Local talent shines on the mic
Bryony Rushton from Chelwood Gate has been given the big thumbs up by judges at the Open Mic UK auditions. Along with other impressive acts, Bryony has made it through to the Regional Finals and will now be performing at the live showcases of Open Mic UK 2011.
Open Mic UK 2011 is the exciting national talent competition which searches for the UKs best singers, singer/songwriters, rappers and vocalists of all genres who perform either covers or original material.
One contestant who has evidently caught the judge’s eye is local talent Bryony Rushton, now competing for a place in the National Final at The O2 in London and the chance to grab a breakthrough recording contract. Thousands of hopefuls entered nationwide and hundreds of auditionees queued patiently on the day for their turn to impress the judges. Those who made it through the audition stage will now take part in a live Regional head to head battle alongside the best talent in their area. They’ll be performing in front of hundreds of audience members and a professional judging panel to win a place at the National Grand Final.
Chris Grayston head of Future Music comments “we are searching for an act whose live performance will impress an audience, industry judges and A&R associates, and who has the potential to become a professional recording artist. The standard was high last year and this year looks set to be even better.”
The competition is divided into age categories; 16 and under, 17-22 and 23 and over; all types of singers, vocal performers, groups and acoustic singer/songwriters are invited to enter Open Mic UK. There’s over £50, 000 in prizes up for grabs this year and the overall winner of Open Mic UK 2011 will be offered a recording contract, with up to £30, 000 investment! They’ll also have the opportunity to tour across the UK.
There are plenty of development opportunities available to acts taking part courtesy of ICMP, who will be offering songwriting courses and masterclasses throughout the competition. The latter stages of the competition will also provide acts with the opportunity to impress many guests from record labels, agencies and the entertainment industry as well as judges from BBC Introducing, national radio and regional press.
The winners will not only get to perform on stage at The 02 at Live Fest, London’s largest indoor festival, but they will be thrust into the media spotlight through television, radio and print media and will be invited on the Open Mic UK Tour, which boasts 100 gigs across the country. Last year’s under 16’s winner, Hatty Keane, has been signed to BGM Music. Since being crowned the overall runner up of the competition last year, Hatty has been featured in a variety of local, regional and national press, performed live sets alongside Tinchy Stryder and Roll Deep and is currently working on new material. Previous winner Birdy has recently been a favourite on Radio 1 having signed to Warner Music and is set for a huge career at just 15 years of age.
For more information go to the website www.openmicuk.co.uk or better still come down and support your local talent performing! You can purchase tickets from the website www.openmicuk.co.uk or on the door subject to availability or from Bryony Rushton at www.bryonybrookeperformances.co.uk.

