Your Best Body Challenge for charity: Cuckfield 10th April

Fitness Experts to Help Hundreds of Haywards Heath PeopleTransform Their Bodies In 10 Weeks…FREE

Ben Davis, the co-owner of Sussex Bootcamps is on a mission with his team to change the shape of Mid Sussex. His Your Best Body Challenge could help hundreds of local residents transform their bodies in 10 weeks, free of charge.

“There’s no cost to participate in the challenge,” says Ben, “all we ask is that each person make a small, one-time donation to Star Light Children’s charity. That’s it.”

Your Best Body Challenge is part of the fitness and weight loss contest phenomenon started by the hit TV show, The Biggest Loser. “That show really focused the nation’s attention on the benefits of participating in a contest, guided by certified personal trainers, in terms of the motivation and accountability necessary for success,” explains Ben “It’s difficult to lose weight on your own. Anyone who’s tried and struggled knows that – and unfortunately, that’s the majority.”

Go to http://www.sussexchallenge.com and that will give you the details of the challenge and provides a complete guide that can be downloaded instantly, containing instructions, questions and answers, rules and regulations, prizes awarded to winners and even a complete 10-week exercise and nutrition program.

“Anyone living here in Mid Sussex over the age of 18 is welcome to participate,” Ben says. “We want to help as many people as we can, and this is the best way to do that.”

The challenge starts Saturday April 10th at Whitman’s Green, Cuckfield.

Hassocks Residents in Brighton Marathon

April 18th sees the first ever Brighton Marathon and lots of local people are taking up the challenge and training hard for this 26.1 mile run. If you see runners out and about looking absolutely shattered, like they can barely lift their feet, chances are that’s one of us nearly home from a loooooong run! We’re building up the distance and are now trying to do runs of around 20 miles. For some of us that means being out for over four hours. The challenge in running the marathon is not so much in running on the day, we’re all hoping that the crowds, the atmosphere and our adrenaline will see us through April 18th, but more in getting out four or five times a week and running. We’ve run in wind, rain, hail and even through six foot snow drifts on the downs!

We are running for many different reasons, because it’s there, because it’s been a lifetime goal, because we love to run and for some of us because we are trying to raise money for a charity that is important to us. If you can support any of us by cheering us on on the day, (it promises to be a really good Brighton day out,) giving us a shout when you see us around locally or by donating to the charities we are raining for we’d all be really grateful. For details of how to donate please give me a call.

Celebrate the Easter Holidays with Cats Protection’s Eggstravaganza!

Cats Protection’s National Cat Adoption Centre is holding an Eggstravaganza to help families and children make the most of their school Easter holiday!

The centre, based in Chelwood Gate, Sussex, is holding the special day on Saturday 10 April (10am to 4pm), offering a fun day out and a chance to meet more than 250 unwanted cats in desperate need of new homes.

And officially opening the Eggstravaganza is someone that families with young children will recognise – CBeebies television presenter, Sarah-Jane Honeywell!

Sarah-Jane, who has three Birmans called Aslan, Zazel and Gandalf said: “As someone who loves cats and works on children’s television I am thrilled to be taking part! I adore my three cats and spend every moment I can with them so I hope families come along on the day to meet their ideal family pet!”

Activities include an Easter egg hunt, face painting and a raffle. Visitors are asked to bring their own Easter bonnet, as there will be a prize for the best one. Autographed photos of well-known children’s stars, including Rolf Harris and Emma Watson, are also up for sale, with proceeds going towards helping cats in the centre’s care.

Two cats hoping for eggstra-good luck are ginger cat Eggbert and tabby-and-white Bunny, who were brought to the centre last October after their previous owner couldn’t look after them anymore. Both cats are extremely affectionate and are looking for a home where they can be the only pets.

Tania Marsh, the centre’s Deputy Manager said: “As well as being a great way to end the school easter holiday, the Eggstravaganza is a great chance to meet Eggbert, Bunny and other cats like them, so why not come along!”

To find out more about the Eggstravaganza, please call the centre on 08707 708 650 or email ncac@cats.org.uk <mailto:ncac@cats.org.uk> . A map and directions to the centre can be found at http://www.cats.org.uk/contact/ncc.asp.

Spring Sunday in East Grinstead

Just to let you know the fantastic Spring Sunday set in the beautiful Historic High Street will be back on Sunday April 11th and this year it is going to be bigger and better !

