Fran-tastic!!! Sussex Band Reaches UK Finals of X Factor Style Competiton
Sussex band 'Fran Classic' have won their way through to the national finals of the 'Open Mic UK' competition and will compete for the title at the O2 Arena on 15 January 2011.
The trio was one of four acts that made it through the regional final which was held at the Portsmouth Guildhall on Saturday to win a place at the O2 event.
Band members Roman Scott from Henfield Dan Wheale from Albourne and Fraser Forbes from Hurstpierpoint played a three minute set which included a cover of Jason Mraz's 'Geek in the pink' as well as one of their own compositions 'Not Living'.
Lead singer and guitarist Fraser said "We were a bit nervous before we went on but had a great time once we got out on stage. The opportunity to play at the O2 is amazing and we're all really looking forward to the experience."
Fran Classic have been together as a band for only a year although they have known each other since childhood and will be competing against more than 20 other acts in an effort to win the prize of a management contract record deal and 100 date expenses paid tour.

Artists provide alternative to Christmas pop-ups
Put more love into your Christmas – that's the message from artists working in an empty shop in Shoreham by Sea.
And to help, they're running sessions every Tuesday evening until Christmas, helping people to make cards, decorations and gifts. The emphasis will be on the unusual, and there will be lots of inspiring ideas using affordable, easy to find and even recycled materials. Everything that's needed will be provided, and there will be tea, coffee and biscuits available to keep everyone fuelled throughout the sessions. The evenings will be led by Shoreham artist Lou Durham, with help from other artists.
'Many of Britain's town centres are suffering this Christmas, with an estimated 12,000 independent shops closed in the last year,' says Dan Thompson, from the Empty Shops Network, 'so we're suggesting people make something special, as an antidote to the Christmas shops filling the holes in our high streets this month.'
The weekly workshops will be held at Agora, the HQ of the Empty Shops Network. The organisation have been leading the campaign to recycle empty shops and other unused spaces across the UK. Dan is the network's founder, has written two guides to reusing empty shops, and is acknowledged as a leading authority on arts and community use of empty spaces. Agora itself was derelict, and has been refurbished to provide a space for the local community to use. It has hosted exhibitions, workshops, meetings and rehearsals.
Put More Love Into Christmas is open at Agora, 1a New Road, Shoreham by Sea every Tuesday from 23rd November until Christmas, from 7-9pm, and sessions cost £5. For more information follow @artistsmakers on Twitter or visit www.artistsandmakers.com

Late Night Opening and Family Carol Service in Forest Row
Thursday 16 December
This is the third year of this wonderful event where villagers just turn up and we wander round the village stopping at different places to sing. A lovely family event full of atmosphere.
Hurstpierpoint Traders’ Christmas Evening
Thursday 9 December, 18.00-21.00
The High Street will be closed between 6pm and 8pm. The main attraction will be a live crib – courtesy of Jessica Jenkins of Washbrooks Farm – in the bus shelter, with 3 celebrity Wise Men in attendance!
Nikki Sharp of the Cook Shop has arranged for a Steam Engine (working!) to be in place by the lane entry to the car park, and we are close to confirming the Police car scene which was a great success 2 years ago.
The Mint House are organising a children's book reading outside the shop, together with a shepherd (the reader!) and a sheep. Clive Miller will be doing his sausage bbq, and the Scouts will be selling hot soup on the Green.
JanTon News are organising a mega raffle of a Giant Teddy Bear, all in aid of our designated charity. Lighthouse IFA will be once again inviting visitors to guess the closing price of the DOW Jones in New York – with a cash prize for the winner! Neil Batsford, the Town Crier, will be joining us for the evening.
Most shops will be open all evening offering drinks and nibbles to shoppers. This year all funds raised during the evening will be donated to a small charity - the Mobile Christmas Service. It provides hot food in warm locations, clothes and toiletries, companionship, and advice for homeless people over the Christmas period. Don't miss this enjoyable start to the Christmas season, and support our local shops.

