Codex Alimentarius: Downing St Petition Needs Your Signature
I know some of you will be familiar with this, for others you may not be aware of what parliament is about to do in your name. Codex Alimentairus is a law designed to hand over the control of natural remedies to the pharmaceutical giants. One more attempt to regulate us - with potentially dire consequences. Unless we take this last opportunity and act now we will not be able to buy vitamins or health/nutritional supplements without a doctor's prescription - they will be banned from 31st December 2009.
You may think this can't happen, you may think why haven't I heard about this before. The reason is that there are vested interests, giant multinational pharmaceutical companies, and its not in their interest that you know about and oppose this. They and our lawmakers in Europe are banking on public apathy. Despite considerable pressure already exerted our government is still planning to implement this law - UNLESS THERE IS MASSIVE OPPOSITION IT WILL GO AHEAD.
Like many health and safety matters this was started with good intentions, in 1962 by the United Nations, to establish international free trade foods but has become a major threat to our civil liberties and freedom of choice.
As the song says: YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'VE GOT TILL ITS GONE
Please, sign the petition to the Prime Minister . . It takes 10 seconds! This is for our health, and well-being and the health and well-being of our children. Please click on this link below ...
http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Vitamins/
for more information google opposition to codex alimentarius or look on facebook and you'll see that the threat is very real and opposition is from people from all walks of life, in many countries

A Knight to Remember
The knight is advertising a Medieval Fair in Danny Park on Sunday September 20th, one of the highlights of the 2009 Hurst Festival.
South Downs and Tates Garages are major sponsors of the festival this year and have taken the opportunity to advertise this with the display.
The Danny event will not only feature jousting, but an epic performance by members of the Medieval Siege Society, in fact an army of Medieval soldiers will march through Hurstpierpoint High Street, en route to Danny, on Saturday September 19th.
Along with the jousting, which features Ditchling Common Stud, and the battle, will be displays of falconry, a hog roast, beer tent and Harris Brothers’ Funfair.
Tickets for the spectacular are bookable through the Festival website www.hurstfestival.org.uk or from The Mint House Bookshop in Hurstpierpoint High Street.

Henfield has a new business group
The group, BizBN5, has attracted more than 20 members at its first two meetings at the White Hart in Henfield High Street.
Founder Jo Donne, of Tempting Savings, said: "Many people who work on their own or run small businesses can benefit from meeting others and exchanging views and work opportunities.
"The response has been great and I am delighted that we have the foundation for a networking group that will be useful for so many people running their own businesses in and around Henfield."
Guest speakers at the last meeting were graphic designer Helen Boosey (helenboosey.co.uk) whose work includes brochure, newsletter and magazine design, and Gillian Goodsman, who runs the Henfield lettings agency Goodsman Letting with properties across the area.
The next meeting is at the White Hart at 6pm on Monday September 14. Anyone welcome. Entry free. More details from Jo Donne on 07743 696649.

Ride the Wave and Get the Vibe Artwave 2009 is Here!
Running from Saturday 29th August until Sunday 13th September, Artwave 2009 showcases creative works by local artists in their homes and studios. Sometimes snuggled away in beautiful parts of the countryside, Artwave open houses offer visitors the chance to escape their often frantic schedules and to discover stimulating and inspirational art in serene and extra ordinary locations, right on their doorstep.
This year, the Artwave open houses cover the breadth of Lewes District, including venues in Ditchling, Firle and Chailey, as well as the larger towns of Seaford, Newhaven and Lewes.
If you’d like to get involved it’s not too late. A competition is running called 'The Gods in the Landscape', in conjunction with the Sussex Bards, Druids & Ovates. Anyone can create a piece of visual art, based on the title theme, and an exhibition will be opened at the Crypt Gallery, Seaford from 18th until 24th September. There are two age categories, 8-15yrs & 16+yrs. A winner will be chosen from the submissions and the artist awarded with £100.
There is also an opportunity to win a family ticket for a local visitor attraction by voting for your favourite open house of 2009. Voting forms are available at the venues and in Lewes and Seaford tourist information centres.
The Artwave brochures are out now. Simply pop into Lewes or Seaford tourist information centre to pick up a copy, or email artwave@lewes.gov.uk, or visit our website www.artwavefestival.org <http://www.artwavefestival.org/> for online listings.