Upwaltham Barns, Chichester, West Sussex, GU28 0LX

One of the prettiest venues in the south of England, Upwaltham Barns is a set of traditional flint long barns surrounded by the beautiful South Downs. The love and care poured into the restoration of the Barns is reflected in the warm and friendly atmosphere of this family-owned venue.
Upwaltham Barns consists of three interior areas; the East Barn, the South Barn and the Bar. Exposed beams and brickwork in both barns make this venue beautifully rustic and romantic. The East Barn is licensed for civil wedding and partnership ceremonies for up to 150 guests and is equally suitable for a drinks reception. Its original stonework, wooden beams and neutral colour tones create a warm, tranquil atmosphere. Also licensed for civil ceremonies, The South Barn can seat 160 guests for dining and up to 200 for an evening reception. The barn’s wooden beams are entwined with dazzling fairy lights and recesses in the brick walls can be decorated with tea lights, making this spacious barn wonderfully intimate. The adjoining Bar has leather sofas, rugs, and a woodburner for an authentic cosy, country feel.
There are several outdoor areas at Upwaltham Barns. The wonderful cottage gardens have been lovingly maintained and decorated with beautiful flowers. The Courtyard at the heart of the venue is a wonderful place for a drinks reception, canapés, hog roast or barbecue. The Moroccan-style snug area with plumped out cushions and tea lights is a cosy place for guests to retreat to throughout the day.
In addition, the French inspired Jasmine Cottage is available for the wedding couple on the day and night of the wedding. It has been beautifully decorated with gorgeous fabrics and vintage furniture.
Katherine Jenkins is coming to Brighton
Katherine Jenkins, the record-breaking multi platinum selling mezzo-soprano, today announces her UK Daydream theatre tour, starting 7th January 2012 in Oxford. Taking in 21 cities across the UK, Katherine will be performing up close and personal for her first theatre tour in three years and will perform at The Brighton Centre on Friday 10th February 2012.
Coinciding with the release of her latest album, Daydream, released October 10th on Warner Bros Records, the album is her most personal to date drawing together music and songs she loves from across classical, traditional, folk and easy pop that have inspired her over the course of her life.
Recorded in Los Angeles and London in spring this year, Katherine has once again teamed up with John Shanks in the U.S (credits include Take That & Westlife and Katherine’s hit 2010 single Tell Me I’m Not Dreaming), and Simon Franglen in London (credits include Barbra Streisand, Céline Dion and the Oscar nominated soundtrack to James Cameron’s Avatar).
Capturing what audiences love about Katherine – her astonishing vocal range, her championing of great songs, always willing to test new ground – Daydream reflects on the exciting stage that she now has reached in her life and career.
Stand out tracks on the album include the stunning Shanks produced Break It To My Heart, a deeply moving interpretation of the Celtic classic Black Is The Colour, I Dreamed A Dream from Les Misérables rarely performed in French, a brand new composition of Ave Maria and Katherine’s stirring tribute to service men and women through the ages A Flower Tells A Story.
The Daydream tour will also see Katherine perform some of her best-known songs that she has performed and recorded over her last seven albums including tracks from her debut album Premiere through to her best selling album Believe.
Katherine says “I had an amazing time on my first arena tour but Daydream is a very intimate album and I wanted my tour to reflect that. It's a chance for my fans to see me up close and personal in some of the UK's most beautiful theatres”.
As one of the UK’s best-loved artists, with album sales in excess of 5 million copies, her new album, Daydream, reflects her success here and abroad (her last album Believe went platinum in many countries) and signals the start of the next stage of her life.
Tickets go on sale on Friday 2nd September 2011 and are available at www.brightoncentre.co.uk

Ditchling Players - Autumn Production 9th to 12th November
Since the very successful 'The Ditchling Story' in May things have been a bit quiet with the Players, well at least on the surface, behind the scenes we have been sorting out things for our autumn production and I’m pleased to say that, over the last month or two things have come together.
In November we shall be putting on 2 one-act plays, nothing unusual about that you may think, but these are being directed by two of our members who have never directed a play before!! Penelope Bennett & Sarah Trayler with assistance from experienced directors, Nan Crofton & Sonia Stock, respectively, are producing two comedies 'Shop for Charity' by Charles Mander and 'The Virtuous Burglar' by Dario Fo .
Penelope’s play takes place in a small charity shop, set in almost any town in England and is amazingly topical, exploring, as it does the relationships between the staff and their motives for working in the shop. Where is the charitable support at home for these characters as they try to raise funds for the “people in the Third World”?
Sarah’s play is more of a farce being a tale of mistaken identity, thwarted passion and a web of marital intrigue. A burglar is discovered when the owner of the flat returns unexpectedly with his mistress. When the owner's wife arrives, the burglar is forced to pretend that the mistress is his wife. A profusion of spouses and lovers appear and the burglar, apparently the only one not having an affair, is forced into pretending to have multiple wives. Then his own wife arrives!
Rehearsals are well under way and I’m sure that as well as the cast both Penelope & Sarah would be pleased to see as many of you in the audience as possible. The production dates are Wednesday 9th to Saturday 12th November at Ditchling Village Hall with tickets on sale from the 17th October at Clifford Dann, High Street, Ditchling. We look forward to seeing you there.

