Wivelsfield: Church on the Move!

As part of the Village Day Weekend the Church is holding a special Sunday morning service on 19th July in the marquee on the Village Green, entitled “BETTER TOGETHER” which will be a Service of Celebration for the whole village community. Welcome and drinks will be available from 10:30am with the service at 11:15am.

The service will be followed by a community picnic linked to the nationwide “ THE BIG LUNCH”. Bring your own picnic to the green and enjoy what we hope will be a real party atmosphere. Puddings will be provided by the Church, free of charge.

The Big Lunch was dreamed up by Tim Smit and friends one morning at the Eden Project in Cornwall so for more information go to http://www.thebiglunch.com/ and type in RH17 7QG.

Wivelsfield: Pantomime Donkeys in training

In a Field of His Own

There are definitely no cowboy builders in Wivelsfield: Alun Gedrych would describe himself as preferring donkeys! When organisers of Wivelsfield Village Day approached Alun, who owns Alun Gedrych Ltd a ground work company, and asked him if his business would like to be involved with the day, he leapt at the chance to sponsor the soon-to-be-famous pantomime donkey derby race.

Wivelsfield is already famous for its Donkey Derby races of the 1960s that once drew record crowds: the proceeds of which founded what is now St Peter & St James Hospice.

Alun said: “Talk of the new venture of the village day has spread like wildfire so when the dynamic organising trio, of Nicky Collins, Barbara Harty and Sue Morris, approached me I knew I had to be fast off the starting blocks to sponsor the donkey derby; as I hope my children will be in their pantomime donkey costume on the day.”

The pantomime donkey derby will be one of the main arena attractions on the day. Nicky Collins, one of the organisers, said: “We would like people to make their own pantomime donkey costumes for the race. Not only will there be a trophy & prize for the winning donkey but there will also be a trophy & prize for the best dressed donkey.”

More information about Wivelsfield Village Day, which will be held on Saturday 18th July on the village green from 10am – 5pm, can be found on http://www.wivelsfield.net/ .

Wivelsfield: Full of Village Spirit

Organisers of this year’s Wivelsfield Village Day have been heartened by the support they have received from local businesses. The new owners, Jo Kilby & Dave Hunter, from Wivelsfield Green pub, the Cock Inn, were doubly keen to be involved; not only supplying the marquee and equipment for the beer tent but also contributing a marquee for the food fair through ABC Marquees.

Dave said: “It’s vital that villages retain their community spirit and days like the Village Day allow everyone to get together to do this. Having places that families can meet is exactly the reason why we are building a new, enclosed beer garden and play area at the back of The Cock Inn”.

Wivelsfield is famous for its Donkey Derbys and there will be pantomime and space-hopper Donkey Races in the main arena, along with tug-of-war, children’s races, a Mid-Sussex Blues football match and display by Burgess Hill Marching Band.

Over 50 stalls will offer everything from wellie throwing to strawberries and cream. Attractions include Harris’s traditional funfair, a climbing wall, a miniature steam railway, rides on a fire engine and, in the afternoon, a fun dog show. The Village Day is on Saturday 18th July from 10am - 5pm and will run on the village green.

For more information please visit http://www.wivelsfield.net/ or phone Barbara Harty on 01444 470024.

Wivelsfield: Youth Group Climbing High

A climbing wall, football, stoolball, skittles, basketball, touch rugby and cricket are just some of the outdoor summer activities planned for young people to try in Wivelsfield.

Wivelsfield was ‘buzzing’ recently with children eager to have a go at the first of these activities: scaling a 10 foot climbing wall. All the local children and their friends were invited to come along and try their hand at scaling the dizzying heights to ring the bell at the top.

Jemima, our local youth worker, said “We are lucky in Wivelsfield to have such a supportive Parish Council who help to provide activities for the children in the village. Currently, we are able to provide activities and support for 8 to 17 year olds during the summer months. If some more volunteers can be found, to assist with supervision, then activities will be offered to a younger age group during the autumn and winter.”

The same climbing wall will again be in Wivelsfield as part of the Village Day celebrations on Saturday 18th July. It will be FREE to climb for anyone over the age of 5 who is up for the challenge, as it has been kindly paid for by local businesses, including St George’s Park Retirement Village, Aerialbeam and Masters & Son Funeral Directors.

Throughout the summer events are planned fortnightly for Wivelsfield Youth Group starting on Tuesday 23rd June with football. All events are on Wivelsfield Recreation Ground from 7pm to 9pm. All welcome: ages 8 to 17. For more information visit http://www.wivelsfield.net/ or phone Jemima Dailly on 07734 557918.