The Your Heritage Lottery has supported the ‘Lewes Phoenix ‘Project since May 2008- to examine the history of the Phoenix Iron and Steel Works - once based in the North Street area of Lewes and stretching right over to where Waitrose now stands.
Ex workers and their families have been in contact and offered photo albums, artefacts and stories. Sarah Hitching an oral historian has recorded dozens of accounts describing people’s life experiences andLewes when it was an industrial town. The iron works was a dangerous place and some of the stories tell of explosions and accidents. Health and Safety regulations were not in force even for school leavers. Some of the workers have been leading the research and uncovering maps and plans at ESCC Records Office and interpreting them through their detailed knowledge.
In the early 1850s Edward Reeves watchmaker and jeweller became interested in the new art of photography. In 1858 he moved to 159 High Street, Lewes and built a daylight studio. The studio has been in continuous use by four generations of the Reeves family up to the present day. As a result they have a unique and ever-growing collection of images spanning nearly 150 years. Tom Reeves, is Edward’s great grandson and is following the family tradition by continuing to run the business and photograph local people and events.
The ‘Lewes Phoenix project have been privileged to work in partnership with Reeves. Tom and his wife Tanya have spent evenings going through boxes of glass plate negatives searching for photographs connected to the Phoenix Ironworks. The images they have discovered show the ironwork for Brighton and Hove seafront as it looked when it was first installed, there are photographs of the smoking remains of the site after a serious fire in 1948 and detailed interior shots as well as documentation of many items made by the company. These photographs will form the core of the exhibition, ‘From the Ashes’ which will be staged in ‘The Foundry Gallery’, a wonderful space that was once part of the ironworks. Many of the photographs will be seen for the first time since they were originally taken.
It will also be possible to listen to some of the recorded interviews and see other responses to the history. The exhibition will be linked to workshops for schools. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to learn more about a part of Lewes that once helped to shape the world.

Musicians Wanted for Hurstpierpoint High Street Festivities
Musicians of any type are welcome and various sites have been scouted and shopkeepers talked to.
The Festival really wants to bring events to the heart of the village.
At the same time there will be poetry readings of work by Rattlebag poets who have penned various odes to high street traders. The work will be read either inside or outside the relevant shop and the poems will be on display in windows for the whole period of the Festival.
The previous Saturday night sees the Festival First Night Party with two leading bands, The Big Kahuna – local ten piece big band and Thepagodas, featuring former members of Hurst bands.
On Saturday 19th in the evening The Gentlemen’s Club, a local Brighton band boasting a mix of rap, rock, funk, jazz and soul will play Hurstpierpoint Social Club supported by the winners of a local youth band contest.
The final weekend will see the Festival end in style with The Counterfeit Blues Brothers at the Village Centre. This Irish band has played to applause across the country and promises to make the Festival go out with a bang.
The fifth Hurst Festival runs from September 12th to 27th and programmes are now available around the village and in the area. The festival website is also open for bookings at:
www.hurstfestival.org <http://www.hurstfestival.org/>
and detailed festival information can also be found on it.
Tickets can also be purchased from The Mint House Bookshop in Hurstpierpoint High Street

Be strong and of good courage...
Be strong and of good courage; be not frightened, neither be dismayed....
--Joshua 1:9
It has been said when we are at the end of our rope, we can do one of three things: let go, tie a knot and hang on, or splice the rope and begin again. Whenever we feel there's nowhere to go but down and nobody to turn to, that's when we can start all over again. If we can learn to look beyond the end of something, we'll always see an exciting, fresh beginning.
At the end of every storm is calm. At the end of every argument is silence. At the end of one relationship there is another. Although life is composed of many endings, there are just as many new beginnings. "Life goes on" is even assured by the passage of time - at the end of each minute there's another.
Nights may have many endings, but they will also have just as many beginnings. Just as the sun will set, so the moon will rise and the stars will appear. Just as the day's activities will end, so the evening's activities will begin. And when those activities are over, there will be new experiences the next day.
I can be unafraid of endings because I know they are only the first half of beginnings.