Helen Yorke playing at Hammerwood Park
Hi!
Inspired by playing at Hammerwood earlier this year, Helen Yorke has asked if she can play another recital at Hammerwood. So 4pm on Sunday 11th September is the day . . . and we hope that you will go out of your way to come. Helen's a great pianist, teaching both at Trinity College of Music and at the Birmingham Conservatoire and from her programme
- 1st Partita of Bach,
- Ravel Sonatine,
- Chopin Ballade Nr 3 and the Scherzo in Bb minor
as well as some Chopin nocturnes and etudes
she's clearly putting the piano to the test . . .
Please bring children - children are free of charge and adults bringing children are half price, and if you're not bringing children £10 and £12 (Members/Non-members)
Why were there riots last month? Because children have not enough to do and are disenfranchised from higher things. So as we provide this special opportunity, we hope that you will take advantage of what we provide.
Furthermore, many people say they cannot come due to distance: if we charged £200 per ticket and required you to dress up - to tell you that it's a special occasion, you'd all flock as to Glyndebourne. But Hammerwood is more special than that and Hammerwood concerts are not merely just another concert competing to be heard in a venal world.
Because of the "Dimensional" tuning that I use on the piano, the audience to this concert will be hearing the music in the spirit within which it was written. Even though Ravel was writing after the period within which such tuning is supposed to have disappeared, the fact that he wrote part of the Sonatine in D flat major instead of C sharp major suggests that he was aware of a difference.
I refer to "Dimensional" tuning as the effect of what my tuning work achieves is to throw some chords into focus and other chords out of focus. Composers wrote deliberately exploiting these effects which we miss now with universal equal tuning. The difference is that of a beautiful professional portrait photograph and a snapshot taken with a box Brownie, simple digital camera or iPhone.
I have just returned from tuning two pianos in Genoa, one a Bechstein formerly belonging to an extraordinary musician and a Steinway at the home of an international recitalist. After tuning, the pianist played an arpeggio and raved that whereas normally the arpeggio comes out as a series of individual notes, the technique I use caused each note to add to the previous note so as to create a crescendo, a feat apparently only equalled by the late Claudio Buitoni of Florence.
So we do hope that you will make special efforts to come both to this concert on 11th September and on 2nd October to hear Neil Crossland play Schubert. Please phone us 01342 850594 to let us know that you are coming.
(We are also looking for a date later in October or early November for Marc Naylor's clarinet quartet . . . )
Best wishes

We are proud to announce our next monthly FREE cooking demo at The Woolpack Pub in Burgess hill ahead of the event this time!
Our very own very own pool of knowledge and experienced with all things fish James Thomas will be leading the exciting and varied event. The focus on next weeks cooking demo will be on our very local and incredibly abundant brown crabs. James and I have had many chats about the beauty of crabs in all aspects including the fact that they multiply quicker than we can eat them! they are all over our shores and the subject of the largest crab fishery in Western Europe, centred around the coasts of the British Isles, with more than 60,000 tonnes caught annually.
Most however, like many of our fish goes straight to France, Italy and Spain!!! Crab is one of the most versatile of foods in the fish world with hundreds of recipes found online and in cooking books. From a crab linguine to a summer salad garnished simply with a dressed crab.. a chili crab stir fry to a crab cake.. you can create any dish from any part of the world with crab!

Recycling residents enjoy improved facilities in Mid Sussex
Community recycling points (also known as ‘bring sites’) have been upgraded and made easier to use for the residents of Mid Sussex to recycle.
New mixed recycling bins at recycling bring sites at Cyprus Road - Burgess Hill, Sainsbury’s in Brooklands Way - East Grinstead and Sainsbury's in Bannister Way - Haywards Heath have been improved. The new facilties now accept plastic bottles and food or drink cans, as well as glass, making it more convenient.
If you have extra recycling that won’t fit in your kerbside bin at home, you can now pop it in the banks when you next visit the shops. The bins have blue lids and are clearly labelled. Paper banks at the bring sites have also been refurbished as part of the work while charity banks at the sites will take your surplus textiles and shoes.
“Residents currently help to recycle 46% of all the waste gathered and we hope that these upgraded recycling points will help to push up these excellent rates even further”, said Councillor Pru Moore, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Sustainability. “We want to encourage people to think even more widely about household items which can be used and recycled, it is amazing what fantastic second lives these items can go on to have!”
For more information on recycling in Mid Sussex visit the District Council website at www.midsussex.gov.uk/recycling or email wastematters@midsussex.gov.uk.

60s Music Evening in Ditchling
60s Music Evening in Ditchling
Saturday October 15, 7.30pm
Ditchling Village Hall
Following the last two years’ sell-out 60s music disco in Ditchling Village Hall, we are repeating the event on October 15 featuring, as before, DJ Andy Young and all those great bands of the 60s decade.
Come and dance to the Rolling Stones, Beatles, Kinks, Supremes, Manfred Mann and all your favourites and help raise money for a wildlife charity (see below) at the same time.
Tickets cost £12 and include light refreshments. A well-stocked bar will be available, but you can bring your own drinks if you prefer. As numbers are strictly limited, it is advisable to book your tickets early to avoid being disappointed, which happened to some people the last two years. Tickets are available from August 1st at Ditchling Post Office and Parkers or by phoning 01273 845361. NO TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE ON THE DOOR.
The charity which will benefit is Fauna & Flora International (reg charity 1011102), backed by Sir David Attenborough. Last year we helped Indonesia’s threatened orang utans; this year we’re donating the proceeds to the very endangered Cross River gorillas of Cameroon.
Make sure you get ‘Satisfaction’ by getting your ticket early – don’t risk turning ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’ by leaving it too late!

