no way to keep Mr. Costello’s songs in any shallow entertainment mode. His torrents of words hold desire, rage, wounds and revenge.”

The Los Angeles Times described the show as “the kind of uniquely invigorating experience that warrants a buzzword all of its own; inspiring.”

This acclaim was echoed in review after review:

“Given the gig’s by-pant-seat, chimerical format, Costello’s consummate ability to entertain, his like-wine-aged croon and the band’s master musicianship in meeting him at every step, this was by far one of the most engaging and outright fun shows…” – Nashville Scene

"Unfettered, free-wheeling fun" – Minneapolis Star-Tribune

"The Wheel was the perfect way to shake up a set list with a couple decades' worth of excellent material" – Columbus Dispatch

"Three hours of hilarity, musicality, and unabated joy" – St. Louis Post-Dispatch

"It's hard to imagine any other musician in the world playing the show that Elvis Costello did" – Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

“Elvis Costello has the goods to entertain without relying on props, stunts or tricks.
But when he does employ them, it actually turns out to be that much better.” – Oakland Free Press

SDBS Southdown Bodyshop: The panel game

by Roger Linn

There are some businesses for whom snow and ice are welcome. Watch the
car skating championships at Hassocks crossroads on any day when there’s ice on the ground and you’ll see what I mean.

Gary Cragg and Geoff Burse run their car body repair business SDBS Southdown Bodyshop from Mid Sussex Business Park on Ditchling Common and they’re busy people. But then, with the winter we’ve had, you’d expect them to be, even though Gary says that he feels a bit uncomfortable benefitting from his customers’ misfortunes.

I don’t see why he should be. I’m always glad when I find someone who delivers high quality work and who cares about keeping my business.

A conversation with Gary, over a mug of tea in the cosy little cafe on the Estate, told me a lot about his passion for customer care and it revealed why he and his partner with their team have such a good reputation with both private customers and the trade. They’ve been in business now for some 15 years and grown steadily if unspectacularly throughout that time – a fact which says a great deal about a small company in a very competitive industry. “Word of mouth,” says Gary, “that’s what we rely on. Our customers feel very strongly about their cars so when they see how much care we take, they tell their friends. And people know that they can come round and get free advice, free estimates and sometimes even a free cup of tea.”

“Thanks very much,” I said, “one sugar please.”

Gary grinned and went on, “a lot of our bread and butter work is for big garages of course, and they don’t put important jobs out to firms who’ll let them down.” I am sure they don’t. However, I confessed that I thought most of the car body repair industry was now controlled by the big insurers, only to learn from Gary that, depending on the individual policy, an insured person doesn’t necessarily have to use the repairers suggested by the insurance company. “You simply tell them you’re coming to us. We take a photograph of the damage and email it with our repair assessment to the insurer. They email us back with permission to go ahead and that’s it. Painless!”

Another assumption of mine was that virtually all bodywork repairs these days were effected by simply replacing the relevant panel, wing, bumper or whatever. Here, Gary corrected me too. “It’s true that sometimes that is the most effective way, but too many firms just do this automatically without seeing if the damage is repairable. We have the craftsmanship and repairing skills in-house and we always try to use them where it’s possible. Why would you want to have major changes made to the vehicle when a simple repair would suffice?”

It was a good question and one that all the Classic Car owners – and there are many – who trust Gary and his team with their bodywork repairs would be better able to answer than me.

Hammerwood Park: Concert by the God of the piano

Dear Friends

As usual, only half a dozen people have indicated that they're coming on Sunday . . . And Morski really is the God of Gods of the piano. It's a great privilege to welcome him to England . . . and not only does he deserve a good audience . . . but it's a most terrible waste of talents if people don't take advantage of being able to hear him .

By the way, three more videos of a recent concert which we hope you'll enjoy even if you live too far away to have been able to come:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJF4fTdu2bU Ravel
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Q2vBFketUg Chopin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urDxcJIYj9I Rachmaninoff

We try to encourage artists to allow videos of concerts for YouTube and it's a great effort to make them . . . so we do hope that you enjoy them even if you can't enjoy concerts in the flesh.

Whether Mowski will allow a video I don't know . . . so if in doubt, it's best to come rather than rely on a video which might not appear .

Best wishes
David Pinnegar

Kazimierz Morski was born in Poland in 1939. In 1957 he completed his study in piano at the conservatory of Katowice. Seven years later he obtained an advanced degree in piano and organ from the superior music school of Warsaw. During this period he went to Japan and Russia for several tourneys. His meetings with Neuhaus (Warsaw) and Benedetti Michelangeli (Arezzo) were of great importance. In 1971 he also graduated in theory, composition and orchestra conducting in the same
institution of Katowice. He took part in a number of well-known international competitions (Warsaw, Munich, Wien, Katowice) and toured the USSR, Africa and Europe. For more than seven years he was the Polish Philharmonic orchestra's music director and he worked with the world’s most famous musicians including Czerny-Stefanska, Richter, Ax and Kremer. His activity has been intense in Poland and Italy as both pianist and conductor: 5 Concertos by Beethoven, 2 by Chopin, Grieg, 2
by Liszt, Rachmaninov (III) and Prokofiev (III). He has worked with the Orchestra of Warsaw and Cracovia, Philharmonic Orchestra of Katowice, Musicverein in Wien, Scarlatti Orchestra in Naples,