Cuckfield Dental Practice
We want to break the circle of doubt,” says Alison Lake, Practice Manager. Once I see the fabulous children’s club, I understand what she means. It’s an oasis of calm with soft padded seating, vibrant paintings, soft toys and a fabulous mural – an incentive and comfort for any child visiting the dentist. Senior Dental Nurse Laura Wilson who is qualified in Oral Health Education introduces children from as younga as 6 months to how positive an experience visiting the dentist can be. It’s certainly not all about “open wide”, instead they take a holistic approach to dental care. Each child learns to fully understand the benefits of a good diet and how this benefits not just their body but their teeth as well. Each developmental stage challenges the child to fully understand how their teeth develop and the best preventative measures to act upon. As Alison points out: “Education is the key! If we can get this right, the rest will follow.”
The practice boasts five Associates who have extended training in different aspects of dentistry including periodontology, endodontics, cosmetic dentistry and – most importantly – preventative dentistry. This broad skill base means that patients can be inter-referred within the practice providing continuity and convenience.
From August the practice is pleased to announce the arrival of a new dentist to the
team and, as a result, will be accepting new NHS and private patients. The opening hours
have also been extended to offer appointments until 8pm on a Thursday. There are 4 surgeries every Saturday morning.
Cuckfield Dental Practice is not just about outstanding dentistry, though Simon and his team want their patients to enjoy coming to the practice and be secure in the knowledge that, at any age, they are entrusting their smile to a team committed to delivering exceptional dentistry backed by superb service in a welcoming and relaxing environment.

Hurstpierpoint Festival 2009
This is the fifth year of the Festival, which runs from 12th to 27th September, and organisers have mixed tried and tested attractions, such as a sing-a-long Messiah at the Holy Trinity Church, a Family Fun Day with giant blow-up human table football on St Lawrence School field to a concert at Little Washbrook Farm barn by Sussex folk legends The Copper Family.
The Medieval Fair is on Sunday, 20th September and promises to be the highlight of the Festival with a range of medieval crafts on display together with food and drink.
Darwin200, the celebration of the bicentenary, will be marked by the premiere of Collapsing Creation by New Zealand playwright Michael Burton at the Players’ Theatre, also a special evening of events to mark the fact that Darwin’s close friend and scientific colleague, Alfred Russell Wallace, wrote his parallel work The Malay Archipelago in Hurstpierpoint, starting at his home in the village, Treeps House.
The opening and closing weekends will see party evenings in the Village Centre with local bands The Big Kahuna, The Pagodas and the Counterfeit Blues Brothers soul band.
Local artists Desperate Hurstwives will perform for three nights at the Players’ Theatre with guest compere, local actress Gwyneth Powell.
Labour MP and Have I Got News For You regular Bob Marshall-Andrews is guest speaker at a dinner at Pyecombe Golf Club and local comedian and TV stand-up Stephen Grant will compere a full line-up of comedians Zoe Lyons, Seann Walsh and Pierre Holmes at Hurstpierpoint Social Club on Wednesday, 16th September.
For the first time there will be a children’s writing workshop with prizewinning Brighton writer Nicky Singer, and Joseph O’Neill’s novel Netherland has been chosen for The Village Reads discussion evening at the New Inn.
Tickets are bookable through the website www.hurstfestival.org.uk or from The Mint House Bookshop in the High Street.
The Hurst Festival could not happen without the help of the Parish Council and Hurstpierpoint Community Charity, not to mention the many many volunteers who help make the Festival such a success. Many thanks to all of them.
The committee is always looking for willing helpers. Running a festival is great fun but needs a lot of hands, so if you would like to be involved, please log on to our website and sign up.