East Sussex Council for Voluntary Youth Service AWARDS CELEBRATE VOLUNTERS IN EAST SUSSEX
ESCVYS Award Winner 2010
East Sussex Council for Voluntary Youth Service AWARDS CELEBRATE VOLUNTERS IN EAST SUSSEX
The winners of awards recognising the talent and selfless dedication of volunteers who change the lives of thousands of young people in East Sussex each day have been announced.
The winners and runners-up in eight categories celebrating youth and community voluntary work in East Sussex were announced at the ESCVYS 2010 Awards held in the Winter Gardens in Eastbourne on Thursday. (November 18)
Eight awards were presented to young volunteers across East Sussex, in recognition of their contribution to inspiring and motivating young people during the past year.
A tremendous performance was staged by Ali Gunes, of Chailey Youth Group. Ali is an up and coming UK rapper who performed one of his own tracks. Ali writes his own music and lyrics and is performing in local venues around the county. Ali AKA KDOTTJ is currently 18th in the UK underground charts and wants to get his music heard. “Music is my life, I cannot go a single day without listening to beats and writing my lyrics” KDOTTJ was commended highly for his performance and is hoping to attend other music events.
Ali Gunes, 17, of Chailey won the YOUNG VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR 2010. Ali was instrumental in setting up Chailey Youth Group (CYG) 4 years ago to support his community in meeting the local needs of young people in the village targeting crime, vandalism and providing the young people somewhere safe and motivating to meet on Friday nights. KDOTTJ has run media projects and song writing competitions.
“Chailey youth group is a small, grass roots organisation run by dedicated volunteers in their spare time which provide an invaluable service in their community. They were awarded second in the charity 4Childrens awards ceremony last June for their tremendous enthusiasm and dedication to change.”

Volunteers walk over burning coals to help Cats Protection
We may be a nation of animal lovers, but on 4th November eighteen volunteers went the extra mile – or should we say extra 20 feet – and raised £2,800 for Cats Protection with a barefoot walk over hot coals.
The daredevil event was held at Withdean Sports Complex in Brighton, with the fearless cat lovers supported by around forty cheering spectators.
These thrill-seeking participants braved 800 degrees Fahrenheit to raise cash for the cat charity which helps 215,000 unwanted cats and kittens each year.
Katrina Hodges, Cats Protection’s Fundraising Manager said: “The Firewalk was not only worthwhile, but also fun. It was great that the event not only raised an incredible amount of money for Cats Protection, but also inspired everyone taking part to try something new and exciting.
“I’d like to say a very big thank you to our intrepid firewalkers, and to everyone who sponsored them. The funds will go a long way to helping us ensure a brighter future for unwanted cats.”
Cats Protection is the UK’s leading cat welfare charity and helps over 215,000 unwanted cats and kittens through a national network of 256 volunteer-run branches and 30 adoption centres.

Spinal Research Raceday at Plumpton Racecourse – Wednesday 1st December
The Stewart Family are continuing their generous support of Spinal Research by sponsoring the complete raceday at Plumpton Racecourse on Wednesday 1st December, to raise awareness of the 40,000 people suffering with a spinal injury in the UK.
Commenting on his support for the Spinal Research Raceday at Plumpton, Andy Stewart said: “For obvious reasons this is a cause close to my heart, and a raceday sponsorship is a great opportunity to increase awareness of Spinal Research and highlight the great work that it does for victims of spinal injuries. Many people involved in racing have experienced spinal accidents and we are committed to continue the quest to help, understand and to seek a cure.”
Spinal Research is the UK’s leading charity funding medical research around the world to develop reliable treatments for paralysis caused by a broken back or neck. There are over 40,000 people who have suffered paralysis through spinal cord injury in the UK, and this number is increasing at a rate of over 800 a year. Injuries are sustained as a result of falls, road traffic accidents and sporting and activity injuries, in particular horse riding, diving and rugby.
Spinal Research raises over £2million a year to fund research into clinical treatments as well as vital basic scientific research. Thanks to this work, the treatment of paralysis is improving all the time and some therapies can now, in some cases, help restore movement and feeling, in the process transforming the lives of paralysed people.
The Stewart Family’s sponsorship on behalf of Spinal Research started with the Supreme Novices Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March, won by Menorah, who is now one of the favourites for the 2011 Champion Hurdle.
The meeting includes the second of six qualifiers, the Cenkos Channel Islands supports Spinal Research Novices’ Chase, for Plumpton's £60,000 SIS Cheltenham Bonus race series, and the Stewart Family are also sponsoring a race in support of fifteen times champion jump jockey A.P. McCoy for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year competition.
Doors open at 11.00am, with the first of seven races due off at 12.30pm. Accompanied Children under 18 enjoy free entry, and with admission prices starting from only £12.50 for Adults in advance, including a free race programme, it’s a great value day out.

