On Saturday 5th November at the Village Centre, Trinity Road, Hurstpierpoint, the Artwork Project Group will be putting on display three scale model submissions in a competition for a commemorative sculpture.
The APG is made up from members of the St Lawrence Fair Committee, Hurst Society, Museum Group, Parish Council and others, and wished to produce a permanent memorial to the origins of the Fair. As 2013 is the 700th anniversary of the granting of the charter, by King Edward II, for the village to hold its annual St. Lawrence Fair, a competition has been launched to find a local artist to produce a piece of art for the village.
Similar events may be repeated in many towns and villages around the country as 1313 was a busy time for the King, who granted many fair charters that year in order to swell his coffers by gaining cash from the taxes raised from the fairs!
During the one month of public consultation, the Artwork Project Group hopes that visitors to the display will complete opinion forms with their comments and leave them with the Parish Council office. The three local artists have made models of their designs and the successful one will be commissioned to produce the final piece to be enjoyed by everyone visiting the Village Garden, perhaps for the next 700 years!