COME ALONG TO SPOT CELEBRITIES AT THE CHESNUT TREE HOUSE 10K COASTAL RUN!
We are delighted that professional footballer, Paul Jones, and his wife, Annette, have decided to take part in our 10k Coastal Run. They have supported Chestnut Tree House for two years and to date their fundraising efforts have totalled over £20,000 and greatly helped to raise the awareness of the hospice and our work. During his career, Paul has played over 300 games for Southampton - including the FA cup final in 2003, has earned 50 caps for his country, Wales, between 1996 until 2006 and is currently the goalkeeping coach for Wales.
Children's TV presenter, Jez Edwards, has also signed up to the run and is training hard to give his friend, Paul Jones, a run for his money! Jez has kindly agreed to open our Family Fun Day at Chestnut Tree House on 26th September at 10am with fellow Children’s TV presenter, Michael Abaslom. We are flinging open our doors and inviting all our supporters to come and have a look round our hospice as part of the National Children’s Hospice Week celebration.
We were hoping that Olympic silver medalist, Iwan Thomas MBE, would be able to join us on the day but unfortunately he is unable to make it. However, he sent us this message of support. Said Iwan, “I am amazed and humbled by the fantastic care that Chestnut Tree House provides for local life-limited children and their families. It's a great cause and it's local so you can see for yourself that any money you raise will go directly towards helping children and young people in your community. I wish everyone taking part the best of luck and encourage anyone who isn’t yet taking part to get involved today. Call or go online and sign yourself for the Chestnut Tree House 10k Coastal Run!”
Places are going fast but it’s not too late to enter. Entry costs £11 per person or £9 for affiliated running club members. You can register online at www.chestnut-tree-house.org.uk or by calling the Events Team on 01903 871817.
A big thank you to Thesis Asset Management who have very kindly sponsored our 2009 Chestnut Tree House 10k Coastal Run.
So, what are you waiting for? Get your running shoes on and start training for the Chestnut Tree House 10k Run!

Final call for comments about parking in Haywards Heath
At a recent meeting of the Central Mid Sussex County Local Committee (CLC), County Councillors decided that based on comments received during a public consultation held in May this year, some proposals for a small number of roads needed to be re-designed and re-advertised.
Derek Whittington, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Transport, said: "I would like to thank the people who have already told us what they think of the proposals. We have amended the original plans. It's vital we hear from residents, commuters and any one else who uses these road regularly."
The consultation will take place from Thursday August 13 until Thursday September 3. Plans of the proposals will be available to see at Haywards Heath Town Council, Haywards Heath Library and Lindfield Parish Council Offices, during normal opening hours.
Plans will also be available to view in the roads and transport section of the West Sussex County Council website, where there will also be a response form for anyone who wishes to comment.
Any remarks about the revised proposals may also be sent in writing to: The Traffic Regulation Order Team, West Sussex County Council, The Grange, Tower Street, Chichester, PO19 1RH; or by e-mail to: tro.team@westsussex.gov.uk