Ditchling Morris and Mummers 25th Year Christmas 2010
This year is the 25th time that Ditchling Morris and Mummers will appear at the Bull Hotel, Ditchling on Boxing Day. We shall perform the same play as that on the 26th December 1986 and we hope to have some of the original players taking part. We shall be collecting for charity and this year our charity is the St Peter and St James Hospice.
Mumming plays and Morris are part of our heritage and one of our principle aims and objectives is to promote this. We perform Morris dances in the Cotswold style and Mumming plays from Sussex of which there are 17 in total.
This year’s play comes from the village of Fittleworth. The village is about 2 miles from Pulborough in West Sussex.
Characters include Father Christmas, Billy Twing Twang, King George the Turkish Knight, Valiant Soldier, the Prince of Peace and of course the Doctor.
It is a very popular event and attracts well over 300 people from all over Sussex. Last year we raised over £1000 and our target this year is to exceed this figure.
Don’t miss this event on Sunday, 26 December at The Bull Hotel, Ditchling, at 1pm. We will have carol singing followed by the Mummers Play and Morris Dancing.

Sunday 28 November - Thursday 2 Dec 19.30
The Nativity.
Wivelsfield Little Theatre at Wivelsfield Parish Church, Church Lane
THE NATIVITY - BUT NOT AS WE KNOW IT!

Presented largely by candlelight it portrays the birth of Christ as our forebears saw it. Jesus is born before the audience's eyes, Joseph loses his cool with Mary and Herod has children under the age of two killed. But the shepherds are a laugh a minute!
Performances are at 7.30pm. The Box Office is 01444 471751. Tickets are £7.
As always, we do not recommend The Nativity as suitable viewing for children under 12.

EL BANO DEL PAPA (Cert. 15)
Directors: C. Charlone, E. Fernandez. Uruguay 2007. 90min
Keen-eyed and unsentimental. this sweet and evocatively titled Uruguayan comedy is almost certainly one of the sweetest films you’re likely to see this year. The twinkle-eyed, but luckless, Beto scrapes a living by smuggling goods across the Brazilian border on his bicycle. However, when the Pope Juan Pablo II decides to come to his small Uruguayan border town, he – along with the rest of the villagers – decides it is his one chance to cash in on the flurry of activity that the visit prompts. Beto’s grand plan is to build a toilet outside his house for paying customers but first he has to deal with the corrupt border patrol. With its air of a modern-day morality tale, in which the pomp and platitudes of the church are contrasted with the realities of life at the sharp end of poverty, this is a beautifully played, bittersweet comedy about honesty, friendship and family ties.
Members Free. Guests and temporary members £4 payable at the door. Doors open from 7.30pm.

Charitable Festive Fun at this year’s Cuckfield Christmas Tree Festival
The annual Cuckfield Christmas Tree Festival will be held over the weekend of the 11th & 12th December 2010. The Festival sees the beautiful Holy Trinity Church transformed into a Christmas wonderland of light and music with over 70 uniquely decorated trees adorning the pews and aisles.
Now in it’s eighth year, the festival brings Christmas spirit and a little bit of magic to all those who visit. The organising committee is pleased to announce that this year’s partner charity will be the Down’s Syndrome Association (DSA). Once again local businesses, organisations and societies are being invited to sponsor and decorate one of the 70 trees on display.
2010 marks the DSA’s 40th anniversary of providing help for people with Down’s syndrome. Back in 1970 the organisation started as a small support group of parents helping other parents. During the past 40 years it has grown into a highly respected national charity covering ALL aspects of living with Down’s syndrome.
Alexa Dizon, Events Manager at the DSA said “We are truly honoured to be part of such a special event and are incredibly excited to be able to decorate our own tree with decorations hand made by our local members. The DSA relies almost entirely on voluntary donations to continue operating and events such as these are an integral part of our fund raising each year.”
The Rev'd Canon Nick Wetherall, Vicar of Holy Trinity Church said “ It is a real pleasure to work with the staff at the DSA this year because it is a highly valuable and worthwhile charity and it can only serve to strengthen our existing ties with Court Meadow School here in Cuckfield”.
The festival is open on Saturday 11th December from 11.30am until 6.30pm and on Sunday 12th from 11.30am until 5.30pm followed by a special Carol Service at 6.00pm with mulled wine and mince pies. Admission to the festival is £3. Children under 16 are free when accompanied by an adult.