GLORIOUS comedy at Chequer Mead, East Grinstead
Associated Actors present The Green Room Theatre Company in Peter Quilter's hilarious comedy "Glorious".
The true story of Florence Foster Jenkins, the eccentric American soprano dubbed "the Diva of Din" and "Disaster on the high C's".
In spite of her imperfect pitch singing opera, she became a hugely popular cult in the 1940's in New York. She sold out at Carnegie Hall (over 3000) in her final concert. Maureen Lipman played this role successfully in the West End, and it is now played by actress Hal Dyer, wife and widow of local actor Michael Robbins.

Hamnet Osborne Tisshaw: Advice on family law matters
Costs of obtaining legal advice on separation or divorce need not be prohibitive!
Understandably, anyone stepping through the door of a solicitor’s office will be nervous about the bill that they may be presented with. However, obtaining good quality legal advice is not as expensive as you may think. The short and long term advantages of getting legal advice can be cost-saving and can certainly help to alleviate stress at a very difficult time.
We wish to be as transparent as possible about our fees and seek to provide advice at very competitive rates. With significant changes anticipated in the legal aid funding system far fewer people will be eligible for assistance and this, especially in the context of the current economic climate, is why we are taking steps to introduce some fixed fees and continue to allow payment by instalments.
We are also introducing fixed fees to provide ad hoc advice at various stages of the proceedings for those wishing to act for themselves. For example, if you prepare your own divorce petition we will check the Court papers before they are sent. Or, if you reach financial agreement, we will draw up a Consent Order.
We have an experienced team of family lawyers including three solicitors and one legal executive. Our fee earners are members of the Family Law Advanced Panel, Children’s Panel and Resolution. We offer expertise in high-level financial settlements, Children Act applications and Care proceedings. We currently undertake uncontested divorces for £450 (£540 incl.VAT) plus Court fees of £385, total £925. This does not include financial advice.
We offer an initial consultation of up to 1 hour for a fee of £50 including VAT. For more information regarding our services and fixed fees, please visit:

Henfield Theatre Company: The School for Scandal

Performances will be on the 20th, 21st and 22nd October 2011 at The Henfield Hall, Henfield, West Sussex, BN5 9DB at 7.45pm and tickets are priced at £8.00 for elevated seating and £6.00 for ground level seating.

Bartholomew Barn, Kirdford, Petworth, West Sussex, RH14 0LN
t: 01403 330049 w: www.bartholomewbarn.co.uk
Bartholomew Barn is a stunningly pretty wedding reception venue situated on the edge of bluebell-carpeted woods and surrounded by open countryside. The Barn is easily reached from Petworth, Midhurst, Billingshurst and Pulborough, yet you will feel like you’re away from it all in this scenic, secluded and peaceful setting.
The barn seats up to 110 guests for dining and 130 guests for an evening reception making it perfect for intimate weddings. A log burner sits at the end of the barn making this space feel cosy in the winter, while tall windows and glazed patio doors ensure the barn is light and airy. Up to 150 guests can be seated for the wedding breakfast with the use of an additional marquee extension.
The charming walled courtyard features a central koi pond, illuminated at night to great effect. This sheltered area has patio furniture, heaters and parasols and an open-sided barn that is often used for a hog roast or barbecue. The gardens beyond are filled with colour all year round, perfect for wedding photos.
A ceremony licence has been applied for and there are a few places locally where couples can hold their civil wedding or partnership ceremony. It is also possible for couples to hold other types of ceremonies that don’t require a licence, e.g Humanist, Pagan, Jewish weddings and blessings.