Last year a great day was had by everyone and the feedback from the public was exceptional. The High Street looked at its very best, and the press and the Town Council ran the story for months afterwards; it was heralded as the nicest and most prestigious event in the Town Calendar. To top that Sackville College raised more on that day than any other town event ....ever...!

We will be running the event again this year and will be inviting the top local attractions to set up stall and promote themselves. On the day our local nurseries will be displaying colour on the High Street steps with their bedding plants & shrubs, local crafts people will be demonstrating their skills and the most prestigious visitor attractions from the surrounding area will be there.

Music will play an important part with bands & singers performing all day, and Alan Charman and his vintage bus will once again be ferrying people, free of charge, to see the sights of East Grinstead.

This is a great day to show East Grinstead and the Mediaeval High Street at its best. It is once again being organised by the High Street traders, with the Town Council, the Tourist Office and EGBA offering financial and promotional support.

Any money raised on the day will be given to the Peanut Ward, at QVH.

Borde Hill: Juginder Lamba exhibition

Borde Hill Garden is offering visitors a rare opportunity to see inside its stunning and historic Grade II listed Tudor Mansion next April (8th – 22nd), when it will host an exclusive indoor exhibition of Juginder Lamba’s distinctive sculptures celebrating the beauty and power of nature.

During his prestigious career, internationally renowned Juginder Lamba has previously exhibited at the British Museum and the Bronx Museum in New York. His overlapping Indian, African and British background is evident in his sculptures. Born in Nairobi in 1948, his gift to be silent and listen to the voice of nature is his Indian heritage while his recognition of the great power innate in natural objects recalls African influences.

Moving to the UK in 1962, his intellectual and emotional awakening found him growing up in Britain, adjusting to a new culture. Through this energetic and creative tension between cultures, Lamba has arrived at a visual language that is not bounded by cultural insularity, giving his work, varying from wood to stone and bronze. an accessibility that is independent of its historical roots. His art transforms these indigenous cultural experiences, opening up new perspectives and ways of seeing.

Lamba’s sculptures, whilst celebrating nature, also address a contemporary environment where the processes of survival, destruction and renewal prevail. His work can be seen as instruments of meditation and contemplation, perfectly complementing the tranquillity and peace that can be discovered within Borde Hill Garden.

The sculptures will be displayed in Borde Hill Mansion, an Elizabethan house dating from 1598 with congruent Victorian extensions. Visitors can discover the history the Stephenson Clarke family who bought and renovated the mansion in 1892 and who still reside in the house and manage the estate today. Colonel Stephenson Robert Clarke, creator of the Garden, sponsored many expeditions by the great plant hunters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and fine examples of many of their discoveries are growing throughout the botanically rich Garden. These extend into 200 acres of magnificent woodland and parkland that enjoy panoramic views of the Sussex Weald.

The Juginder Lamba exhibition will be on view from 8 – 22 April 2010. The Garden will be open from 10am – 6pm everyday. Tours of the House and exhibition will be held at 11.00am and 1.00pm for groups and at 2.00pm for individual visitors. All group tours must be pre-booked and pre-paid at £9.50 per person, inclusive of Garden entry.

Bus memorabilia will be on sale at the High Street HQ as well as special events on the routes with bus operator Southdown PSV hosting an open day at their Snow Hill depot in Copthorne.

Ditchling and the South Downs - a journey with magic lantern, voices and music

From the field to the foundry
A journey with magic lantern, voices and music
Friday, 11th June, 7.30pm
Ditchling Village Hall

An unusual opportunity to explore the history of the South Downs and the Ditchling area through the media of a genuine 19th century ‘magic lantern’, readings and the traditional local songs and music of the era. The magic lantern – Victorian ancestor of the slide projector – depicts images of past times recorded on glass ‘slides’ and shows the old way of life of our village and its environs.

Accompanied by selected poetry and prose readings and local tunes played on authentic traditional instruments, these beautiful images of a bygone way of life evoke both historical enquiry and a nostalgic reflection of the past. The presenters, readers and musicians are dressed in costumes of the period.