In 1982 Kazimierz Morski conducted the orchestra of Lanciano-Festival for Pope John Paul II in Castel Gandolfo (Rom): (Chopin, Concert f minor and Beethoven, V Symphony). In 1994 he was nominated Professor in University of Katowice (Poland) and visiting Professor at the University of Madrid and Rome II. He is an authority on musical interpretation. He has recorded CDs and for
the radio -TV both in Poland, in Italy and abroad: (at dezember 2010: in Italian Tv (RAI II and III): Chopin. He taught both international concert pianist Adolfo Barabino and Michel d’Ambrosio, professor of piano studies at Potenza University.

Hammerwood concerts are unique on account of presenting classical music on an instrument tuned to a Good Temperament, a type of tuning which Bach intended to be used for the performance of his 48 for the Well Tempered Clavier. For the past hundred and twenty years at least, instruments have been tuned with all notes equally spaced, in an every increasing move towards achieving international standards and eliminating all variations. The change of character upon change of musical key-sign has been lost and is to be heard once again on the instruments at Hammerwood Park

Hurstpierpoint Prep School raises a tea-tastic £3250 for Cancer Charity

Around 1500 coffee mornings were held throughout Sussex at the end of September as part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. UK-wide the charity are hopeful they have hit their fundraising target of £8.5m, with £246,000 estimated to be been raised in Sussex alone.

One coffee morning that has helped with raising funds for essentials services for people fighting cancer was held at Hurstpierpoint Prep School who raised a fantastic £3250, this year increasing last year’s figure by £1544. A cheque presentation was held last week at the school.

Gail Ciecierska and Annie Carr, both parents with children at Hurst Prep School, organised a coffee morning at the school with homemade cakes, games, sealed bids using donation s from local businesses. The students joined in by wearing green for a day and donned colourful wigs and funny hats and took to shaking their buckets for a money collection at the gates.

Gail comments, “We were overjoyed at the amount raised and would like to thank everyone who got involved. We are especially grateful to Hurst College for allowing us to host the event at the school and also to all those who helped raise such a brilliant amount in just two hours. Local businesses throughout the area were so supportive, and we were bowled over by their generosity. Macmillan seems to have a very special plan in people’s hearts.”

Rachel David, Macmillan’s fundraising manager in Sussex said, “The school’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning was a fantastic success. I would like to thank the students, Heather Beeby the Headmistress of Hurst Prep, Gail and Annie for all their hard work.

“We rely almost entirely on donations, and without all the hard work from our coffee morning hosts and goodwill from those who go along to their events, we wouldn’t be able to keep offering the fantastic services that so many people rely on.”

The money raised will be used to fund Macmillan’s vital cancer services including specialist nurses, a nurse-run support line and financial advice and support for cancer patients.

As such, he is in demand not only to assist with ‘difficult horses’ but also to introduce young race horses to their racing career. He’ll be here to show you how a young horse learns to wear a saddle and carry a jockey.

Additionally there’ll be an opportunity to watch how a farrier puts shoes on a horse and listen to talks from industry experts including a vet and a trainer on what to look for in a race horse.

Hickstead set for 2012 season

Next year’s Longines Royal International Horse Show has been brought forward a week due to the London Olympic Games. The CSIO 5* will run from 17-22 July 2012 to avoid a clash with the Olympics, which run from 27 July to 12 August.

The Longines Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead will feature top class showing and showjumping action, including the Longines King George V Gold Cup and the FEI Nations Cup of Great Britain™.

“With the FEI Nations Cup series nearing its conclusion at Hickstead, there will be much to play for and we expect competition to be as fierce as ever,” says Hickstead director Lizzie Bunn.

The course designer for Hickstead is Bob Ellis, who will also design the Olympic course at Greenwich.

“We hope some of the top international riders will compete at Hickstead on their non-Olympic rides, as they will have the opportunity to jump round Bob Ellis’ tracks just before the Games,” adds Lizzie.

The British Jumping Derby Meeting will retain its usual spot and will run from 20-24 June, while the All England Jumping Championships will be held from the 6-9 September, following a successful first year for Hickstead’s new national show.

The Hurstpierpoint College National Schools and Pony Club Jumping Championships have also been brought forward a week to 27 July 2012.

Fashion Show for St Peter & St James Hospice

A collection of sophisticated chic clothes will be modelled at the Lewes Con Club by a group of gorgeous girls, on November 16th 2011.

Produced by noted national events organiser Travelling Trends, this fashion show is being held to support the essential work carried out by St Peter and St James Hospice.

The fashion show is being presented by the friends of Jane Goodall, who was an ardent supporter of the Hospice, but who sadly succumbed to cancer earlier this year.

Each of the ten lovely ladies modelling the clothes were all pals of Jane’s and are enthusiastically preparing for the event in her memory.