WORLD DRESSAGE RECORD SET AT HICKSTEAD
There is something about the Dressage at Hickstead crowd that makes them know when to expect the unexpected. As the rain showers cleared at the end of the final day of the week long CDI 5 star show in July you could have heard a pin drop as the Dutchman Edward Gal and his nine year old horse Mooorlands Totilas entered the arena for the final round of the Championship. So much was expected of the much talked-about pairing, fresh from championship winning performances in their native Holland.
Kur, or freestyle to music, requires competitors to match a predetermined number of movements to their own choice of music. It is the final test after a qualifying round that incorporates movements at the top level of difficulty for horse and rider combinations, as seen at the Beijing Olympic Games, and is marked as a percentage – the higher the percentage, the closer the performance has been to perfection.
Up until Gal’s entrance on 26 July the Kur Freestyle record score had been 87.93%, set by World Champions Anky van Grunsven in Rome in 2006. But she was not at Hickstead, having had to withdraw her ride because of fitness problems with her mount. Could Gal do anything about her long reign? He had won the qualifying Grand Prix round with 79.95% ahead of team colleague Adelinde Cornelissen on Parzival (76.55%) with Britain’s Laura Bechtolsheimer lying third on Mistral Horjris.
He could and did, with a performance that, even though it contained a mistake, set the judges reaching for their 9 and 10 buttons, for a massive 89.4%. Van Grunsven’s record was well and truly beaten. Laura Bechtolsheimer could think herself unfortunate to have been outshone by Gal, simply because she was there on the same day. She held on to her third place behind Cornelissen making 81% in the Kur, a score that on any other day would be making headlines in its own right. Gal took his second standing ovation of the day as the world record score was announced, and then took his third at the prize giving, for which there were few spare seats.
This was Dressage at Hickstead’s 16th year, this time running its first CDI 5 Star event under the Exquis World Dressage Masters’ flag. The show proved to be the best since the enormously successful European Championships held there in 2003. This year the quality of the horses and the overall standard of the combinations raised competition to new heights. Competitors from 17 nations made the trip to compete in the Dressage classes, including several from Canada and the USA. The Dutch had chosen Hickstead as their final selection trial before the Europen Championships to be held at Windsor next month. Spectators at the show had a feast before them: viewers around the world were able to watch the live footage on the Dressage at Hickstead website.
Sponsors Exquis, Moorlands and Nunberger set themselves a target of promoting an innovative approach to the sport of Dressage, with big prize money aimed at attracting the top competitors on a limited world circuit. Dresage at Hickstead put on a show to rival those held at Palm Beach, Munich and Cannes, proving that there, in West Sussex, they are right up there with the top venues.

GOLFERS CELEBRATE 30 YEARS AND HELP LOCAL HOSPICE
Said Ian, “We are so grateful to the members of the Steyning and Henfield Rotary Club. They have supported the hospice for many years and generously donated many thousands of pounds to the charity. We care for patients and families in Steyning and Henfield and have very loyal Friends Groups and supporters in both villages. The continued support of the Rotary Club means a great deal to everyone at St Barnabas and we would like to congratulate them on their 30th anniversary.”
At the celebratory dinner to mark their 30 years, Club President Michael Trist said, “It is a great privilege to be the Club’s President in this Anniversary Year. I am grateful for all the support and guidance I receive, particularly from those who are founder members. It is also an opportunity to say a big Thank You to all the people of Steyning and Henfield who have enabled the Club to donate around £300,000 to local, national and international charities over the last 30 years. We have long been regular supporters of hospices, in particular St Barnabas.”
Looking ahead, Michael said that he had a busy year planned not only with fundraising events and working with others in the community but making sure there was time for everyone to enjoy a range of social events. The evening was an opportunity for everyone to relax and celebrate the last 30 years. He would love to hear from anyone interested in joining the Club and making a real difference to their local community.

Cabaret Comes to Hurstpierpoint as part of Hurst Festival 2009
A unique cabaret performer will bring her selection of popular and comedy songs from the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s to Hurstpierpoint Festival in September.
Sharon Elizabeth enjoyed a successful season at the Brighton Festival Fringe earlier this year and is now bringing her theatrical singing show to Holy Trinity Church on Monday 14th September. Sharon's performance will be accompanied by her composer colleague Paul Lewis. Her performance is sponsored by West Sussex County Council.
More cabaret will be provided by Desperate Hurstwives who will present their unique show at the Players Theatre on September 22nd, 23rd and 24th, introduced by local actress Gwyneth Powell.
On Sunday 13th, at Danny House, the prestigious Brighton Consort, together with the Pastores Ensemble, will perform works by Orlando di Lasso and Henry Purcell in a programme covering music from Renaissance Europe to Restoration England.
Other classical music events include the popular Messiah from Scratch, with conductor Stephen Hope and soloists, which will be rehearsing in Holy Trinity on Saturday September 19th and will be performed on Sunday September 20th and Heber Opera performing a concert of popular arias and choruses in the Chapel at Hurstpierpoint College on Tuesday September 22nd.
The fifth Hurst Festival runs from September 12th to 27th and programmes are now available around the village and in the area. Man with a Mission
About the Author
John Taylor embarked on a career in civil engineering, but soon felt that God was calling him to become a minister. He became a lay assistant with the Missions to Seamen, firstly in Cardiff, then London, where he met his wife, Rose. Their first overseas posting was in Hong Kong in the 1950s, followed by a period back in the UK while John studied for ordination. He served as curate in two Welsh parishes before returning to the Missions to Seamen, as chaplain in Dar es Salaam. While there he became Archdeacon and Vicar General, and on leaving was made a Canon Emeritus. His final overseas posting was in Bangkok, where he worked with prisoners, refugees and war veterans, as well as the expatriate community. He was awarded the OBE for his work in Tanzania. Canon John is now retired and still living in the former rectory of the Sussex parish of Streat and Westmeston, where he was priest in charge.