All proceeds from the evening will go to our three beautiful Beacon Churches – St Margaret’s (Ditching), St Martin’s (Westmeston) and Streat Church. Tickets cost £8 to include a glass of wine, available from Ditchling Post Office or Sylvia Bain (Tel. 01273 845361)

London Harness Horse Parade - 5th April 2010

Last Year the London Harness Horse Parade took the lead in reducing entry fees. To assist exhibitors to cope with ever spiralling costs, the Committee of the London Harness Horse Parade have again taken the decision to keep the reduced entry fees for the 2010 Parade, which takes place as usual on Easter Monday (5th April 2010) at the South of England Showground, Ardingly, West Sussex.

Due to the generous sponsorship of Fullers Brewery, we are once again able to offer each exhibitor of Heavy Horses £50. towards their travel costs, together with a refund of entry fees for entries forward. Heavy Horses are a vital part of the Parade and this definitely encouraged more Heavy Horses to attend the 2009 Parade, with over 20 Heavy Horses forward representing 7 different breeds. It is hoped that this will continue to encourage more Heavy Horse exhibitors to take part - be it a Trade Turnout, drawing an Agricultural Implement or taking part in the Decorated Harness class. Grateful thanks are passed to Fullers Brewery for their sponsorship support in this respect.

Visitors to the 2010 Parade will once again be able to see the static display of Horse Drawn vehicles, as well as plaiting and harnessing demonstrations. New to the 2010 parade will be shoeing and farriery demonstrations, which should be of great interest to all spectators. There will also be a display of Historic Vehicles to give visitors a chance to see the progression from horse drawn vehicles to the first motor cars. In addition there will be a display of farm machinery. All these attractions will be joined by the old favourites such as the Fullers Brewery Dray Rides and the Pearly Kings and Queens, maintaining the Parades strong London Heritage. We also look forward to welcoming two Chelsea Pensioners who are travelling down to Sussex to take part in this very special Horse drawn Parade.

The London Harness Horse Parade has always strived to maintain its strong traditions and family values and keep its exhibitors and supporters at its heart. We look forward to the return of many past exhibitors and to welcoming new faces. Whether you join us as an exhibitor or spectator, Easter Monday really is a special day and needs putting in your diary. Steeped in tradition, the Parade offers onlookers a glimpse into a world gone by and for those participating, a chance to show off their best turnouts as well as meet up with friends and fellow enthusiasts.

Brighton Carnival 2010 will be on Sunday, 25th July

There's a real buzz in the air about Brighton Carnival with organisers and participants saying that they are determined to make it happen, despite recent news from the Arts Council England – the Carnival’s principle funder - that they will be unable to provide funds this year.

Following a meeting with representatives of eleven community groups last week, the Directors of Brighton Carnival Association say that participants have never been more enthusiastic to do everything they can to generate enough funding to run the event.

During a frank discussion in which the Directors ran through the costs of putting on the Parade, the groups all said that they were eager to step up and meet the challenge head on. Ideas for fundraising events, club nights, and unique carnival ways to raise funds were discussed and will soon be seen in action around the city.

Ady Griffith, local artist and part of Inspiring Arts and The Buddhist Centre said, “Brighton Carnival is an amazing display of colour, creativity, dance and music that benefits the whole city! The Brighton Buddhist Centre and Inspiring Arts love being involved, dancing on the streets. So let’s make it happen! Let’s donate to make it great!”

BCA needs to raise enough funds to pay for the infrastructure on parade day, such as equipment and stages, in addition to salaries for the very small team who manage the event and all the community activity that happens in advance.

There are many ways to help out. Local businesses can sponsor £150 and become a Carnival Hero for ‘saving the day’. Individuals who have enjoyed the free event in past years are also invited to visit the Carnival website and make a donation.

Malcolm Duffitt, from Brighton School of Samba, twice winners of the Carnival Award for ‘Best Big Band’, says, “Brighton School of Samba love Brighton Carnival because we get to bring the sights and sounds of Rio to the streets of Brighton! Smiling faces, shimmying bodies and tapping feet - and that's just the audience! Donating to Brighton Carnival will keep this unique city event alive, and will continue to encourage more local people to participate in the spirit of Carnival.”

The Directors of the Brighton Carnival Association kicked off the fundraising themselves by leading the way with donations. Carnival Chair Caroline Fletcher said ‘We want to build this year’s event from the ground up and knowing that everyone is chipping in to help makes it more special than ever.’

Brighton & Hove City Council, who have also previously funded Brighton Carnival have also showed their support. A council spokesman said: “We are working closely with the Carnival board to provide advice and support and have encouraged them to apply for our community grants to help make up some of the shortfall.”