News from Lancing College
David Hare OL, and the company of ‘South Downs’, photographed at Lancing College.
‘South Downs’ is David Hare’s new one-act play, which will premiere at the Minerva Theatre, Chichester, and will run from 2 September – 8 October. David Hare, one of our most respected playwrights, was a pupil at Lancing College in the 1960s. This play is set in 1962, in a public school on the South Downs; David Hare, the Director, Jeremy Herrin, members of the cast, costume and technical teams have all visited Lancing to research the setting and context.
Jeremy Tomlinson, Registrar at Lancing College, and his colleagues have helped them in their researches, and Jeremy has given them an in-depth tour of the College.
The photograph shows David Hare (centre back row, in a blue shirt), with Anna Chancellor (standing second from the right), next to Nicolas Farrell (far right), who are both starring in the play.

Stephen John Lacey
Stephen John Lacey, loving husband, devoted father, musician, sailor, photographer, blogger and software engineer died suddenly on the 24 July 2011 in a car accident in Kirkland, U.S.A., aged 43.
Stephen moved to Hassocks with his family in 1975 where he attended the local schools and made many friends. Stephen had a passion for music from an early age and played in a band with a group of his school friends. Stephen’s early life was surrounded by the love of his sister, parents and many friends.
Stephen moved to London in 1986 where he attended Imperial College London and earned a Masters degree in software engineering. During his time at University, Stephen’s love of music grew and he performed in a student band.
Stephen originally met his future wife Nabila in 1995 while both were working for RenderMorphics, a London based software company. RenderMorphics was later bought by Microsoft who moved Stephen and a number of his colleagues to the Microsoft Campus in Redmond, Nr. Seattle in the U.S.A. where Stephen worked on the Microsoft flight simulator and X Box. To assist with his work on the flight simulator, Stephen learnt to fly at the nearby Boeing air field and quickly obtained his pilots license. Early in 2006 Stephen moved to Google but later spent some time with Facebook before returning to Google.
It was while both were working at Microsoft in the U.S.A. that Stephen again met up with Nabila and together they returned to England where they married in St. Cosmas & St.Damian Church, Keymer on the 21 July 2001; they recently celebrated their ten year wedding anniversary.
Shortly before moving to the U.S.A. Stephen started sailing and quickly obtained his Masters Certificate. Soon after arriving in the U.S.A. and living beside the Pacific Ocean
it was not long before he was sailing again, this time out of Seattle and Vancouver; his honeymoon was spent sailing around the Greek Islands. Many of Stephen and Nabila’s future holidays were spent sailing in the eastern Mediterranean and off Thailand and Burma; a few years later Stephen, Nabila and friends spent a holiday together sailing around New Zealand. To celebrate his ten year wedding anniversary, Stephen and his family cruised to Alaska from Seattle.
In his short life, Stephen led a life of accomplishment, a passion for learning and a love of technology, music, photography, and sailing. Stephen is survived by his wife Nabila, son Julian, daughter Jasmine (all of Kirkland), mother Janet Lacey, father Michael Lacey, sister Susan Lacey and grandfather John Wickham. Stephen will be sorely missed by his family and many friends worldwide.
A service will be held for Stephen at St. Cosmas & St. Damian Church, Keymer on Friday 26 August at 2.00pm.; all family and friends will be welcome.
Testimonial from Rachel Ricketts
I have been a regular monthly advertiser with Sussex Living magazine since April 2010. One of the key things I look for when selecting a magazine to advertise in is friendly, caring and high quality customer service. I am delighted to say that I get this month after month from both Tanis and Nicole.
I wouldn’t advertise in a magazine that didn’t care about my business. With Sussex Living, I know they will give me the professional support and genuine concern for promoting my business that I am looking for.
In particular, I am thrilled with my two advertorials and I would like to thank Nicole whose writing skills captured exactly what I wanted to put across to my customers.
I am getting new customers every month as a direct result of advertising in Sussex Living and will keep taking full pages because it works for me!

However, what most people don’t know is that record dealers can not only offer you the best price for music, but they also have the biggest selection with the added benefit of being able to see before you buy, ensuring your purchases are of the best quality which is crucial if you are buying collectors items.
Frequented by the thrifty, frivolous and the famous with new and vintage music related items, available on all formats the 2011 records fair is set to be a huge success especially as this year funds including the money raised from the sale of the Brighton Centre’s recent artists memorabilia and posters will be donated to help the incredible work of the Rocking Horse Charity.
What’s more, for the first time ever the Records Fair is holding their very own ‘Tacky Tour T-Shirt’ promotion not only offering guests who wear their tackiest tour t-shirts half price entry to the fair but also giving them the chance to win £100 worth of cash prizes.
The record fair will be at the Brighton Centre on Sunday 4th September from 9.30am – 4.30pm and costs just £2 to get in (early entry £5). So whether you are 99 or 5 years old there is something for everyone and is the perfect day out for any music fan.
For tickets and more information about the Records Fair please visit www.brightoncentre.co.uk or call 01273 290 131.