The lights are being turned on at 6.15 p.m. on the 25th by Josh Pay who was the winner of the poster competition we ran with Hassocks Infant School. There were over 50 entries and the judges, local artist Hagop Kasparian and District Councillor Sue Hatton had a difficult task to pick the winner. But, as you can see, Josh’s entry was a worthy winner.
We have had an excellent response to our fundraising over the past few months. In particular, the coffee morning in October raised a fantastic £352. A big ‘thank you’ must go to all the cake bakers from the WI and other local residents for their delicious donations, and to David Knight of Knight’s Budgens for donating the tea, coffee and squash plus a raffle prize.
The following traders also kindly donated prizes for the raffle or tombola: Designers Choice, The Market Place, the staff at Barclays Bank, National Tyres, Leahy’s Hairdressers, Stanford Spa Lagoon, Hassocks Pet Centre, Carol’s Café, Deux Amies, the Hassocks Hotel, Hair Emporium, Childhelp Hassocks, Thatcher’s Hairdressers, Rocking Horse Antiques Market, Pavilion Electrics, Hassocks Wines, Boots and Day Lewis Chemist.
We have also been fundraising at recent Village Markets. Many thanks to Kate O’ Sullivan, the Market Manager, for enabling us to do so.
The following shops and groups have donated directly to Light Up Hassocks: Rotary Club, Indigo, Hedgehog & Bumbles, Humanity at Heart and the Hassocks WI Committee and Roger Booth Associates have supported the printing of our publicity material.
We’ve had fantastic support from Hassocks residents, who have not only attended our events, but have given generously through the collecting tins in shops, at Hassocks Station on 1st November and sponsored individual lights.
Lighting up Hassocks has been a real community project and we hope you’ll enjoy the results over the coming weeks. Happy Christmas from everyone on the WI Community Group Light Up Hassocks committee.
Best wishes, Lucinda Hawkes

Symphony of Music and Carols at Burgess Hill
Symphony of Music & Carols at It’s Magic Christmas Concert
Come and enjoy an enchanting evening of Christmas Music at The Triangle, Burgess Hill on Sunday 12 December. The very talented Sussex Symphony Orchestra will be led by the charismatic conductor, Mark Andrew James. Andrew Rees recently described as ‘an exciting tenor with a voice to burnish gold’ will be joined by soprano Jo Appleby to celebrate the Christmas season with seasonal and traditional music that perfectly captures the spirit of Christmas.
Andrew Rees true to his Welsh background began singing at a very early age. He graduated with honours from the Royal Northern College of Music to become a full time teacher but his calling in life was to perform. He studied opera and joined the renowned English National Opera as a principal tenor. Andrew has performed at all the major concert venues in the UK and broadcast live on Radio and TV many times and recently at the prestigious Henley Festival and Classical Glastonbury. Jo Appleby is a classically trained soprano performing regularly at Glynebourne and former member of the opera group Amici Forever, with whom she achieved a platinum album. This year Jo appeared at the O2 Arena in Carmen, and with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Glastonbury Abbey and Canary Wharf.
The Sussex Symphony Orchestra will be led Mark Andrew James who has chosen an outstanding repertoire of Christmas music and Carols. The SSO now in its 17th successful year has grown to become one of the country’s leading semi professional orchestras, made up of professional, semi professional and amateur musicians who are all based in Sussex.

Annual Late Night shopping in Lingfield with Meridian FM.

Capturing Colour: Film, Invention and Wonder
Brighton Museum & Art Gallery
4 December 2010 to 20 March 2011
We take the moving image in colour for granted, but the search for a way to capture the world in colour is a story of ingenious inventions, personal obsession, magic and illusion, scientific discovery, glamour, hard work and determination.
This new exhibition explores and celebrates this quest for colour on film. It focuses on the moving image in Britain from the origins in magic lanterns, early colour photography and Kromskops, to applied colour films, Kinemacolor, Technicolor, Kodachrome and Eastmancolor. Fantasy worlds, fairy tale genies, the wonders of the natural world, pageantry, cinema blockbusters and home movies all illustrate the stories of our desire to capture the world in colour.
Free admission

The Last Carnival strikes out with forgotten Rock Show Music for the 21st Century. Ingredients for this Christmas show: Take the roots of 50s/60s rock and roll, add a little country and blues and mix with 80s/90s British guitar music. Add some modern day disillusionment for colour. Always make sure all songs have plenty of melody. Season well with lots of emotion. Serve hot! One of Brighton’s biggest up and coming bands will be celebrating at The Triangle on Sunday 12 December. Their guitar driven music is big on melody with rousing choruses sprinkled with heartfelt ballads. Prepare for dancing and thumping rhythms. Their undoubted potential has already been recognised by local media and already booked to play at high profile shows.
This will be an extraordinary evening of pure energy!
Support band 900 spaces are a four piece Indie band. Their music is probably best described as disco inspired Indie-Pop, and the band have been playing and producing independently released EP’s since 2008. Conceptualised in 2005 by front-girl Emma Lou, and guitarist Adam House, the band have spent long hard hours designing every crease and fold in the 900 Spaces dynamic. 2010 has seen the release of a new double A side 'Lady Go' on Itunes, Amazon, and a limited CD run
Catch them live in and around Brighton and London in the new year, or on www.myspace.com/900spacesuk
If you do one thing for your health and happiness this Christmas, then take notice of these up and coming bands on the brink of discovery.