The event, being staged at Queens Walk and Queens Road will showcase all things military. It is a must-see for anyone interested in military, models or the war years.

Martell’s will be raising money at the event for Help the Heroes, an organisation formed to help those who have been wounded in Britain's current conflicts. There will also be representation from several other charities including The British Legion, SSAFA and The Royal Naval Association. The Town Mayor has also been invited and it is hoped he will attend.

The exhibition will feature over 25 military vehicles, including one which is a 12ft x 12ft x 12ft field kitchen.

There will be demonstrations from the UK Tank Organisation featuring its large-scale remote control tanks and jeeps. Spectators will be able to stand back and admire the shock and awe tactics at close quarters.

To get everyone in the mood the 42nd Street Big Band will be performing tunes from the 1940s, while a local magician and balloonist will be performing shows (for charity) along Queens Walk.

Much-loved manufacturer Airfix will be on hand with a plentiful supply of Spitfire models for wannabe model makers to try their hand at constructing and painting - for free. But the painting won’t stop with the fuselage as Military Face Painting will also be available for little ones (or big ones!) wanting to try out some camouflage make up of the military kind.

W. Britain, William Britain or simply Britains, has been synonymous with toy soldiers since 1893. They produce authentic toy soldiers and military miniatures of outstanding quality and will be present to preview the latest models and answer questions. Two of Britain’s life sized re-enactment actors will also be on board from the first and second world wars. These specialists will not only look the part, but will be able to talk the talk while they walk the walk and will answers questions on their period of expertise.

Darren Oomen, Toy Department Manager for Martell’s explains “This idea started small, as an informal opportunity to show off a few military vehicles in our car park. But from the response over the last two years it’s clear that there is a massive interest in military, militaria and all its associations and Martell’s are proud to be a part of that”.

And if all of that whets the appetite for a career in military, would-be recruits can check out the Air Training Corps recruiting stand.

Bolney Pram Race, Easter Monday 5th April 2010

Bolney’s annual test of man, machine, stamina and a touch of madness is set for Easter Monday, 5th April. The Bolney Pram Race, a community tradition which dates back 20 years was revived last year, after a noticeable absence. Local villagers and supporters built 22 prams which were manned by an interchanging “driver” and a “rider” who had to race around the village course (at quite a gradient) stopping at sponsored, compulsory refreshment stations along the way.

“The idea of course is to raise money for charity” Bob Dryer, the driving force behind the race’s revival, explains “but we do have a lot of fun along the way. The enthusiasm from the local community last year was staggering” and this wasn’t just the 300+ people who either participated, or turned up to cheer competitors on. “Ladies from the Bolney WI marshalled the event, Jessie Foote, at 97 years old one of Bolney’s most senior residents rang the starting bell, local companies and clubs generously sponsored stations, prizes, and trophies, and even assisted with pram building and a providing a safety car.”

More than £800 was raised last year and every penny was given to SERV (Service by Emergency Rider Volunteers), an incredible charity providing out-of-hours transportation of blood and other items urgently required by our local NHS hospitals. They operate 365 days a year, providing 24 hour cover on all bank holidays. “Although the vast majority of runs are made by volunteers at their own expense the charity do now have 4 dedicated bikes but just paying for the 2 sets of tyres that they go through in a year costs £920 per bike.” says Rod Thompson, one of the Sussex SERV riders “and this year of course the weather has been the biggest challenge of all. We are raising funds for a much needed, dedicated 4 wheel drive vehicle.”

And this year organisers are certainly raising the bar with Pit Lane Passes available at £10 each which will include a glass of bubbly, canapés and smoked salmon sandwiches, and a birds-eye view of the Le Mans style start and finish line. Local company Delano LLP and Traffic Systems Ltd are supervising Pram Building Workshops for participants every Saturday in March. There will be live music after the completion of the main race and food will be served from the outside bar at The Eight Bells, Bolney who are hosting the event.

As one local resident enthused last year, quoting Winston Churchill “Have we ever known a greater day like this?”

Easter Bunny Trail at Borde Hill Garden, Haywards Heath

29th March – 18th April 2010

The EASTER BUNNY TRAIL will once again be taking place within the beautiful setting of Borde Hill Garden, Haywards Heath, throughout the Easter holidays from Monday 29th March to Sunday, 18th April and is perfect for children aged 3 – 11 years. Each child who finds the Easter Bunnies hidden around the Garden and solves the word or picture puzzle which each Bunny holds will be rewarded with a delicious chocolate Easter egg.