Looking for Community Energy Volunteers
Mid Sussex District Council is looking for Community Energy Volunteers to help local residents stay warm and well in their homes through improved insulation, better understanding of fuel bills, and through practical support and advice.
Full training and support is being offered by Mid Sussex District Council and leading fuel poverty charity National Energy Action to those who wish to become a Community Energy Volunteer. Participants will be offered the opportunity to receive training and the possibility of achieving a formal qualification, meet new people, and really make a difference in the community.
Anyone can become a rural energy champion as long as they have contact with people within their local community either as neighbours, family and friends and/or as a member of a local voluntary group, sports club, faith organisation, etc. Mid Sussex District Council and National Energy Action are particularly keen to recruit champions who come into contact with those residents on low incomes, the elderly, those with young children and/or those living with disabilities or long-term illnesses.
Informal information sessions are being held to recruit potential volunteers on Thursday 1 September at 10-12noon, 2pm-4pm or 6-8pm at West Hoathly Village Hall, North Lane, West Hoathly, West Sussex, RH19 4QG.
“With bills rising and different fuels becoming scarcer, it is so important that we are kept informed about energy and that residents stay warm and well in their homes,” said Councillor Pru Moore, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Sustainability. “I really hope that people with an interest make the most of the Council’s training and then go on to share the learning with their community.” If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please email Celia Austin, Sustainability Officer for Mid Sussex District Council, on Celia.Austin@midsussex.gov.uk or call 01444 4777370.

In addition to the Ploughing Match the culmination of every farming year and the start of the next, the Association runs farming competitions in the area for such classes as Field Crops. i.e. wheat ,barley, oats, oil seed rape and maize etc., best managed farms, livestock i.e. dairy cows, beef herds, sheep, ewes and lambs as well as samples of corn hay and silage.
The champion Ploughman of each year’s event is eligible to complete in the Sussex Ploughing Championship which then leads to the National Ploughing Match. Over the years Hurstpierpoint Agricultural Association has sent many winning ploughman to the National Championship, this year Mark Leadbetter has won through to the Nationals. Mark, following in the footsteps of Roger Leadbetter, his Father, is a very well known Sussex Ploughman in his own right. He started ploughing as a teenager in the 1980s. At first he ploughed as a way of making a few extra pounds in the evenings then he made a deal with the farm owner Jimmy Bostock in which Mark ploughed for 12 hours in exchange for one hours flying lesson in his aeroplane. This resulted in Marks love of aviation and subsequently a career as a pilot and as a training Captain with the Airline Flybe.
Marks passion away from flying has always been ploughing where he comments: "It’s a pastime where you see real sportsmanship, as there cannot be many sports where you see competitors stopping during competitions to help each other out." Mark is competing in the National Ploughing Championship near Taunton in Devon in October.
Closer to home don’t forget the 1st of October at Little Park Farm, Hurstpierpoint for our Local Ploughing Match. Everyone is welcome so come along and enjoy spectacular rural day out.