St Andrew’s Church, Edburton - Flower festival
St Andrew’s Church, Edburton, will be filled with flowers for a three-day flower festival from Friday 11th September to Sunday 13th September. Over 40 spectacular displays will show off the historic church and the results of the major restoration programme for which the small local community raised an impressive total of over £260,000.
Local flower arrangers from the Henfield Flower Club are staging the event, putting together the displays with the theme of ‘Country Ways’. Individual displays will cover ‘Arable farming’ to ‘The Blacksmith’ and ‘Windmills’ to ‘Village Cricket’.
All the flowers have been generously donated by the parishioners and Friends of
St Andrew’s in memory of their loved ones.
The festival’s driving force and designer, Jean Sinclair-Young, Vice President of the Henfield Flower Club, who proposed the theme, highlighted its relevance; “St Andrew’s Church has always been at the heart of a rural community, so celebrating activities that have helped shape the community over the past millennium and more, seemed most appropriate.”
Flowers and 1,000 years of history
The flower displays alone will make the festival an event not to be missed. The large internal space, complemented by excellent natural lighting makes the Church an ideal setting. The previous flower festival, held seven years ago as part of the fund raising campaign, drew visitors from all over Sussex and beyond.
Anyone with even a passing interest in heritage, architecture, or just natural beauty, will have an equally compelling reason to make the visit. The Church is an architectural gem and of considerable historic importance, having been founded by Eadburgh, grand daughter of Alfred the Great in the first half of the tenth century. The early 14th Century South Porch opens into a late 13th Century Nave with a mid 14th Century tower at the far end. Notable are the Saxon mass-clocks and the Norman font.
Community achievement
The restoration is a major achievement for the small local community of around 150 households served by the Church. Fundraising began over seven years ago and the work has been completed in stages as the necessary funds have been raised. The determination of the community has ensured that this important church has been preserved for its parishioners and visitors for another millennium. Although the programme of work initially planned has now been completed, further restoration work has recently been decided and maintenance work will always be necessary so fund raising activities will continue.
St Andrew’s is on the Edburton Road, midway between Upper Beeding and Poynings and will be well signed. Car parking will be provided in a field 20 yards west of West Springs Smoked Salmon shop. Admission is by programme costing just £3, with children free.
The festival is open from 10am to 5pm on all three days. There is good wheelchair access and refreshments will be available.
There could hardly be a better opportunity to see the historic St Andrew’s Church than in its floral glory celebrating its restoration that will preserve over 1,000 years of history for future generations.
Richard Rawlings (left), Chairman of the St Andrew’s Fundraising Committee and Peter Hudson (right) of the local committee for Viridor, in front of St Andrew’s Church Edburton, which can trace its origin back to the 10th Century. Viridor through the Landfill Tax scheme has generously contributed some £32,000 towards the restoration. Richard Rawlings highlights the huge achievement of the fundraising campaign: “Over the last seven years, we’ve needed over £260,000 to preserve our Church. It’s been a spectacular achievement for a small community of just 150 households to raise this amount. We’re especially grateful to Viridor for its generous contribution. We are also very grateful for the support of the Wolfson Foundation, Garfield Weston Foundation, several other charities and trusts as well as numerous individual donors.”
The St Andrew’s Church flower festival will feature over 40 individual displays with the theme of ‘Country Ways’ covering ‘Arable farming’ to ‘The Blacksmith’ and ‘Windmills’ to ‘Village Cricket’. Typical of the type of display to be used are ‘Heavy Horse (left) and Autumn Bounty (right).