This great day out is not just a treat for the children however - parents accompanying the youngsters around the Garden can enjoy the extensive collection of camellias, magnolias and rhododendrons which are magnificent at this time of year. Thousands of Spring-flowering bulbs and plants will also make an impressive display in the formal Garden and the ancient Woodland.

If the Trail isn't enough exercise for them, the children can use up their surplus energy in the Pirates' Adventure Playground with its Wild West Fort, Tree Top Walkway and Obstacle Course. Toddlers are entertained in the 'safe sand pit' area. Café Elvira serves morning coffee, delicious home cooked lunches and Sussex cream teas, whilst The Green Tree Gallery is ideal for art and crafts.

Entry to the Garden, which includes the Easter activities and the Pirates' Adventure Playground, is £7.50 per adult, £6.50 Senior Citizens and £4.00 per child. Friends of Borde Hill Garden tickets cost £22.00 per adult and £13.00 per child and provide free Garden and Playground entry throughout the season 2010. Borde Hill Garden is easily accessible by road and rail, with direct services from London Victoria and the South Coast.

Burgess Hill Lions: Books for our boys

HAVE you any unwanted books taking up space or gathering dust? Well, a local charity can put them to good use to fund community projects and to boost our soldiers’ moral in Afghanistan.

Burgess Hill District Lions depends on a constant supply of books, and now there’s a new, more convenient way to donate your second-hand books. From today (17 March), they may be taken to the South Downs Heritage Centre at South Downs Nurseries in Hassocks, which is open every day of the week.

The books will then be sold at the local Lions’ Book Den which is the biggest second-hand book shop in Mid Sussex. Based at 99 Church Walk in Burgess Hill, it sells up to 1,500 titles every week, so new stock is always needed.

Additionally a local Lion has received a direct appeal from his son for books at the military Camp Bastion, in Afghanistan. The soldier has asked Mid Sussex residents to help with he refers to as some home-from-home comforts in the shape of reading books, crossword and puzzle books.
These are desperately needed for the forces’ rest room which is used by a large number of soldiers during their breaks. “The room is in operation 24-hours a day”, he explains. “And we are trying to create a library to be used by all service personnel on operation OP Herrick
The charity realises it’s not always convenient to drop the books off in town and is working with its partners at the South Downs Heritage Centre in Hassocks to make it easier to donate unwanted items which can be used to support projects in Hurstpierpoint, Hassocks and Burgess Hill.

“The Book Den is a very popular venue in the town”, says Lion President Colin Owen. “It's also the final re-cycling place for books as the paper cannot easily be re-cycled. Please pop-in to browse”, he adds. “We welcome people’s old books, CDs, Videos and DVDs. We will sort them and re-cycle any which we can’t sell”, explains Mr Owen. “So nothing goes to waste.”

The Heritage Centre doesn’t charge for admission, instead it asks visitors for donations in aid of local charities including the Burgess Hill District Lions, who use them to benefit the local community. “For over fifty years the Lions have been doing marvellous work in the area, raising money to support those who need a little extra help”, says Jonathan Tate the managing director of South Downs Nurseries. “I am delighted to support them and their community projects through what has been a most successful partnership since the Heritage Centre opened.”

Reader letter from Australia

Dear South Downs Living,

I found your article about the Victoria Pleasure Gardens in this month's edition to be of particular interest.

As a little fella growing up in Burgess Hill in the 60's, this area (and I think we might have called it Victoria Lake?) was a popular spot for us to hang around. Naturally there was no sing of its previous existence, and indeed I was ignorant of it until I read the article!

My old man worked at Sutton Power units, which was located in the Victoria Industrial Estate. I do remember that there were swans on the lake, but no fish as I recall. (I was a keen fisherman!)

I will be visiting my old childhood haunts in May of this year, when I undertake the South Downs Way, and keen to see what will undoubtedly be huge changes in the area.

I enjoy the South Downs Living online..keep up the great work!

Cheers,
Michael Atkins, NSW, Australia

Reader letter ...