Russettings Care Home: Memories flood back for Lucy on her 100th birthday

| Lucy Downing on her 100th birthday at Russettings Care Home. |
Lucy Downing was born the day before the first “round the world telegram” was sent from the offices of the New York Times in 1911.
And, during the Second World War, it was the telegram that provided the vital source of contact for her and her husband, Ernest, keeping their romance kindled across the battle zones while he served in North Africa.
Their son, Peter, took some of those telegrams along to Russettings Care Home, in Mill Lane, Balcombe, to bring back memories as Mrs Downing celebrated her 100th birthday with residents and staff on Friday (August 19th).
Staff at Russettings, which is owned by Alpha Care Homes, prepared a special celebration for her and activities coordinator Margaret Pickering said: “She was thoroughly spoilt for the day – with flowers, chocolates and her card from the Queen.
“Lucy, who moved into Russettings in February 2010, still enjoys a good chat and she likes me to read to her, which I do often.”
Mrs Downing was born on a farm in Harmsworth, London, on August 19 1911 – and the following day a message left the dispatch room of the Times building in New York, travelling more than 28,000 miles and relayed by 16 different operators around the globe until a reply was received 16.5 minutes later.
She spent her schooldays in Yorkshire but moved back to London and was married at Harmondsworth Church, near Heathrow, when she was 23.
She worked as a personal assistant and bookkeeper in London’s Baker Street, where she handled the accounts of the wartime famous Merrie's Club, a prestigious underground cocktail bar frequented by serving officers.
Her late husband Ernest, who was a solicitor, served in the RAF during the war and the couple later settled in Uxbridge, where they brought up their children, Peter and Christopher, who sadly died from a brain tumour when he was only 23.
She now has two grandchildren, Howard, aged 25, and Anna, 27.
Peter Downing, aged 61, of East Grinstead, said: “As it approached my mother’s 100th birthday, I looked back at her life, and read the telegrams my father sent her during the war, which are now a part of history.
“They were romantic, but not in a tacky way – they were genuine, loving letters from abroad.
"I've also discovered that she worked at the Air Ministry during the war and that, when she was 16, she won a beauty competition in the Daily Chronicle and Sun News.”
He added: “My mother comes from a family who have all lived well into their 90s – but she’s outlasted them all.
“I was at the Russettings care home garden party with her the Saturday before her birthday and she enjoyed several hours outside, attentively watching all that was going on.”

GBSS – Group B Strep Support charity
Group B Streptococcus (group B Strep) is the most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborn babies in the UK, although most pregnant women are unaware of it. Without preventative medicine, it infects up to 700 babies a year, killing up to 75 of them and leaving another 40 with serious long-term mental or physical problems. Yet most of these infections could be prevented – sadly, we just don’t prevent it very well here in the UK, although the charity Group B Strep Support is trying to change that.
Group B Strep Support is campaigning for information about group B Strep to be given routinely to women as part of their antenatal care, and for all low risk women to be offered sensitive tests for group B Strep carriage late in their pregnancy. Then, women who are found to be higher risk (those carrying group B Strep in the current pregnancy, plus those in other recognised higher risk groups) should be offered antibiotics in labour to minimise the risk of these devastating infections in newborn babies.
Sadly it seems unlikely that sensitive testing will not be available on the NHS in the near future, although it is available in other European countries as well as in the US and Canada. Until sensitive testing is available, every pregnant women should be given information about group B Strep, including how to go about getting a private test if they choose to. However, this isn't happening – this ignorance is causing babies and their families to suffer needlessly.
Please take a look at the website www.gbss.org.uk or call 01444 416176 for more information or to find out how you can help.

Mirror mirror on the wall ...
Nicole Tata takes a critical look at fashion, beauty and style.
It's Vintage, dahling!
As a child, I remember delving into Mum’s ‘dressing up box’ where Granny’s old twinsets mingled with flouncy 1970s cocktail robes alongside floaty, pink negligées of unclaimed origin. Teamed with ‘clip clop’ stilettos, a boxy snap-shut leather handbag and lots and lots of fake pearls, I felt terribly grown up.
Fast forward some decades and it is unlikely to have escaped your notice that ‘Vintage’ is having a moment. Can you see what’s happened here? As an exercise in marketing, it’s pure genius. Granny’s old wardrobe has been rediscovered, reconceptualised and rebranded for the next generation, and imbued with old-but-new values of timeless elegance, uncompromising craftsmanship and simple feminine beauty. ‘Vintage’ is now a fashion statement.
As an antidote to every new, ‘hot’ fashion diktat that tumbles from the pages of Vogue et al, ‘Vintage’ can be seen as the thinking woman’s secret to looking stylish without losing her individuality. Remember the huge impact of Julia Roberts, winning her 2001 Oscar wearing vintage Valentino? How about home grown girls such as Sophie Ellis Bextor, Lily Allen and, yes, even Amy Winehouse – all with their own strong sense of style and an enthusiastic nod towards ‘Vintage’.
There are retail outlets everywhere specialising in ‘Retro’ and ‘Vintage’, all offering a wide range of second hand clothes, accessories and jewellery that are stylish yet quirky. Even charity shops have cottoned on and many now have a ‘Vintage’ rail.
You don’t have to go all Mad Men, nor does it have to be vintage Chanel. One-off pieces come in all sizes and price ranges. I recently bought a vintage Mulberry bag for £60 (from a charity shop). And a fall-in-love prom skirt for £135 (from a vintage boutique) which I know I will wear a thousand times. Also, take a fresh look at your own wardrobe: you may already have some ‘Vintage’ pieces but didn’t know it.
The key is not to be afraid. ‘Vintage’ is all about individual style and personality, so it’s good to experiment. If all else fails, I’m back to jeans and T-shirt, teamed with my Granny’s blingy cocktail and worn with nonchalance. It’s vintage, don’t you know! ■