Organiser Sarah Clowes says “The girls are already in rehearsal for the big event with lots of laughter and giggling taking place as they learn to change their clothes quickly and get the hang of taking to the catwalk. We do have professional advisors on hand and on the night the show will be brilliant; an event of which Jane would be proud.”

Jane was well known in Lewes as a kindly lady, full of good humour, who dedicated her life to teaching deprived children in a poor area of London. For almost thirty years, she travelled each day on the train to school, once famously appearing on John Peel’s BBC Breakfast show as a member of the Lewes early commuter’s club, ‘The Red Eye Brigade’.

It was because of her appreciation of the care given to her during her illness that Jane was an enthusiastic supporter of the work the hospice does in caring for sick people.

So her friends in Lewes have launched the fashion show, as a memorial to Jane, while providing practical support to the Hospice.

There will be trendy togs for females on sale at the show, selling at rock bottom prices.

Sarah adds “This is an event not to be missed. Good value, good fun and a good cause.”

And four lucky people will be going to France after the show. One of the raffle prizes is free accommodation for a fortnight’s break in the Lot Valley region for a quartet of friends.

The fashion show kicks off at 7.00pm on Wednesday November 16 at Lewes Con Club. Tickets are £5.00 with a free glass of wine and are available at Sage, The Old Needlemakers and Castle Hair Stylists.

Double Celebration at The Mewes Vets, Haywards Heath

The Mewes Veterinary Clinic have had a double celebration this week, with two of their staff gaining additional qualifications.

Their Principal, Julia Mewes, has just been awarded the 'General Practitioner Certificate in Small Animal Medicine'. This represents a higher tier of qualification for veterinary surgeons in General Practice and is the second such Certificate that Julia has achieved in her career, her other is in Radiography. Studying involved attendance at multiple lectures spread over a two year period, followed by the publication of two case reports and then two examinations, which Julia has just completed and passed.

Julia established The Mewes Veterinary Clinic 15 years ago and studied for this qualification whilst working full time, running the business and raising a family! She said "I needed to be sure that I was still offering the very best service and decision making processes for my patients after being qualified for 20 years, and I also enjoyed the immense intellectual challenge of keeping up with the much more recently qualified veterinary surgeons on the course - proving there is life in the old dog yet!"

Veterinary nurse, Kate Howlett, was recently forced to take time off from the Clinic to have complicated knee surgery. She used this time, however, to complete and successful gain her NVQ level 3 in Feline Friendly Nursing.

This challenging course included hospitalisation, common diseases, the development of the domestic cat from the wild cat, behavioural problems and care of cats in the veterinary surgery. The course concentrated on client care with their feline pets and the steps to take to help owners with their cat’s behavioural problems; from urinating in the house, introducing new cats into the household and aggressive behaviour. Also guides for picking the perfect cat for the family, treating diseases and the best support for cat owners.

Kate said "I have thoroughly enjoyed this course, as I have a huge interest in feline behaviour and aim to give the best possible care for each individual cat. I hope to develop my new skills and pass on the knowledge I have learnt to all members of staff to ensure that each cat that comes into the clinic is comfortable and purring!"

All the staff, clients and patients send their congratulations to Julia and Kate for their tremendous achievements.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service News

FIREFIGHTERS ISSUE CHIMNEY WARNING AS TEMPERATURES DROP

With the Indian summer now firmly behind us and darker colder nights drawing in, many people may be turning to the warmth of an open fire for the first time this season. Firefighters are urging people to ensure their chimney is ready for the winter months ahead.

Although open fires and wood burning stoves are a comforting way to keep the winter chill at bay they can become a serious safety hazard if simple precautions are not followed. West Sussex firefighters were called to extinguish over 214 chimney fires last year (1st April 2010 - 31st March 2011) with some properties left uninhabitable as a result.

Community Fire Safety Officer, Jackie Boyle, explains:

"The weather has turned considerably colder and we know people are turning to open fires - just last night our crews were called to two separate chimney fires. Thankfully, both were contained quickly, but they can be devastating. The best piece of advice we can give to anyone planning to light a fire is to make sure they get their chimney checked and swept.

"If you can, inspect your chimney breast, particularly in the roof space. Make sure that it is sound and that the sparks or fumes cannot escape through cracks or broken bricks. Of course, you should also make sure you have a working smoke alarm on each level of your home - early detection saves lives."

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service offers the following advice:

- Have your chimney swept at least once a year, twice a year if burning wood.
- When burning wood, use dry, seasoned woods only.
- Build smaller, hotter fires that burn completely and produce less smoke.
- Never burn cardboard boxes or waste paper.
- Never use petrol or paraffin to light your fire.
- Do not overload the grate or appliance.
- Use a fire or spark guard to prevent accidental fires.
- Ensure the fire is fully extinguished before going to bed or leaving the house.
- Make sure wood burners and other fire appliances are installed and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

To find your local chimney sweep, contact the National Association of Chimney Sweeps on freephone 0800 833464 or www.nacs.org.uk