Dear Mr Booth,
It gives me great pleasure to respond to your request for feedback on South Downs Living because from the first time I picked it up, when my son took out a self-ad in November 2008, I have looked forward to each monthly edition.
Quite apart from its content, the excellent articles of local and general interest, lovely photographs and useful advertisements, what I enjoy is the feel of it, the glossiness and the sturdy pages. I take only two other magazines, Saga and Radio Times, and they now use such thin paper it is hard to turn just one page at a time.
You will gather that I am not in my first youth, so the quality of your production takes me back to a time when I treated myself to the occasional Vogue, and now I have the same high-class sensation all for free!
Yours sincerely,
Marjorie Hancock, Haywards Heath

Hassocks Superhome wins praise of West Sussex County Council

A Hassocks resident has gone the extra green mile and achieved ‘Superhome Status’ from the National Energy Foundation.

Chris Handel and his family have transformed their former 1920s three-bedroom chalet bungalow into a four-bedroom house that meets top green credentials. The family has installed high-grade insulation throughout the house, solar thermal panels on the roof, a wood burner and gas boiler. Together with water efficiency measures, their gas, electricity and water bills have been reduced by more than 60 percent, saving them more than £1,000 per year. The energy efficiency rating of their house has moved from an F to a B.

West Sussex County Council Deputy Cabinet Member for Environment and Economy Mike Hall said: “I’d like to congratulate the Handel family for their dedication to going green. West Sussex has a number of Greening Campaigns for communities that encourage households to take simple measures to cut their energy usage.

“There are also various schemes available where households can apply for grants to help them go green. Residents can contact the West Sussex Energy Saving Trust Advice Centre for further details.”

Chris said: “Given the winter we have had and ever higher utility bills some of the measures we took have already paid for themselves and our house is much more comfortable too. Once we had decided to do something we found that there’s lots of advice and help out there making it easier to act then we first imagined.”

The family are holding an open day at their house on Sunday March 28 for anyone interested in finding out more.

West Sussex residents can learn more at the Hassocks, Keymer and Ditchling Eco-Fair, which takes place on Saturday April 10, at Ditchling Village Hall, between 11am and 4pm.

The fair will give ideas and information to residents on how they can make their homes and lives more environmentally friendly. There will also be displays of energy efficient products, renewable energy installations and information on grants and schemes.

For further information on the Eco Fair and the Superhome open day visit www.hkdtransition.org.uk. To contact the West Sussex Energy Saving Trust Advice Centre telephone 0800 512 012.

Burgess Hill girls to join record bid on BBC Weather News

Year 2 pupils at Burgess Hill School for Girls joined hundreds of schools across the country in a bid to break the world record for the largest interactive weather report.

The girls joined in with the BBC News School Report as part of their Geography topic on The Local Area. They took temperature readings at 9.15am on Thursday 11th March and emailed them to the BBC to be included in a special broadcast.

Eleanor Holdcroft, a Year 2 pupil said, ‘We were surprised to see that it was only seven degrees Celsius – it felt much colder!’

Each school taking part has a disc on an interactive weather map which will be used to show the variation of temperatures across Britain.
To create a new record more than 250 schools needed to send in their temperatures and the BBC believe this target was reached and are waiting for the Guinness World Records to give their official verification.

The activity aims to encourage children to develop journalistic skills and engage with the news. BBC Forecaster, Carol Kirkwood, commented on the event on the BBC Breakfast programme saying, ‘The weather is the one thing in our lives which changes on a daily, even hourly, basis. It's hugely interesting and lots of fun.’

London Harness Horse Parade South of England Showground, Ardingly

APRIL 5TH 2010

Cats Protection near Haywards Heath launches 'Feline Oscars'

Sussex charity launches “Feline Oscars” – enter your magnificent moggie today!

The hunt is on to find the UK’s top cat as Cats Protection, which is based near Haywards Heath, launches its prestigious Rescue Cat Awards – and organisers are on the prowl for entrants.

Dubbed the ‘Feline Oscars’ the awards are designed to celebrate the real life stories of survival, bravery and heroism in the cat world.

With support from celebrity guests and prizes that cats would love to get their paws on, the UK’s leading feline welfare charity promises this year’s Rescue Cat Awards, which is sponsored by Purina PetCare, will be one to remember.

Owners have until 27 May to enter their puss in one of four categories:
  • Hero Cat – Cats that save the day!
  • Ultimate Survivor – Tales of feline survival against the odds
  • Best Friends – Where a best feline friend has radically improved the quality of human life.
  • Most Incredible Story – Belief-defying, true stories from the cat world
A special Lifetime Achievement award will also be presented by sponsor Purina PetCare to an older cat chosen from all entries who has shown remarkable support or friendship to its owner over the years.