Firefighters Barbecue on the Beach in East Grinstead
From 7.30pm until late the firefighters want members of the public to join them for what promises to be an entertaining evening based around a "beach party" theme. Entertainment will include a bar, a barbecue, a DJ and a raffle and there will be a chance to look around the fire station. The wearing of beachwear is strictly optional.
Entrance to the event costs £10 and all money raised will go towards supporting the Fire Fighters Charity. Every 30 seconds in the UK firefighters are called to an incident and thousands are injured in the process. The charity supports injured firefighters and their families in
their time of need.
East Grinstead firefighter and organiser of the event, Chris Bowles, said: "We want to try and bring this miserable summer to life by inviting people to the station for a fun filled night.
It will give us a chance to meet members of our local community while raising money for the Fire Fighters Charity."
Tickets are available in advance or on the night from East Grinstead Fire Station. The fire station is located at London Road, East Grinstead, RH19 1HA.

Fulking Fair Success!

THE Fulking Fair on 2nd August – the first one to be held in the village for at least eight years – surprised everyone on the organising committee, and indeed almost everyone else, with its unprecedented numbers of people pouring in through the gate. The top field car park – both fields were kindly loaned by Harry and Charmayne Diamond – was within whisker of being chock full, and unconfirmed estimates at the gate put the attendance at 800 people or thereabouts. We have the weather to thank at least in part, given that on the day before it had rained non stop from midday to midnight.
Too many attractions to mention them all, but a special word for the band, the Fulking Flyers, who made it all go with a swing (contact Aidan on 857735), the Dog Show, very professionally presented by Charmayne herself with the able help of her daughter, to the caterers – Jenny and Geoff at the Shepherd & Dog pub for drinks, and the assorted villagers including Tim, Jill, Janet, Myriam, Ros and Sarah – for all their hard work. A big success – and watch out next year!

60s MUSIC IN AID OF LOCAL CHARITY
We should also mention the American artistes that loomed large in those days – the Supremes and the Beach Boys, to name but a few. Not to mention Donovan, Peter & Gordon, and all the rest of our home-grown musicians.
Our excellent DJ Andy Young will be playing all the great bands of that memorable decade and it’ll be an evening to revel in dancing or just listening to all the songs we so loved in those heady days. Somebody said “If you can remember the sixties, you weren’t there.” Well, many of us were there and do remember the fantastic music and the fun we had dancing at parties and discos!
So, if you’d enjoy doing the ‘Hippy Hippy Shake’ and maybe the ‘Locomotion’ you are cordially invited to a Charity Disco in Ditchling Village Hall, on Saturday October 24. It’s going to be ‘Fun Fun Fun’ and we’ll turn ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’ if you don’t come along and enjoy the evening with us.
Profits will go to the Sussex Wildlife Trust, the Henfield based conservation charity that cares for our local nature reserves and fights to protect our dwindling countryside.
Tickets cost just £10 and include light refreshments. They’re available from Parkers (in Ditchling High Street) and Ditchling Post Office, also from Sylvia Bain on 01273 845361.
You’re invited to bring your own bottle; however, a bar will be available and there’ll be a Grand Raffle including some special 60s-themed prizes during the evening.
So ‘C’mon Everybody’ to Ditchling Village Hall on Saturday October 24 at 7.30pm and be ‘Wild Things’ in support of the Sussex Wildlife Trust. Please note that NO tickets will be available at the door – you need to get your ticket in advance, else you won’t get no ‘Satisfaction’.