Key in to computer skills at Hurstpierpoint Library
Does the thought of ‘surfing the web’ scare you? Is the only mouse you know a little furry animal? If this sounds familiar, Hurstpierpoint Library (BN6 9UY) has the course for you.
West Sussex County Council’s Library Service has teamed up with Hurstpierpoint College to offer free computer training for beginners at the Library.
The weekly sessions, which start on Friday September 9, 1.30pm - 4.30pm, will see volunteer students from the college help train anyone who needs an introduction to computers, or to using the internet.
The students will be able to help people get started with using keyboards and develop mouse skills. They will also be able to work with users who have some experience, particularly with emails and using the internet.
County Council Deputy Leader, Lionel Barnard, who oversees the Library Service, said: “This is an excellent opportunity for students of Hurstpierpoint college to use their IT skills and knowledge to help learners access computers and the internet.”
To reserve your place, visit the Library or call 01273 832609. If you would like to discuss your training needs, contact Carol Tester on 01444 235549.

A Talk on ancient trees
The Woodland, Flora & Fauna Group, a volunteer group dedicated to protecting local countryside and wildlife, has organised a public talk by Edward Parker, the Project Manager of the Woodland Trust’s Ancient Tree Hunt.
It will take place on Thursday, 25th August at 7.30 pm in the Main Hall at Hurstpierpoint Village Centre, Trinity Road, Hurstpierpoint.
The illustrated talk entitled ‘Ancient Trees’ examines the most spectacular ancient trees of the world including the magnificent range of specimens found in this country, and examines what makes them grow to such ages. It includes giant oaks in England of more than 12 metres in girth and over a thousand years old and Welsh yew trees which could be nearly as old as the Great Pyramids of Egypt.
With a growing awareness of trees having such an important role in our life on earth Edward highlights the work of the Ancient Tree Hunt and his effort to record 100,000 ancient, veteran and notable trees before the end of 2011.
Please come along to listen and marvel at the survival of such ancient natural monuments of ages past. Entry is free and all are welcome. There is a car park opposite the building.

The view from the Downs
by Roger Linn
Over the last few years we’ve taken to swapping homes with European families for a couple of weeks at a time. French, Swiss and Austrian families have briefly taken up residence in Hurstpierpoint and reported back to us on the experience, giving me a unique, foreigners’ view of where and how we live.
They have been universally delighted with their stay. For all of them the extraordinary combination of rural life, Hurstpierpoint’s busy High Street, the stunning Downland villages and our proximity to both the coast and the capital has proved unbeatable. And, of course, as far as they are concerned, the cost of living here is ludicrously cheap. Just how cheap, can be inferred from the £2.25 I was asked to pay for a single banana at Zurich airport last week. Fortunately, I find that I can resist bananas quite easily, but nonetheless trying to exchange Sterling for Euros or Swiss Francs at the moment is so embarrassing that it’s rather as though the UK had decided to use lentils for currency… but I digress.
Some aspects of Mid Sussex living were mentioned by everybody, notably: our wonderful country pubs; the humorous state of our road surfaces and, of course, the arcane mysteries of the railway pricing system which operates between Hassocks and London. But each of the families also took something different from their stay here. The French, whose own home is a large apartment in the centre of Marseille and who have been here twice, spent much of their time visiting car boot sales, with which they have become obsessed. The Austrians from a small, pretty town in the Eastern Tyrol, unaccountably stayed in our garden for almost all of their holiday, whilst the Swiss, with three girls under twelve, were uncharacteristically by far the most adventurous, indulging in almost everything that Sussex has to offer from Brighton Pier to Ditchling Beacon.
They all want to come back and, in reading their thank you letters, I can see why. They describe the many reasons why I’m never unhappy returning to Hurstpierpoint from foreign parts – no matter how exotic. ■