The awards – held every two years - are open to any living cat rescued as a stray by its current owner or adopted from an animal welfare organisation. Winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony the New London Theatre in August.

Peter Hepburn, Cats Protection’s Chief Executive, said: “These awards highlight how rescue cats make wonderful pets and enhance many people’s quality of life. Cats Protection has around 7,000 fabulous cats in its care at any one time and can help you find your perfect companion and friend.”

2008’s Rescue Cat Awards saw two finalists from Sussex make their way to the ceremony, which took place in The Pharaohs Palace Hospitality Suite as part of the Tutankhamun Exhibition in London’s O2 Arena.

Eight-year-old rescue cat Casper from Seaford was shortlisted for the Ultimate Survivor award in 2008 after enduring a horrible experience when his owners suffered a dreadful house fire in which their other five cats perished. Casper himself passed out due to the smoke and fumes and it took a fireman 20 minutes to resuscitate him. After this Casper was seriously ill but, much to the delight of his owners and the vet that looked after him, he pulled through. Over the ensuing months Casper experienced a lot of upheaval as he moved with his owners in and out of different temporary accommodation but the experience seemed to make him a more confident cat. Now happily settled down again, his family have adopted new cats and Casper is a loving and caring friend to them all!

Star of stage and screen Brian Blessed, who was one of the judges of the 2008 Rescue Cat Awards, said: “As a proud owner of rescue cats down the years, I know what adorable creatures they are and how they constantly amaze their owners.

“I hope that Cats Protection’s Rescue Cat Awards 2010 will attract many entries to remind us of the love, companionship and sheer wonder that rescue cats bring to our lives.”

For more information and an entry form, please visit www.cats.org.uk or email rescuecatawards@cats.org.uk. Alternatively please call 03000 12 12 12.

Henfield Asperger's Syndrome Help Group

Henfield Asperger’s Syndrome Help-group is a recently formed group for families dealing with children who have a diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome or Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a condition that currently effects up to 20 children in our village. Asperger’s syndrome was first identified by Hans Asperger, a Viennese paediatrician, over fifty years ago. He identified a consistent pattern of abilities and behaviour that predominantly occurs in boys. This pattern includes a lack of empathy, little ability to form friendships, one-sided conversations, intense absorption in a special interest and clumsy movements.

HASH meets monthly and we talk through positive ways to help make our children’s lives easier, and the world around them less confusing. We are there not only to help with practical problems such as obtaining statutory benefits and educational statements, but as a shoulder to cry on when needed at any time, and a well balanced sense of humour when not.

People with Asperger’s syndrome perceive the world differently from everyone else, and it is most important for those involved with their care and education to develop tolerance, acceptance, and have a willingness to learn. These children can find everyday situations strange and baffling, and often misinterpret language and non verbal social signals. This often leads them into conflict with conventional ways of thinking, feeling and behaving, causing a child to be stigmatised and labelled “emotionally disturbed”, “rude”, “naughty” “depressive”, “weird”, “nerd” etc.

I found the following example from Andrew Matthew’s book Making Friends (1990, p.129) useful because it made me aware of how we interpret language, and how much the meaning can changes when the emphasis is put on a different word. For a child with ASD the true meaning would be incomprehensible despite their ability to understand the individual words in this sentence.

I didn’t say she stole my money. (but someone said it)
I didn’t say she stole my money. (I definitely didn’t say it)
I didn’t say she stole my money. (but I implied it)
I didn’t say she stole my money. (but someone stole it)
I didn’t say she stole my money. (but she did something with it)
I didn’t say she stole my money. (she stole someone else’s)
I didn’t say she stole my money. (she took something else)

Many children with ASD, including my son, have an above average IQ, and although it is not possible to change or ‘cure’ the ASD, it is possible for the child to be taught concepts and ways of adapting to the world that the rest of us take for granted. Through a desire to ‘fit in’ many older children can disguise their disability very effectively, and learn to use their special skills constructively. However all children on the autistic spectrum are different, and it is not possible to find one method perfect for every child, it is therefore vital to try new things and ‘think outside the box’. Working as a group we can share our experiences as different problems present themselves at different stages of our child’s development. Having parents of older children and young adults making contact has been very encouraging , as it has proved that these children, with the right help, can grow up to gain high qualifications, good jobs and form positive social relationships.