Daily Thought
Go easy. You may have to push forward, but you don't have to push so hard. Go in gentleness, go in peace.
Do not be in so much of a hurry. At no day, no hour, no time are you required to do more than you can do in peace. Frantic behaviors and urgency are not the foundation for our new way of life.
Do not be in too much of a hurry to begin. Begin, but do not force the beginning if it is not time. Beginnings will arrive soon enough.
Enjoy and relish middles, the heart of the matter.
Do not be in too much of a hurry to finish. You may be almost done, but enjoy the final moments. Give yourself fully to those moments so that you may give and get all there is.
Let the pace flow naturally. Move forward. Start. Keep moving forward. Do it gently, though. Do it in peace. Cherish each moment.
Today, God, help me focus on a peaceful pace rather than a harried one. I will keep moving forward gently, not frantically. Help me let go of my need to be anxious, upset, and harried. Help me replace it with a need to be at peace and in harmony.

Hurstpierpoint: Book Launch
Hurstpierpoint author, Kevin Carey, launched his first novel at the Mint House bookshop in the High Street last Saturday. Dozens of people enjoyed a glass of wine, bought signed copies of the book, and explored the newly refurbished shop.
Kevin is a well-known community activist, writer and poet who has produced drama and sings in two choirs.
This is the summary of Perpetua’s story
Perpetua, a 19-year-old Afro-Caribbean girl from South London says she is God and performs amazing technological miracles to prove it. Her mission has hilarious and tragic consequences as politicians, bishops, tabloid hacks and gang leaders try to come to terms with her mission. This profoundly philosophical and witheringly satirical novel follows Perpetua to her humiliating death live on television on Good Friday 2007. Her story is told by a tabloid journalist, a social worker responsible for her surveillance, an FE multimedia student and a theology postgraduate. The novel concludes with Perpetua's Resurrection, paving the way for sequels.
Henfield Spirit of Christmas
Friday 10 December, 16.00-20.00
Fun for all the family. Carol singing, handbell-ringing, musical groups, charity fund-raising stalls and a variety of amusements for the children (including fairground rides) will be highlights of the festivities.
Santa and his sleigh (courtesy of the BP Guild) will be in the centre of the village and he will also have a grotto nearby in the bus shelter (courtesy of Henfield Youth Club). Other activities in Henfield for the ‘Spirit of Christmas’ evening include competitions, shops open with refreshments for customers and various food stalls. Come and enjoy an evening of dazzling features, under the bright Christmas lights of Henfield.
Keymer Fire Station to close

Keymer fire station may close due to cut backsDespite strong opposition, Peter Evans, Cabinet Member for Public Protection, has given the go-ahead to plans in the Fire and Rescue Service’s ‘Modernisation Programme’ to increase manpower at Burgess Hill’s retained station and close the station at Keymer.
Hassocks will be covered from Burgess Hill, using whole-time firefighters from Horley to provide additional cover at peak times in the day.
What do you think?
Will this ‘modernisation’ help provide a better service across the county or will it create problems?

Paul Austin Kelly at Hammerwood Park, East Grinstead
Dear Friends
Is anyone coming on Saturday 20 November at 4pm? I really don't put on any old concerts at Hammerwood just as commercial space fillers in ordinary venues. Each of the concerts we arrange comes about through some personal knowledge of the performer or the programme and if I tell you that someone is amazing . . . they are.
Frankly, I have never ever ever heard a more golden voice than Paul Austin Kelly's - and his accompaniist was revered by the teacher of my organ master of 35 years ago. Martin Isepp is a legend of a musician within his own lifetime, and it's a significant privilege to be able to hear them.
Add to that that this concert is to raise funds for two Cancer charities that provide help to so many, this concert really is worth more than the usual lack of enthusiasm to bother to come out and come to at 4pm. And please remember that as Children are free of charge, so that after their teenage they know that there really is life beyond the nightclub, just grab any children you can bring . . . and bring them.
Please ring 01342 850594 to reserve seats.
Best wishes
